Before the game, OSU recognized 21 players, many of whom were playing their final game at Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday. Among them was Hubbard, the junior running back who has been widely expected to leave for the NFL Draft after the season. Saturda y's recognition solidified that expectation. Seniors like Wallace, Jenkins and Williams are also bound for the NFL, while others will have a decision to make. The NCAA ruled that players would not lose a year of eligibility, regardless of participation i n a sport in the fall of 2020. Thus, the seniors retain their final year of eligibility and can return next fall if they wish. - Daily Oklahoman

Spencer Sanders passed for 235 yards and ran for 71 and a touchdown in his return from injury, and No. 6 Oklahoma State defeated No. 17 Iowa State 24-21 on Saturday. Sanders had been out since injuring his right ankle in the season-opener against Tulsa. Chuba Hubbard ran for 139 yards and a touchdown for Oklahoma State (4-0, 3-0 Big 12). With the win, the Cowboys joined Kansas State as the only remaining undefeated teams in conference play. The Cyclones (3-2, 3-1) vaulted onto the national radar by beat ing Oklahoma earlier in the month and were seeking their first ever 4-0 start in league play. Iowa State’s Breece Hall, who was second nationally in yards rushing per game, ran for a career-high 185 yards. With Oklahoma State leading 14-7 late in the s econd quarter, Iowa State drove deep into Oklahoma State territory but had to settle for a field goal attempt. Connor Assalley’s 33-yard kick bounced off the right upright with 1:22 left in the first half. It was his second missed field goal of the fir st half, and Oklahoma State took its seven-point lead into the break. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Heisman hopeful running back Chuba Hubbard finally burst onto the scene this season with 20 carries for 145 yards and two touchdowns in just over one half of work. His 7.25 yards per carry was his best output this season, and the sixth game in the past t wo years in which Hubbard rushed for more than 7 yards an attempt. "I was thoroughly (impressed). It was great to see him get out there on the perimeter, stretch those legs and get that speed," Dunn said. "...It was good to see him get out there on the p erimeter today and get some space in some green grass." - Stillwater Press

A week ago against Tulsa, with an offensive line in shambles, Hubbard had to grind out 93 yards on 27 carries. On Saturday, he had 101 yards on 22 attempts - two yards fewer than backfield-mate LD Brown, who had half as many carries. Hubbard's hold-your- breath-when-he-touches-the-ball talent has yet to be on display this season. Maybe it has to do with an inexperienced and injury-riddled offensive line, or defenses ganging up to stop him when there's a third-string, true freshman quarterback running the offense. Or maybe something else is off in Hubbard's game. Saturday's two fumbles were uncharacteristic of Hubbard, who committed himself to better ball security after an early-season fumble last year against McNeese. "It's not good when you put the bal l on the ground," OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "He knows that and he's gotta do a better job of taking care of the football. He did come back in late and made a cut and made a score and did good for us. "But this is not a secret. He needs to take care of t he football. We have to have him healthy, rushing the ball and taking care of the football in order for us to be a good offensive football team." - Daily Oklahoman

Chuba Hubbard scored on a 23-yard run with 1:17 remaining to salvage a difficult afternoon and help No. 15 Oklahoma State beat West Virginia 27-13 on Saturday. Sidelined for a number of key plays after fumbling on consecutive second-half possessions, Hub bard ended up with 101 yards on 22 rushes for his 12th 100-yard performance in his last 13 games. With the additional action, Hubbard's backup, L.D. Brown, gained 103 yards on 11 carries, including a 66-yard touchdown run, for Oklahoma State (2-0, 1-0 Bi g 12). True freshman backup quarterback Shane Illingworth, in his first collegiate start, completed 15 of 21 passes for 139 yards, but also had an interception, for the Cowboys.Jarret Doege threw for 285 yards and a touchdown for West Virginia (1- 1, 0-1), which actually outgained Oklahoma State 353-342. Just as Chuba Hubbard began his Zoom call with the media last Tuesday, the Oklahoma State running back was informed he had been named a preseason All-American by ESPN. Hubbard cracked a half-smile. "That's cool, I guess," he said. Maybe Hubbard cares dee ply on the inside about personal accomplishments. If so, he's a master illusionist when it comes to hiding those feelings. Hubbard enters the season as Oklahoma State's best Heisman Trophy contender since receiver Justin Blackmon finished fifth in 2010. "It's a big year for our team," Hubbard said when asked about the individual accomplishments that could be awaiting him in 2020. "I wouldn't say it's just a big year for me. I didn't come back to break records for myself. I came back to win a Big 12 cham pionship and a national championship with my team. That's my main goal." Of course, to accomplish those goals, it'll likely take a Heisman-type season from someone at Oklahoma State, and Hubbard is the prime candidate after his 2,094-yard season a year a go. Yet even that didn't get him close to a finalist spot in New York. Those spots went to quarterbacks of playoff teams. A running back hasn't finished in the top four of the Heisman voting since Bryce Love was the runner-up in 2017. - Daily Oklahoman

