By the time the final seconds ticked away, most of the purple had vacated, leaving Oregon to once again dance around the field and celebrate in the stands of arguably its most-heated rival. On a windy, rainy night the seventh-ranked Ducks showed a bit mo re "prowess" - the word of the week in this rivalry - than Washington. "Proud of the way our guys came out and showed our prowess in handling inclement weather," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "We continued to play hard throughout the entire game mak ing sure every critical situation our team responded really well." Travis Dye rushed for a career-high 211 yards and a touchdown, Anthony Brown ran for a score and passed for another and Oregon overcame a sluggish start to beat Washington 26-16 on Saturd ay night.A year after the border rivals didn't play due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Huskies program, the Ducks (8-1, 5-1 Pac-12) fell behind early before running off 21 consecutive points and beat Washington for the seventh time in the past eight games played in Seattle. "The W means everything to me. The performance is just a plus," Dye said. Brown threw a 31-yard TD pass to Devon Williams late in the first half to take a 10-9 lead at the break and scored on a 2-yard run early in the third quarter. Dye capped the scoring streak when he rumbled 19 yards for a score on the first play of the fourth quarter to give the Ducks a 24-9 lead. Dye's rushing performance was the most yards rushing by an Oregon running back against Washington since Jo nathan Stewart went for 251 yards in 2007. Oregon had 215 yards rushing and averaged 6.9 yards per carry in the second half. - Oregon/AP College Football

Over the course of three weeks it's been coming together for Oregon quarterback Anthony Brown Jr. Brown threw for a career-high 307 yards and three touchdowns and No. 7 Oregon had a season-high 568 yards of offense in a 52-29 victory over Colorado on Sat urday. Travis Dye ran for two touchdowns and caught a scoring pass to help Oregon (7-1, 6-1 Pac-12) extend its winning streak at Autzen Stadium to 17 games. "Efficiency, consistency and just making the right reads all around the board," Brown said about his progress. "And it came from a lot of things, but just staying in the groove and continuing to do what I do throughout the week, continuing my my process, watching extra film and doing extra things and just continuing that." Brendon Lewis threw for 22 4 yards and three TDs for the Buffaloes (2-5, 1-4). Brenden Rice, the son of former San Francisco 49ers great Jerry Rice, had 102 yards receiving and a touchdown.Although he was met by some boos from the home crowd early against Cal on Oct. 15, Br own shook off the critics and rallied Oregon with two straight touchdowns in the fourth quarter for a 24-17 victory. The final touchdown was Brown's 11-yard keeper. Brown did it again last weekend in a 34-31 victory at UCLA with a 43-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown run that ultimately kept the game out of reach for the Bruins. He finished with 296 yards passing and 85 yards rushing. "The supporting cast continues to elevate their play, which, in turn, as Anthony continues to elevate his play, his attenti on to detail, his accuracy, his decision making - all those things cumulatively add up the better play as an offense," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. - Oregon/AP College Football

Quarterback Anthony Brown shut out the noise to lead Oregon to a fourth-quarter comeback, then let the defense seal a victory over California. Brown scored on an 11-yard keeper with 4:50 left and the ninth-ranked Ducks held off surprisingly tenacious Cal 24-17 on Friday night. The Golden Bears took a 17-10 lead early in the final quarter, but Brown answered with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jaylon Redd to tie it. The Ducks (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) pulled in front on Brown's scamper into the end zone. Cal threat ened on the ensuing possession. The Golden Bears got to the Oregon 3 after Chase Garbers' fourth-down pass to Kekoa Crawford preserved the drive, but his fourth-and-2 attempt with just 2 seconds left fell incomplete.Oregon was coming off a bye fol lowing an overtime loss at Stanford. The rebound win was the Ducks' 16th straight victory at Autzen Stadium. Travis Dye ran for 145 yards and a score as Oregon leaned on him in the absence of CJ Verdell, who was injured against Stanford and is out for th e season. Brown threw for 244 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 44 yards and another score. But he faced boos from the Autzen crowd earlier in the game as Oregon's offense sputtered. "He's a great leader, he's willing to step up in those big momen ts and he's not afraid to shy away from those moments. He shows that time and time again," said offensive lineman Ryan Walk. "We saw that tonight, when the going was getting tough there he stepped up, grabbed the offense, he said, `We're going to get thi s thing right, let's get it going." - Oregon/AP College Football

