Kenneth Gainwell made it official. His brief, brilliant Memphis football career is over. Gainwell announced Sunday night on Twitter that he declared for the 2021 NFL Draft, a decision that seemed all but certain when he opted out of the 2020 season. He leaves after an All-American freshman season in 2019 where he had 2,069 all-purpose yards and 16 total touchdowns. Gainwell was a unanimous AAC first team selection, a second-team All-American by Sporting News, AAC Rookie of the Year and named Freshman of the Year by the Football Writers Association of America. If Gainwell is drafted, it will be the eighth consecutive year the Tigers have someone selected. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Ryan Silverfield's first home game as Memphis head coach will be a challenge against an Arkansas State team on Saturday whose offense is just as potent as the Tigers. However, the Tigers now have to prepare without their most dynamic playmaker as All-American running back Kenneth Gainwell decided Sunday to opt out of the season. Silverfield did not address Gainwell specifically Monday and added that he'd only discuss players who opted out once their paperwork was signed or if they made the decision public.. He also said he stands behind any player who decided not to play this season.

"I always talk to them about the different situations but for health and safety reasons, or whatever they may choose to be opting out. I will support them and I think that's the right thing to do," Silverfield said. Gainwell's father, Curtis Sr., told The Commercial Appeal Sunday that his son decided to opt out following the death of an uncle due to COVID-19. Gainwell Sr. added the family has lost four relatives to the virus. "He decided that he didn't want take any chances with the coronavirus going on. You don't want to to get out there and get sick and bring it to us, his brother or his teammates," Gainwell Sr. said. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Redshirt sophomore Kenneth Gainwell opted out of the season on Sunday. 247Sports initially broke the report which was later confirmed with a source in the program. Gainwell rushed for 1,459 yards and 13 touchdowns while leading the Tigers to an AAC championship and the Cotton Bowl. - The Daily Memphian

Memphis football coach Ryan Silverfield sent out a tweet earlier in June that appeared to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Now he's taking it a step further. Silverfield announced Tuesday on Twitter that every Memphis helmet will have a "BLM", short for Black Lives Matter, sticker for every game. The circle will be gray with BLM in blue lettering, with the M being the Tigers logo. It's the same logo Silverfield tweeted out two weeks ago. Silverfield added a hashtag of #ALLINagainstRACIALINJUSTICE in Tuesday's tweet. The news was retweeted by several players, including senior defensive back TJ Carter, defensive tackle O'Bryan Goodson and wide receiver Calvin Austin III.

The Tigers football team, currently in the middle of voluntary workouts, helped lead a Unity Walk earlier this month from their practice field at University of Memphis' south campus to main campus to protest against racial injustice. At one point, Silverfield chanted "Black Lives Matter" along with his players. The announcement is the latest sign of the football team sending messages against injustice. It also shared a video on the football team account earlier this year where Silverfield, running backs coach Anthony Jones Jr. and players vowed to take a stand together against systemic racism. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Memphis athletic director Laird Veatch announced Wednesday that football players can return to campus June 6 as part of the first phase of all athletes, coaches and staff eventually coming back. The first phase - which Veatch called Phase Zero - involves football players, staff and limited athletic department staff. The phased approach is to "permit adoption of best practices and keep the safety of the student-athletes at the forefront." It includes "strict protocols for a limited number of staff and student-athletes, while each subsequent stage will only be enacted upon the success of the previous stage."

Football players will be the first students allowed on Memphis' campus since the university announced on March 12 that it switched to remote learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. U of M president David Rudd said earlier this month that plans are under way for all students to return to campus this fall. Summer classes will be held online. Veatch added that the first phase will consist of no workouts but a screening process that involves testing, physicals and questionnaires. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

If it was up to Memphis football coach Ryan Silverfield, he'd prefer not to play games this season at an empty Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. "Would I be in favor it? No way," Silverfield said during a virtual meeting with the Rotary Club of Memphis. "It's the fans that make the game. We're so lucky we have such an amazing fanbase here and many of you attend our games at the Liberty Bowl. I want that Liberty Bowl packed, let's fill it with 60,000 every game." However, he acknowledged that it's also out of his control. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the NCAA and government officials are weighing all possible options to determine what's safe for all parties.

Silverfield said that as he meets often with athletic director Laird Veatch and university president M. David Rudd, they too are considering the scenarios not just for their football team but what's best to keep fans safe. "Whether it's limited seating, social distancing or no fans at all, the safety of you guys is obviously a major factor as well," Silverfield said. "So whatever they decide to be, so be it. I just know that regardless we got Tiger fans all over the country, especially here in the city of Memphis, that are anxious to watch us get back to work." - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Memphis has cracked the Top 25 behind the emergence of yet another impressive running back. Kenneth Gainwell has stepped in to more than just fill an unexpected void by becoming the leading rusher in the American Athletic Conference. The No. 23 Tigers lost running backs Darrell Henderson and Tony Pollard to the NFL draft. Patrick Taylor Jr., who rushed for over 1,100 yards last year, was injured in the season opener and hasn't played since. That opened the door for Gainwell to step into the spotlight. "It just made me a better player, made me a better back, really just learning as much as I could from those guys," Gainwell said.

Gainwell has run for 620 yards and has averaged 124 yards rushing per game to rank sixth among all Football Bowl Subdivision players heading into the Tigers' Saturday game at Temple (4-1, 1-0 American). The redshirt freshman is on pace to deliver the fourth 1,000-yard single-season rushing performance in the last three years for Memphis. That comes after Memphis (5-0, 1-0) didn't have a single 1,000-yard rusher from 2010-16. "We say it all the time - it's an offense that's built for playmakers," Memphis coach Mike Norvell said. "We try to go out and identify guys who can come into the system and we can really formulate plans that surround their talents and put them in position to showcase them, whether it's handing the ball to them or throwing the ball to them." - AP College Football

Midway through the second quarter Thursday night, everything was going Navy's way. As usual, the Midshipmen were controlling the ball, their defense was living up to its new reputation as a stingy unit and Memphis was struggling on both sides of the ball with Navy holding a 20-7 lead. "They looked tired on defense," Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said. "We felt like we had them right in our wheelhouse." Things were so bad early in the third quarter, the Memphis fans were booing quarterback Brady White. Then things changed. White led a second-half rally, finishing the game with 196 yards passing and three touchdowns as Memphis used big plays to defeat Navy 35-23. Kenneth Gainwell rushed for 104 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown on the Tigers opening play from scrimmage as Memphis (4-0, 1-0 American Athletic Conference) knocked Navy from the unbeaten ranks. - AP College Football