After using Twitter to affect change in the Oklahoma State football program, running back Chuba Hubbard is stepping away from social media. Bothered by his social media accounts becoming "a playground for hate," Hubbard reactivated his Twitter account, @ Hubbard_RMN, Tuesday when he wrote a message that said he will not be using social media "until further notice." Hubbard, the Cowboys' star running back, had deleted his Twitter account Monday, hours after posting three consecutive tweets that criticized and called for the resignation of Oklahoma County district attorney David Prater.Protesters marched outside Prater's office on Monday, upset with Prater both for filing terrorism charges against some demonstrators and for clearing the Edmond poli ce officers involved in the fatal shooting of a naked Black teenager, Isaiah Lewis, last year. Hubbard posted the tweets about Prater late Monday afternoon. By the end of the day, his Twitter account was deactivated. But he reactivated it and posted Tues day's message. "I have never incited or promoted violence or hate," he wrote. "All I've done is voice my opinion on issues I feel are not ethical!" - Daily Oklahoman

Mike Holder says he was unaware the disconnect between OSU's football coach and OSU's football players had grown so wide. And I believe the Cowboy athletic director. Holder is hands off. He coached an elite team, OSU golf, for more than three decades and didn't like meddling athletic directors. So Holder wasn't going to be one. "I trust all of our coaches to do their job," Holder said Friday. "I've got a job to do of my own, and really micromanaging any of our coaches doesn't fit into my job description . So I trust them to do their job. And their No.1 responsibility is to nurture their players, develop a relationship with them, make a difference in their life, and as I said earlier, send them out into the world and make a difference for society." Holde r admits that philosophy failed OSU, when Gundy's lack of relationships with his players turned into a forest fire that has scarred the Cowboy football brand. But that hands-off philosophy isn't likely to change. "I'm probably not going to change going f orward," Holder said, "because at my age, it's pretty hard to teach this old dog new tricks. I'm pretty set in my ways." Oh, the irony. Because with OSU keeping Gundy, via a reduced contract and humbled persona, Holder is counting on an old dog to learn new tricks. - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy's job is safe. University president Burns Hargis and Cowboys athletic director Mike Holder both announced Thursday night that Gundy will remain the head football coach following a 17-day internal investigation. They determ ined Gundy's issue was distance from his players - not racism. "Our internal review found that Coach Gundy needs to invest more time in building stronger relationships with his student-athletes," Holder said in a statement. "However, our review has uncov ered no signs or indication of racism."After meeting with Coach Gundy, I am confident that he listened to his student-athletes. I believe he is genuine in his commitment to strengthening relationships with his players. I believe this to be a win f or everyone. I'm looking forward to seeing the impact this will have on our team." The ruling brings to end a turbulent spring for Gundy, who has coached the Cowboys since 2005. He opened April with an hour-long teleconference in which he supported One A merica News Network, a far-right, pro-Donald Trump cable news network rated by Media Bias/Fact Check as being "not a credible news source." - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma State star running back Chuba Hubbard said Thursday morning that his relationship with coach Mike Gundy is "a work in progress." Making an appearance on ESPN's "First Take," Hubbard spoke candidly about the past week, his relationship before and after with Gundy and his reaction to the One America News Network T-shirt Gundy wore in a photograph. "Me and Coach Gundy's relationship is a work in progress," Hubbard said. "He's admitted to his faults, and he's trying to move forward. I see that as a positive first step." Hubbard said even before Gundy's shirt that their relationship was a work in progress. And Hubbard is still holding Gundy accountable."Every relationship has bumpy roads, whether it's a good relationship or bad relationship, " Hubbard said. "Coach Gundy has done a lot of good things, so I will not just shut out a man for one thing he did, but he did do wrong and he's going to have to make up for that." Hubbard said Monday that he would no longer participate in OSU activities after he saw Gundy's shirt on Twitter. Several current and former players supported Hubbard. That evening, Hubbard and Gundy filmed a video together with Hubbard apologizing for not going to Gundy personally. Gundy did not apologize, but said there woul d be changes. - Daily Oklahoman