Anthony Brown Jr. was blunt about No. 11 Oregon's offensive struggles against Fresno State. "It wasn't clean enough," he said. Brown scored on a 30-yard quarterback keeper with 2:57 left and the Ducks overcame a wobbly season opener with a 31-24 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday. Oregon jumped to a 21-6 lead, but Fresno State scored two unanswered touchdowns to tie the game midway through the third quarter, then took the lead early in the fourth on Abraham Montano's field goal.Camden Lewis ki cks a 25-yard game-tying field goal before Brown's go-ahead touchdown. The performance was somewhat concerning given the Ducks face No. 4 Ohio State next weekend. "In order for us to go where we need to go, we have to be firing on all cylinders, which we weren't today. And that was obvious," Brown said. "We're going to see it on the tape, fix what we need to we need to fix and move on and progress from it." Brown threw for 172 yards and a touchdown while running for 62 yards and the winner. It was Orego n's 17th straight home-opening victory. Brown, a sixth-year senior, transferred to Oregon last year from Boston College but was backup to Tyler Shough until getting playing time in the Pac-12 title game and the Fiesta Bowl. Anthony Brown was officially announced as Oregon's starting quarterback Friday afternoon, getting the expected nod over a trio of freshmen who continue to compete for the backup role. "He's a starter because he's done a great job and the others are battl ing for that other spot because they've done a great job as well," coach Mario Cristobal said after Friday's practice in Autzen Stadium. "It's not a matter of great performance versus poor performance, they've all developed under (offensive coordinator J oe Moorhead) and the system. Proud of them and want to see them keep competing." Brown, a sixth-year senior who started 28 games in four years at Boston College before transferring to Oregon in 2020, was Tyler Shough's backup last season.Brown pla yed in the Pac-12 championship game and Fiesta Bowl last season and was a combined 15-of-23 passing for 164 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed seven times for 40 yards and two scores. His first start as a Duck will be against Fresno State at Auzten Stadium on Sept. 4. Brown came into the fall as the projected starter and spent the last three weeks securing his standing. "The way he handles himself and has control of command of the offense, his presence amongst the players, at the line of scrimmage . his ability to improvise, sometimes negotiate throws in tough situations, his ability to run the ball as well," Cristobal said when asked how Brown separated himself. "His explosive-play ratio has been high against a defense we feel is really good." - Register Guard

Oregon is the team to beat in the Pac-12. And Anthony Brown is the man to beat at quarterback. After the Ducks were picked to win the Pac-12 in the preseason media poll Tuesday, coach Mario Cristobal said Brown will enter the Ducks' fall camp atop the de pth chart. "Anthony will start with the ones. He has earned that," Cristobal said at the conference's media day event in Los Angeles. "He's done a very good job from a performance standpoint, leadership performance, taking on coach (Joe) Moorhead's offen sive scheme. "At the same time, the freshmen behind him have done an excellent job as well. It merits them getting an opportunity to compete for that position as well. We will make that happen."Tyler Shough started all seven games last season but transferred to Texas Tech after splitting snaps with Brown in the Pac-12 championship game and Fiesta Bowl. Brown was a combined 15-for-23 passing for 164 yards and two touchdowns in the victory over USC in the conference title game and the loss to Iowa State in the Fiesta Bowl. The Boston College transfer also had seven rushing attempts for 40 yards and two touchdowns. "He's a very cool, calm customer," Moorhead said during spring practice when Brown took all of the first-team snaps. "He's a guy that h as played a lot of football, he's a guy that's extremely intelligent and has a lot of ability as a thrower and a runner...I think he has really seized the opportunity and understands the urgency that's required of this position." - Register Guard

What has the last year been like for Anthony Brown? More of a nightmare than the Oregon dream he had growing up. "Considering everything, just to keep it short, it's been an experience," Brown said after the Ducks' spring practice Tuesday. "Something tha t's hard to explain, and it would take me all day to explain it, so I'll just leave it at that." Brown arrived in Eugene last April as a graduate transfer planning to compete for the starting quarterback job Justin Herbert had held for the previous four seasons. Due to the pandemic, many of Brown's new teammates had packed their bags and headed home. So the 6-foot-2, 226-pound former Boston College standout did his best to stay sharp in isolation.Without the benefit of spring practice or a normal fall camp, Brown wasn't able to overtake Tyler Shough ahead of the truncated 2020 season. After finally getting snaps on the Pac-12 championship game and Fiesta Bowl, Brown decided to return to Oregon. "Just having faith," Brown said. "Sticking it out h ere, I feel like was my best option. I felt like there was a lot more to take from this opportunity. We're still here and we're still grinding." Brown has taken all of the first-team reps with the Ducks during spring practice and is the heavy favorite to be the starter on Sept. 4 against Fresno State. - Register Guard

