Isaiah Kaufusi, Brigham Young, Player News

Losing is always painful for a competitor. When a team has enjoyed a season of successes, a defeat hurts even more. That was pretty evident when BYU senior Isaiah Kaufusi got emotional when talking to reporters on a teleconference after the disappointing 22-17 loss at Coastal Carolina on Saturday evening. "It's always tough to lose, especially in that fashion where we had a chance to win and then we came up short," Kaufusi said. "There are a lot different emotions and feelings, which are all really good . It's good for guys to feel these. It's just part of the game." He got choked up as he added, "I love my team, man. I love these guys, love what we stand for, who we stand for. The pandemic has taught us to not take things for granted. It's a blessing t o be out there with my guys and my brothers. They've changed my life."While the defeat definitely stung, it also showed plenty of ways the Cougars need to improve. BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said that while there were definitely things that the Cougars did well, he believed a lot of that was because of what Coastal Carolina was doing. "Maybe we didn't play as well as we could have but I think you have to look at whether it was what they did or whether it was our mental errors," Sitake said. "Th at's something we are going to have to look at and communicate with our guys, then try to improve on. I just want to make sure I don't take anything away from what Coastal Carolina has done." - Daily Herald

Kaufusi believes that the time he spent during the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine helped lay the groundwork for him to be a better player this year. "I really had to dig deep and decide who I wanted to be and how quarantine would affect me," Kaufusi said. "My mentality switched and I worked really hard. I just wanted to become better in all aspects of the game and quarantine was a huge blessing for me. I got my body feeling really good. The process was putting in work every single day. Nobody was watching and here the fruits of my labor are coming through." Kaufusi said getting in the end zone was even more special to be able to make that play in the first game of 2020 where fans were allowed to watch a game in Provo, which meant his family was there to see it. "It's a great feeling to do it in front of my family who was in attendance," Kaufusi said. "To have that pick-6 in LaVell Edwards Stadium will be a memory I will cherish forever. I am really pumped about it." - Daily Herald

BYU linebackers coach Ed Lamb felt like senior linebacker Isaiah Kaufusi had one of his best games during the 27-20 Cougar win over UTSA at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday. "I thought he played with his hair on fire," Lamb said on the Coordinator's Co rner show on Monday. "Where he elevated his play in this last game that I have not seen him do before is his contact courage. He completely flew by one of the pulling offensive linemen and took down the running back. I thought he inspired the guys to han g in there and keep adjusting. He is a valuable, valuable leader for us."It's often when things aren't going well or when a team isn't performing at the highest level that leaders are needed the most. That is why this is a big time for the BYU tea m leaders both during Saturday's closer-than-expected victory and also now preparing to head on the road for a big test at Houston on Friday night (7:30 p.m MT, ESPN). "I think it is important as a leader to keep the guys level-headed, even when the emot ions are high in a game," Cougar senior safety Troy Warner said during Monday's press conference. "It's important to keep our heads in it, help them not to dwell on it. It's about what they can do to be better. We dealt with some adversity during that ga me but I'm glad we were able to grind out the win." - Daily Herald