The sordid saga surrounding Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy has oozed its way into an unfortunate corner of Colorado football history. Gundy, outspoken even in quiet times, came under fire this week after a photo surfaced from a fishing trip las t week in which he was donning a T-shirt for One American News, the far-right cable channel that attempts to legitimize wild conspiracy theories and once dismissed the Black Lives Matter agenda as a farce. Gundy has since offered two different apology vi deos after OSU star running back Chuba Hubbard led an online player revolt attempting to hold Gundy accountable for his views. While Gundy attempts to reconcile with his players, scrutiny over his past actions has unearthed charges made by former Colorad o star Alfred Williams that Gundy, then OSU's quarterback, called him the N-word multiple times during a 1989 game between the Buffaloes and Cowboys.A story on Nov. 12, 1989 in the Daily Oklahoman - one day after a 41-17 CU victory at OSU - report ed Williams' postgame comments, with several of his fellow Buffs defenders backing up Williams' story. That report also features quotes from former CU linebacker Kanavis McGhee saying Gundy also directed racial epitaphs toward him. On Wednesday, Williams , now a radio host with CU's broadcast partners at KOA 850, was interviewed anew by the Oklahoman and said that was the only time during a football career that included nine seasons in the NFL in which racial slurs were hurled at him on the field. - Dail y Camera

The college football world was set ablaze when Oklahoma State senior running back Chuba Hubbard - one of the nation's top players - threatened to sit out over Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy's apparent appreciation for the far-right TV network One America News. Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard says he won't associate himself with the school after head coach Mike Gundy wore far-right cable network's shirt: In a statement on Monday, Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder responded, "This afte rnoon has been very disturbing, The tweets from the current and former players are of grave concern."Oklahoma State president Burns Hargis also released a statement. "I hear and respect the concerns expressed by our Black student-athletes," Hargis said. "This is a time for unity of our purpose to confront racial inequities and injustice. We will not tolerate insensitive behavior by anyone at Oklahoma State." In other words, it seems like applied pressure by current and former players is winning. - Burnt Orange Nation

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy and superstar running back Chuba Hubbard ended the new video with a hug Monday night. But hours before, the two were on opposite sides. Monday was a wild day that started with Gundy wearing a shirt of far-right, pro-Trump cable news network One America News in a photo posted on social media. That led to Hubbard saying he would no longer participate in Cowboys activities until changes were made, drawing national attention and support from current and former players. By nig htfall, the two appeared to make up. In a video posted to Hubbard's Twitter account, Gundy said he met with players and was ready to make changes. "In light of today's tweet with the T-shirt I was wearing, I met with some players and realized it's a very sensitive issue with what's going on in today's society," Gundy said standing next to Hubbard. "We had a great meeting and made aware of some things players feel like that can make our organization and our culture even better than it is here at Oklahoma State.Hubbard then apologized for his tweet, saying he should have gone to Gundy in person. "I'll start off by first saying I went about it the wrong way by tweeting," Hubbard said. "I'm not someone that has to tweet something to make change. I s hould've went to him as a man. I'm all about action. That was bad on my part. "From now on, we're going to focus on bringing change, and that's the most important thing." - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma State is bringing football back as soon as possible. OSU coaches and staff members were tested for COVID-19 on Friday and players are allowed to return to campus Monday to prepare for voluntary workouts on June 15, OSU coach Mike Gundy announced on his Twitter page Friday morning. An OSU official said no coach or players are being forced to return to campus next week. The official also said all players who return will be brought in by groups for testing. They will then be quarantined on campus for two weeks. After the two-week period, players can begin voluntary workouts.Voluntary workouts are not organized team workouts, but facilities are open and players can use equipment for running, weightlifting, etc. No university staff member ca n lead a workout, but they can be present only for safety protocols. June 15 is the first date the Big 12 allows voluntary football workouts as part of a phased return to activities, even though the NCAA Division I Council voted to allow voluntary workou ts starting Monday. - Daily Oklahoman

