Sage Doxtater, New Mexico State, Player News

Sage Doxtater could be making money playing football in his native Canada. The redshirt senior left tackle was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in the second round of the May Canadian Football League Draft. But Doxtater, the only remaining player from New Mexico State's Arizona Bowl season in 2017, believes there was unfinished business so he put a professional career on hold for now. "I wasn't happy with how our last season ended," Doxtater said. "I think we were 2-10 and I didn't even play for most the year. I didn't want to go out on that note." Doxtater could be prepping for the upcoming CFL season, but he believes another good year at NM State could help his NFL Draft prospects. "I knew that I had the ability and I just had to put the work in," Doxtater said. "If definitely a lifelong dream for every football player to get drafted. I was ecstatic when I got the call." Doxtater has improved each season at NM State, growing from a 6-foot-6, 305-pound 17-year-old to a future professional at 344 pounds. He was on the Sun Belt Conference All Newcomer team after making nine starts as a true freshman in 2016. - Las Cruces Sun News

New Mexico State University made the difficult decision to postpone its 2020 football season due to the COVID-19 pandemic that continues to affect our nation. This decision was reached in conjunction with President John Floros, Chancellor Dan Arvizu and Head Football Coach Doug Martin. We have relied on the knowledge and expertise of both our on-campus medical staff and others to arrive at this decision. With the Big 10, Pac-12, Mid-American and Mountain West Conferences, UConn, UMass and Old Dominion a total of 53 FBS programs have made a similar decisions in recent days. Because of this, we came to the conclusion that creating a full, robust schedule for our student-athletes and fans would have been exceptionally difficult to accomplish. Finally, the state of New Mexico's 14-day quarantine order makes playing a football schedule with road games impossible. - New Mexico State Football

2020 WUERFFEL TROPHY PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Sage Doxtater, New Mexico State, senior, offensive line,...Doxtater, a three-year starter, is fully recovered after battling a nagging injury one year ago. He played in only four games with three starts after missing the first half of last season due to the injury. Regarded as the Canadian Football League's top offensive line draft prospect, Doxtater made an immediate impact in his first game action of last year. NM State generated a season-best 611 total yards of offense in the win over UIW, rushing for 295 yards and throwing for 316 yards behind his blocking. Off the field, Doxtater plays an active role in his community, using football to inspire children from his hometown. Hailing from Onieda Nation in southwestern Ontario, he frequently visits the elementary school he attended to speak with students about life outside of the reservation. - New Mexico State Football
