K.J. Britt plans to head to Mobile in January. The Auburn senior linebacker and team captain formally accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl on Thursday, the Senior Bowl announced on Twitter. Britt has appeared in only two games this season for Auburn, as he has been sidelined since undergoing surgery on his thumb on Oct. 9. In his two games against Kentucky an d Georgia, Britt totaled 23 tackles, including one for a loss. The 6-foot, 243-pound linebacker out of Oxford is expected to return late this season, though no target return date has been given by Auburn coach Gus Malzahn. For his career, Britt has recor ded 119 tackles in 42 games. Last season he earned first-team All-SEC honors after totaling 69 tackles. - Birmingham News

Auburn may not have to play without its defensive leader for too much longer. First-team All-SEC linebacker K.J. Britt, who has missed the last four games following thumb surgery, is still expected back before the end of the regular season and potentiall y in time for the Iron Bowl. The expectation all along has been that Britt, who underwent surgery Oct. 9, would miss about six weeks and that he should be back for at least the last two games of the regular season, sources told AL.com. - Birmingham News

K.J. Britt stood beside Owen Pappoe as he led a pregame huddle on the field at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday morning. Just minutes earlier, he watched on as his fellow teammates went through pregame warmups, patting several on the back and offerin g words of encouragement before kickoff against Ole Miss. Britt wasn't in uniform for Auburn's 35-28 win, but after not being present for the last two games following thumb surgery on Oct. 9, the Tigers' senior linebacker and team captain made the trip t o Oxford, Miss. He's not expected back until late this season, but his presence on the sideline Saturday was meaningful for the Tigers in a make-or-break game. "K.J.'s one of our team leaders, and just to have him back is a blessing for us," sophomore li nebacker Owen Pappoe said. "In the locker room, in the hotel, on the way here, he's just that energizer bunny for us, just keeping us pumped. If you look around on the field, he just calms us down, you know? It was really good to have him back on the fie ld with us."Britt was Auburn's leading tackler through two games, and he was an All-SEC selection at linebacker heading into the season. He injured his thumb during the early-season loss to Georgia - when he played through the injury to finish the game - but underwent surgery less than a week later. Losing him was a tough blow for Auburn's defense, given his acumen against the run as well as the overall leadership and energy he provides. On a younger defense replacing six starters from last seaso n, Britt was a steadying force. "His presence is really special," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "He's our team leader, not just offense, defense, special teams. But his presence was really big today." - Birmingham News

How do you make up for a loss like K.J. Britt? Auburn coach Gus Malzahn didn't have an answer for that. "That's a tough blow," Malzahn said. Luckily, that's a question Auburn won't have to deal with the whole season. Malzahn announced Tuesday that he exp ects Britt to return before the end of the year. Heading into the season, Britt was named a first-team All-SEC player, an honor he was also given at the end of the 2019 season. He was one of two Auburn Tigers named to the first team. Just before the seas on began, he was given another title: team captain. "He's not only just a great player, but he's a great leader," Malzahn said. When Britt hit the field in the season opener, he led the defense with 11 tackles. He also led the defense as he directed play ers from the middle of the field. Britt continued that performance in the next game against Georgia, making 12 tackles, the third most on the team. He did so despite having to leave the game multiple times because of what he called some "nicks and bruise s." Linebacker Owen Pappoe said after the game that Britt's fighting spirit and "heart" made an impact on the rest of the team. - Birmingham News

At the end of each day, laptops are opened and cameras are turned on across the country as Auburn Tigers hop onto Zoom. After months and years of seeing each other almost every day, the Auburn football players' interaction with each other is now limited to these calls. Nobody needs to be convinced to log on and join the conversation. "Right now everybody's really just happy to be around each other and really happy to make sure we still talk every day," linebacker K.J. Britt said. "Because that's somethi ng that goes unseen but is really missed, just the communication that we have between each other." In this new age, the Zoom age, everything team-related and school related has to be done virtually. Britt takes class online, chats with his teammates onli ne and meets with his coaches online. It doesn't come anywhere near the type of involvement the senior is used to."There's not much we can do, just install and have meetings, ask questions, have the coaches talk, let us talk," Britt said. "That's about it. Those meetings go by so fast because they're not that long, so it's just like that." The players do everything else on their own. They've been given workouts and nutrition plans, but they can't be required to check in. It's left up to them to d o it by themselves. They do extra workouts and film study on their own, as well. Britt has been focusing on his own tape to figure out ways he can get better while quarterback Bo Nix has been putting in time trying to learn the new offense. While the coa ches have only had time to get a few parts of the install in, Nix has decided to push ahead on his own. - Birmingham News