Chuba Hubbard might be alone more than he expected since his recent return to Oklahoma State's campus. He's sticking to his routine - an early workout, breakfast and then homework - and then a free day. Often, he walks around campus. "I just try to fill in that space with something new," Hubbard said. Boredom often rules the day of a closed college campus due to the coronavirus pandemic. But for nearly the entire past two months campus was closed and spring football was shuttered, Hubbard was elsewhere. He was building for his future staying with a former teammate in Baltimore. "You guys probably know him," Hubbard said Wednesday in a Zoom call following the announcement that he won the Cornish Trophy. "Justice."In a time where Hubbard's spring preparations for what's likely his final season as a Cowboy were stunted, he turned to a former teammate and friend for guidance. Hubbard and fellow Canadian teammate Amen Ogbongbemiga headed east to Baltimore and stayed with former OSU star and current Ravens running back Justice Hill. There, Hill helped prepare Hubbard more for the NFL life. They quarantined from the rest of the world. They worked out. They bonded. "Pretty much doing what we're supposed to be doing in quarantine," Hubbard said. "J-Hil l helped me out with a lot of stuff, actually," Hubbard said. "Trust me, he helped me out with a lot of stuff. I can't tell y'all. Y'all got to see on the field, but he gave me some tips and stuff, so I'm excited." - Daily Oklahoman

Like many people, the past few months have left Chuba Hubbard with plenty of time to think. His excitement for Oklahoma State's football season to begin - whenever that happens - is growing each day he sits in his campus dorm room alone with his thoughts . "I just want to run the ball," Hubbard said. Whether that's in primetime Sept. 3 against Oregon State or in October or even next spring, Hubbard isn't too concerned. He plans to suit up for the Cowboys for likely one final season. "Right now, I'm plann ing on playing next year," Hubbard said. "That's the plan."Hubbard was named the recipient of the Cornish Trophy - the award given annually to Canada's top NCAA football player - on Wednesday. It was a fitting finale for his huge breakout 2019 cam paign in which he led the country in rushing. It also brought up questions about his future. Hubbard announced his plans to return in the middle of January, raising the expectations for a Cowboys squad returning a plethora of talent around their Canadian star. But that was nearly two months before the coronavirus pandemic shut down the sports world. Things are now different. As of now, college football season remains on schedule. Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy issued a statement Saturday afternoon apologizing for his comments during a teleconference Tuesday. "I have been made aware that comments from my press conference have offended some," Gundy said in the written statement. " It was never my intention to offend anyone and I apologize. My first priority is and will always be the student-athletes and doing what is best for the program and the university." On Tuesday, Gundy unveiled a plan with the hope to start bringing staff m embers back on campus around May 1 and players soon after, with testing for COVID-19 provided to everybody. That led to a firestorm for the veteran coach. He also emphasized the financial impact of football returning and said football players could "figh t it off with their natural body, the antibodies and build that they have." - Daily Oklahoman

Mike Gundy wants a plan, and he's already pushing one for Oklahoma State football. With Stillwater's current shelter in place declaration being through April 16 - which could be extended - Gundy said he is hopeful to return to some form of normalcy by th e beginning of May in a teleconference Tuesday as his first interaction with the media since the NCAA and Big 12 Conference shut down sports for the remainder of the spring. "How fast that can happen based on the tests that are available, I can't say rig ht now, but that's the plan," Gundy said. "We have to have a plan, and the plan right now is for them to start on May 1."It might get backed up two weeks. I don't know, I can't make that call, but if it does, we'll start with the employees of this company, the ones that come in this building. Then we'll bring the players in, and slowly but surely we'll test them all in." He said they had 105 athletes on campus for spring football, but sent most of them home - with only three remaining on the Stil lwater campus. But he's hopeful to have them all back soon, and to be able to play football this fall. - Stillwater Press

