James Lewis, New Mexico, Player News

  04/08/20 - OLB James LewisrSr/2022, New Mexico, 5-11, 207 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

The buzz surrounding the University of New Mexico football program upon the hiring of coach Danny Gonzales produced excitement for several returning players, including James Lewis. A 5-foot-11, 215-pound linebacker, Lewis has found new life with a new coach. He got lost in the mix last year when the Lobos went 2-10, leading to a coaching change after Bob Davie's ouster. Lewis began to feel the energy and took to Twitter after Gonzales' hire. "I will be the best Linebacker in the Mountain West this year," Lewis tweeted on Feb. 6. The Lobos will need that type of swagger, especially at the linebacker position, which lost two key players, Alex Hart and Alexander "Moana" Vainikolo, to exhausted eligibility.

Hart was, well, the heart and soul of UNM's defense and led the Lobos with 82 tackles. Vainikolo was No. 2 in tackles with 76 and he led UNM with 11.5 tackles for losses. Lewis finished with four tackles, but he believes his playing time will increase this season. Before the coronavirus pandemic ended all team activities this spring, Lewis was making plays in practice and excelling in the weight room under the instruction of strength and conditioning coach Jimmy Carson. Lewis said the workouts reminded him of the training he put in at Oklahoma State, where he began his college career before going to Coffeyville Junior College in Kansas and then transferring to UNM last year. - Albuquerque Journal
