Pittsburgh's attempt to salvage what has become a disappointing season won't include safety Paris Ford. Coach Pat Narduzzi confirmed Monday that Ford, a redshirt junior, has opted out of the Panthers' final four games. "Paris is a tremendous football player, a tremendous person," Narduzzi said. "We wish him all the best in his endeavors as he moves on through this football world and the rest of his life." Ford spent a portion of the offseason wavering between playing and sitting out before joining the Panthers following a breakout 2019 in which he was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection after collecting three interceptions to go along with a team-high 97 tackles.

"All along, Paris has had these thoughts in his mind going back to last year in February when he decided to stay, and then there's all the opting out going on in the middle of summer during camp," Narduzzi said. "So he took a few days back then to think about it long and hard." Ford had three picks and 45 tackles for the Panthers (3-4, 2-4 ACC), who have dropped four straight following a 3-0 start heading into Saturday's visit to Florida State (2-4, 1-4). His is the second high-profile departure for Pitt's defense. Defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman, an All-American in 2019, decided over the summer to take the season off and prepare for the NFL draft. Narduzzi said he does not believe Pitt's slide played a factor into Ford's decision to move on. Asked if he believes Ford will be the last player to opt out, Narduzzi said: "I don't see that at all. But you know, I don't have a crystal ball, and you never know." - AP College Football

2020 PAYCOM JIM THORPE AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Paris Ford, Pitt, Jr.,...Ford, who previously earned selection to the Bednarik Award watch list as a candidate for the nation's most outstanding defensive player, was one of six ACC defensive backs named to the Thorpe Award watch list this season. Touted as a preseason All-American ahead of the 2020 college football campaign by several reputable outlets, including Sporting News, Phil Steele and Athlon, Ford returns for the Panthers after establishing himself as one of the sport's rising stars in 2019. The Pittsburgh native finished last season with team-high totals in tackles (97) and interceptions (3), while ranking second in passes breakups (11) and forced fumbles (3). His dynamic defensive back play resulted in Ford earning first-team All-ACC honors and third-team All-America selection by Phil Steele. - Pitt Football

In response to the NCAA Board of Governor's vote to allow athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness (NIL), Pitt football announced Tuesday a partnership with marketing consultant and best-selling author Jeremy Darlow. Pitt's football players will have access to Darlow's online course, The DARLOW Rules, which is dedicated to helping student-athletes develop their personal brands. Members of the football team can speak directly to Darlow, who also has partnered with West Virginia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and UCLA, NFL stars Aaron Rodgers and Von Miller, soccer's Lionel Messi, auto racing's Dale Earnhardt Jr. and rappers Kanye West and Snoop Dogg.

That's in addition to Pitt's current Cathy and John Pelusi Family Life Skills Program, which uses career counseling to help prepare athletes for several post-graduate initiatives, including graduate school and community service. "At Pitt, the young men in our program are far more than just football players," coach Pat Narduzzi said in a statement. "They are students, leaders, citizens and future professionals who will make their mark on the world in many different ways. "We want to equip our student-athletes with skills and knowledge that will serve them for the rest of their lives. Jeremy shares our commitment to developing the total person, and I know our team is going to benefit greatly from his outstanding workshops and experiences." - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke said Wednesday if the football team is allowed into Heinz Field to play a normal season, fans will be a part of it. "If we're playing the game, we'll be playing it in front of fans," she said, speaking on a Zoom conference call with reporters. "If there is a concern about human contact, we wouldn't be playing the game. "I do feel fans are a part of the experience. Coaches and student-athletes playing the game with no one there, there is definitely something missing. We value that atmosphere.

"The social distancing, if those orders are still in place in the fall, we won't be having games as we know them now. If we're allowed to be around one another, hopefully, we would go back to what we would consider a normal football season." She said all ideas will be considered if and when it becomes necessary to adjust the football schedule. She also doesn't expect any serious schedule conflicts at Heinz Field with the Pittsburgh Steelers. But she said the 12 spring practices that were canceled last month probably won't be made up before training camp opens in August. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
