Brenden Jaimes, Nebraska, Player News
|
Brenden Jaimes will soon be sporting powder blue jerseys and protecting one of the top young quarterbacks in the NFL in southern California. The former Husker offensive tackle was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the fifth round of Saturday's NFL Draft. The Chargers will be getting a durable lineman who started a school-record 40 games at Nebraska. They're getting a prospect open to moving to guard after playing at tackle most of his playing career. And to the Chargers' liking, they're gett ing a player who told reporters Saturday that he has a chip on his shoulder. "I feel like I was just as good, if not better than some of these guys that have been drafted before me," said Jaimes, who was the 159th player taken. "Obviously they're all gre at players and they all deserve to go where they went, but I feel like I'm right up there with them. "I've always been doubted throughout my football career for being too light, not strong enough, not fast enough. It's just another obstacle to overcome." - Lincoln Journal Star

Nebraska left tackle Brenden Jaimes earned further recognition Wednesday when he received an official "invitation" to the NFL Draft Combine. The only problem? He won't actually get to go to Indianapolis for an event, nor will any of the 323 college footb all players around the country who got the same news. The combine, traditionally one of the most highly visible mile markers in the NFL Draft preparation process, is not being held in person this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, teams will conduct virtual interviews and psychological testing, and a few select in-person medical exams. That puts more emphasis on pro days on college campuses, which at Nebraska is slated for March 23. - Lincoln Journal Star

Jaimes is playing at a very high level, according to Dominic Raiola, an All-American at Nebraska in 2000 who was a starting center for the Detroit Lions from 2002-14. Retired and living in Fort Worth, Texas, Raiola started 203 games in the NFL. Consequen tly, he understands precisely what it takes to play in the trenches against the world's best linemen. Raiola watches Nebraska games closely and obviously pays close attention to the offensive line. He says Jaimes is "definitely" capable of playing in the NFL, in part because he likely could play either tackle or guard."You watch his tenacity, you see how big he is - and he's going to get stronger before the combine and the draft," Raiola said Monday during "Early Break" on 93.7 FM. "But the guy j ust dominates people. If you turn on the film, he shows up. I watch it close, and I watch him close. I definitely think he has what it takes to get in (the NFL). But it's all about opportunity and seizing your opportunity when you get in there. But I cer tainly think he's got a shot." - Lincoln Journal Star

Nebraska's senior offensive linemen spent a good part of a media availability back in March laying out the reality for the Husker offensive line in 2020. It's a veteran group, they said, which means there's no excuse for anything outside of high-level pe rformance. During a radio interview Tuesday, offensive line coach Greg Austin took it one step further regarding senior left tackle Brenden Jaimes in particular. "Brenden has the opportunity to be one of the best in the conference and one of the best in the country at his position," Austin said on the "Husker Sports Nightly" radio program.Nebraska has not had a first-team All-Big Ten offensive lineman since Spencer Long in 2012. Jaimes has started 33 straight games - including all 24 of the Scott Frost era at left tackle - and Austin said by the end of 2019 he considered the Austin, Texas, native to be a stalwart. "Really looking forward to seeing him grow and mature into the player that (former head coach Mike Riley's staff) recruited him to be ," Austin said. "Last year, we saw that guy take his game to another level, especially playing some elite pass-rushers. "He did a great job, especially late in the season against Iowa's premier pass-rusher (first-round draft pick A.J. Epenesa). So we're looking forward to watching him go out there and compete." - Lincoln Journal Star

Jaimes is the first of several players on this list who would rank much higher were it ranking the most important on the roster rather than the most intriguing. Jaimes anchors what should be a deep Nebraska offensive line and is poised to become a member of a rare club as a four-year starter up front. The Austin, Texas, native stepped in as a true freshman in 2017, starting the fourth game of the season. He hasn't looked back since, cracking the lineup in each of Nebraska's past 33 games. The intr igue, really, has nothing to do with the depth chart. Jaimes is anchored at left tackle and will be counted on there again this fall. Instead, the intrigue is more about how much Jaimes can make of his final collegiate season. He talked openly before the spring about wanting to take a bigger leadership role. In fact, it was one of the reasons he decided to return for his senior season. - Lincoln Journal Star
