*Terrace Marshall Jr., LSU, Player News
|
Marshall's departure, on the surface, was indeed a surprising development, news that came less than two weeks after he gave a speech in a players-only meeting to bring the team together before its 27-24 win at Arkansas. However, it's a decision that was brewing for about a week, multiple sources told The Advocate. Texas A&M was going to be Marshall's final game, and even Friday's news that the Alabama game had been rescheduled didn't change his mind. Orgeron figured this was "strictly a business decisio n" for Marshall, who is expected to be selected in the early rounds of the NFL draft, and the millions of dollars he'll make as a professional will fulfill the long-held dream he wrote about in a Sunday social media post that said retiring his parents ha s been his "#1 mission.""I know he's going to have a great career in the NFL, and he's always going to be a great Tiger," Orgeron said. "He did a lot of things for us… He just thought this was the time to opt out. So, we're going to respect his decision and wish him the best." Orgeron said he respected that Marshall came and spoke to him in person. They had a close relationship. Orgeron recruited Marshall. He played with Marshall's great-uncle, the late Joe Delaney, at Northwestern State. When Myles Brennan was first injured, Marshall met with Orgeron in his office to talk about who the next quarterback would be. "So, it was a little different between a player and a coach with me and him," Orgeron said. "It was almost like family. So, he came and talked to me like a man. He explained his decision. I respected his decision." - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU receiving leader Terrace Marshall Jr. has decided to opt out for the rest of this season, leaving the Tigers without their leading receiver on the week they're scheduled to host No. 1 Alabama. Marshall, a junior, was one of three highly regarded coll ege players to declare for the draft Sunday with a social media post, along with Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi and Florida State defensive back Asante Samuel Jr. While Marshall's departure will make LSU (3-4) less competitive this season, coach Ed Orgeron has already begun showing signs of accelerating the rebuilding process that essentially began when 14 players from the 2019 national championship team were selected in the 202 NFL draft. LSU freshman tight end Arik Gilbert is second on the team i n receiving and freshman receiver Kayshon Bouttee is fourth. - AP College Football

Terrace Marshall wanted to speak to the team. The LSU wide receiver knows he usually doesn't say too much. Most of the time he's a silent star, a quiet pass catcher who leads the Tigers in every receiving statistical category. He also knows his silence i s a strength: Whenever he does say something, his point can get across. This was his time to speak: two weeks removed from a brutal 48-11 loss at Auburn; after two bye weeks, including an extra week off after LSU had to indefinitely postpone its game ag ainst Alabama because of another coronavirus outbreak; the Monday before LSU's first game in nearly a month, a matchup against a rejuvenated Arkansas program that began the week a 1½-point favorite."I just wanted to play a part of my leadership r ole on the team," Marshall told reporters Tuesday. Marshall earned his respect on the field. His nine touchdown catches in five games puts him within the 20-touchdown, Southeastern Conference single-season record, and it's possible he collects a few othe r school records before this abridged, 10-game regular season is over. His production - paired with a work ethic that provoked his mother to tell him "we need to chill out" when he trained nonstop during offseason quarantine - is what gained the respect of LSU coach Ed Orgeron. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU wide receiver Terrace Marshall had an uncharacteristically quiet afternoon in what turned into a 48-11 rout against Auburn. Marshall, who entered the game with 21 catches for 512 yards and 9 TDs, finished with just four receptions for 28 yards and a long of 13. The result means Marshall's school-record tying streak consecutive games with a touchdown catch ends at seven, which leaves him tied with two others for the LSU record. With two scores in last week's 52-24 blowout of South Carolina, Marshall tied the mark set by Dwayne Bowe (2005) and matched by Jarvis Landry (2012-13). Marshall entered the game against Auburn leading the Southeastern Conference with 128.0 yards receiving per game. His nine receiving touchdowns topped the league stats and wa s second in the FBS ranks. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Terrace Marshall's 235 yards were the most by an LSU receiver in nearly two decades, but it was the one yard he couldn't get that sealed the result against Missouri. LSU rode an 11-catch, three-touchdown performance by Marshall all the way into prime pos ition after his final catch left the Tigers with first-and-goal at the 1-yard line, trailing 45-41 with 44 seconds to play. But after two unsuccessful attempts to run it in, Missouri swatted down a quick throw targeting Marshall to the left. Marshall was again the target on fourth down, but the junior receiver was unable to haul in the contested throw as quarterback Myles Brennan rolled to his right. Marshall was running an out route on that final play, and the defender was in outside technique. "I was confident my team was gonna punch it in," Marshall said after the game. "But unfortunately we weren't able to get the job done today." But more often than not, Marshall was the one forcing the mistakes, with his three touchdown catches all coming in big spots. All three of those statistical marks (11 catches, 235 yards and three touchdowns) put Marshall in elite company in LSU history. The receiving yardage is the fourth-highest total in program history, besting all four of the 200-yard performances put up by teammates Ja'Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson in the 2019 season. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU is playing its 2020 season without a trio that rewrote its record books in their final college season, but the most notable holdovers look poised to challenge them. Through two games, Terrace Marshall has 10 catches for 189 yards from the arm of new starter Myles Brennan -- but more notable are the four touchdown passes he's logged in those opportunities. Marshall only caught two of his four targets in LSU's blowout of Vanderbilt, but both went for touchdowns. The first a strong grab inside two defe nders for 16 yards early in the second quarter, then a 51-yard catch-and-run score 4 minutes before halftime. That long pass came shortly after Vanderbilt's lone score of the night. "That's a guy that him and I have been - along with the rest of the rece ivers - have been working really hard this offseason," Brennan said after the game. "And it's nice to go out there and trust those guys to make the plays as they are doing."Despite a 1-1 start, LSU's passing attack has been rolling up yardage and touchdowns - with teammate Jontre Kirklin adding two touchdowns of his against Vanderbilt and Brennan tossing seven total through two weeks. But while Marshall and Brennan are one a pace that could challenge school and conference records, they'll be at a slight disadvantage due to the pandemic that has limited LSU's schedule to just a 10-game lineup, all against SEC opponents. With an appearance in the SEC and College Football Championship title game again this season, the most games this year's LSU tea m could possibly play is 13. The 2019 Tigers had 15 games to roll up their marks. - Baton Rouge Advocate