Oklahoma State's Chuba Hubbard turned in his fourth 200-yard rushing performance of the season, and it came against an unlikely opponent. Hubbard carried 20 times for 223 yards against TCU and became the first player to go for 200 against the Horned Frog s since Gary Patterson took over as head coach in 2000. TCU went into the game 15th against the run (103.7 ypg) and had allowed just six rushes of 20-plus yards. Hubbard broke runs of 92 and 62 yards while piling up 192 in the second half in the Cowboys' 34-27 win.Hubbard has rushed for at least 100 yards in seven straight games, the longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision. His nation-leading 178.2 yards per game put him on pace for 2,317 in 13 games, assuming the Cowboys don't pla y in the Big 12 championship game. That would be the highest total since 2014, when Melvin Gordon ran for 2,587 yards in 14 games for Wisconsin. TCU's Gary Patterson has long been known as one of the best defensive coaches in college football -- especially against the run. Oklahoma State's Chuba Hubbard, the nation's leading rusher, treated Patterson's highly ranked unit just like the rest of the m. The sophomore speedster piled up 223 yards rushing, including two long touchdowns, to help Oklahoma State defeat TCU 34-27 on Saturday. Hubbard rambled for 192 yards in the second half. A TCU spokesman said Hubbard became the first player to rush for at least 200 yards against TCU in Patterson's 19-year run as head coach. "When Chuba gets through there, nobody can catch him," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. "That makes him different than other players."Spencer Sanders passed for 158 yard s and ran for 88 and Dillon Stoner caught three passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns for the Cowboys (6-3, 3-3 Big 12), who became become bowl eligible for 14th straight year.Oklahoma State played without star receiver Tylan Wallace, who reporte dly tore an ACL during the week. Gundy said Wallace, a Biletnikoff Award finalist last season, is out for the season. "It's just hard for a coach to swallow," Gundy said. "It just almost ruined my week when I left the office, when I went home. When I go home, it just makes me sick to where I can hardly function. It's hard to lose a guy like that, not only as a player, but also as a person, what he brings to the table." Kolby Harvell-Peel led Oklahoma State's defense with two interceptions and a fumble r ecovery. Max Duggan passed for 258 yards and rushed for 86 for TCU (4-4, 2-3), but he threw three interceptions. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard's wildly successful season has made a lifelong issue a much smaller problem. For as far back as Hubbard can remember, folks have struggled to pronounce his first name. Most say CHUB-uh. He even heard someone thro w his first and last name together and come up with Choohubbard. For the record, it's pronounced CHOO-buh. And since he leads the nation in rushing and all-purpose yards, people are finally starting to get it right. "They are trying," he said. "As long a s they are trying, I get it. As long as they are saying my name some type of way, I guess it's a good thing."He is giving people plenty of reasons to practice. He has rushed for 1,381 yards this season in eight games, an average of 172.6 yards per contest, and ranks second nationally with 16 rushing touchdowns heading into Saturday's home game against TCU. It's been enough to draw attention from former Oklahoma State and NFL star running back Barry Sanders, a Heisman Trophy winner. "He congratula ted me on how the season's going," Hubbard said. "I would have never thought in a million years that Barry Sanders would be congratulating me. It's cool." Hubbard has approached some of Sanders' numbers. He rushed for a career-high 296 yards in a win ove r Kansas State, one of three games this season in which he has rushed for at least 200 yards. - AP College Football

Iowa State (5-3, 3-2) then stuffed Hubbard on a 4th-and-1 near midfield with just under 3 mi nutes left. But quarterback Brock Purdy threw another ill-advised pass that was picked off shortly thereafter -- then another interception in the final seconds that sealed the Cyclones' fate.