Brown, the sixth-year senior, has taken all of the first-team snaps and clearly has the best grasp of second-year offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead's playbook. Without the opportunity to compete last spring and with an abbreviated fall camp, Brown wasn' t able to beat out Tyler Shough at quarterback last season. After they split snaps in the Pac-12 championship and Fiesta Bowl, Shough transferred to Texas Tech and Brown became the favorite to be Oregon's starter in 2021. "I love AB," running back CJ Ver dell said when asked about Brown last week. "He's a real leader on and off the field, does a great job of rallying everybody, making sure he knows everybody, building a good bond and chemistry with all the players, especially on the offense. "Even last y ear when Tyler was the main guy, and (Brown) was backing him up, he was still doing the same things. The transition was very natural for him." Jay Butterfield appears to have the strongest arm and the best pocket presence among the three freshmen quarter backs. He threw a touchdown pass to Terrance Ferguson in the 2-minute drill to finish Saturday's scrimmage strong. - Register Guard

Oregon once spring practice for the second straight year with a quarterback competition and a returning backup who enters as the favorite. Tyler Shough was in that position a year ago and Anthony Brown hadn't even signed with UO yet. A year later, Shough put up strong numbers for three-plus games, then saw his efficiency tumble in the second half of the season and Brown overtook him during the Fiesta Bowl. Shough left for Texas Tech, Brown returned and is the only quarterback on the roster to have attem pted a college pass and Ty Thompson arrives with a ton of hype as the highest-rated high school QB signee in program history. Brown didn't have a full opportunity and time to learn the system last offseason. Spring was cut short, he arrived in the summer and the second fall scrimmage was canceled. Shough started the season off great and then things spiraled. A much more normal offseason might serve Brown as well as any player on the roster. If he takes the reins and shows he can be the every day starter , Oregon has an experienced quarterback that showed flashes of dynamic playmaking late last season. - The Oregonian

Anthony Brown threw two touchdown passes in his unusual Oregon debut, Jamal Hill made an interception with 2:47 to play, and the Ducks won their second straight Pac-12 title with a 31-24 victory over No. 13 Southern California in the championship game Fr iday night. Tyler Shough also threw two touchdown passes for the Ducks (4-2), who didn't win the North Division, yet still claimed the Pac-12's New Year's Six bowl berth with their only victory in the past month.Oregon had a 31-17 lead with less t han 10 minutes to play, but Bru McCoy caught a TD pass on fourth down for the Trojans (5-1) before they got the ball back with 4:43 left. USC reached midfield in search of a fourth-quarter comeback win for the fourth time in its six-game season, but Kedo n Slovis threw the first fourth-quarter interception of his career. Hill made an acrobatic play to hang on to the poorly thrown ball, and Oregon's offense ran all but 23 seconds off the clock. USC reached the Oregon 49, but the Ducks' pass rush prevented Slovis from getting off a Hail Mary. - AP College Football

A day after committing to the Oregon Ducks, Boston College graduate transfer quarterback Anthony Brown joined "Recruiting with Andrew Nemec" on 1080 The FAN to discuss his recruitment and decision to join the flock. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound signal-caller and three-year starter was forced to audible when it came to his visit plans due to the NCAA's recent enactment of an emergency recruiting dead period in response to growing concerns about the coronavirus. But Brown had already taken a trip to Oregon and was impressed by what he heard from Mario Cristobal and new offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead. He was also pleased that the trip didn't involve a sales pitch or a promise of playing time - just an opportunity to compete for the starting job vacated by graduating quarterback Justin Herbert. "I wasn't promised anything - and that's another thing that I really liked about the staff," Brown said. "No promises, no guarantees, no strings attached - just me coming in… and me coming in and competing with th e other quarterbacks. And being able to bring experience to the table is a huge thing for me. I really appreciated the fact that they offered me the opportunity to come in and compete, especially with nothing guaranteed." The graduate transfer said the a bsence of a promise is "better for the team honestly… and better for the quarterback room." As a junior, Brown threw for 1,250 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions in six games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. - The Oregonian

Early reports linked him to Miami, as the school was openly seeking a graduate transfer quarterback, but the Hurricanes event ually landed Houston transfer D'Eriq King.
