There were only four running backs taken in the first three rounds and only two - Alabama running back Najee Harris (No. 24 by Pittsburgh) and Clemson running back Travis Etienne (No. 25 by Jacksonville) - went in the opening round. Herbert was the 14th running back taken overall. He led the ACC with 1,791 all-purpose yards last fall and had 1,182 yards with eight touchdowns and ranked second in the conference averaging 7.68 yards per carry (sixth nationally). - Roanoke Times

Khalil Herbert ran for 162 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown, and Virginia Tech ended a four-game slide with a 33-15 victory against rival Virginia on Saturday night. The Hokies (5-6, 5-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) also got a big play from Tayvion Rob inson, who turned a short pass from Braxton Burmeister into a 60-yard TD, a scoring run from wide receiver Tre Turner and four field goals from Brian Johnson to regain the Commonwealth Cup. Virginia (5-5, 4-5) had its four-game win streak end. The Cavali ers drove 75 yards for a touchdown and a 7-3 lead with their first possession, but managed just 71 yards the rest of the half while the Hokies scored all five times they had the ball to lead 27-7 at halftime.Turner's 6-yard run capped a 17-play dr ive to give the Hokies a 10-7 lead, and after Johnson's second field goal and a Virginia punt, Herbert bolted off the right side and raced untouched down the center of the field for his longest run of the season. On Virginia Tech's next possession, with halftime looming, Burmeister hit Robinson along the Hokies sideline, he spun away from cornerback De'Vante Cross and raced down the sideline, scoring 31 seconds before the half. - Virginia Tech/AP College Football

Virginia Tech and Khalil Herbert were absolutely dominating this aspect of games earlier this season. Herbert ran for 592 yards in his first four games, before suffering a hamstring injury. He's had just 428 yards in the six games since. But in Saturday' s loss to Clemson, Herbert ran for 96 yards and a score. If center Brock Hoffman can lead the offensive line without committing major penalties, this can be a dominant unit again. - Richmond Times-Dispatch

Virginia Tech running back Khalil Herbert's kickoff return with 9:46 left in the first quarter was his first and only play of the game. A few minutes after the 12-yard return a Tech spokesperson confirmed Herbert was ruled out for the rest of the game wi th a hamstring injury. The Kansas transfer came into the game with 803 rushing yards (8.4 yards per carry) with six touchdowns. Coach Justin Fuente was tight-lipped about Hebert's status in his post game press conference. "He played one play and his hams tring was bothering him," Fuente said. "It's been a little bit of an issue for a little while." Tech relied on quarterback Hendon Hooker to power the team's rushing attack in the loss. Hooker ran the ball 20 times (one shy of his career high) for 156 yar ds. Rutgers transfer Raheem Blackshear had nine carries for 33 yards and Jalen Holston had one carry for 12 yards. - Roanoke Times

By now, you've heard about Herbert's skills running the football. He's second in the nation in yards per carry (8.36), fourth in rushing yards per game (133.8) and has rushed for at least 100 yards in five of six games. Those eye-popping numbers have him in consideration for postseason honors as one of the nation's top tailbacks. What gets lost in his ability to be an explosive running back is what he brings in the kickoff return game, which is why he is among the national leaders in all-purpose yards p er game (nearly 206). Herbert is averaging 31.8 yards on 10 kickoff returns, and he's been able to give the Hokies good starting field position when he's able to return a kickoff. When Herbert is able to touch the ball, he has proven he can make somethin g happen. - Lynchburg News and Advance

Khalil Herbert ran for 208 yards and two touchdowns, including a 60-yard score with 2:20 left, to help shorthanded Virginia Tech hold off Duke for a 38-31 win on Saturday. The Kansas graduate transfer's huge day included an 83-yard kickoff return that se t up a short third-quarter scoring drive for the Hokies (2-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). Herbert's other score was a 23-yard sprint around the left side to the end zone for a 31-21 lead with 9:58 left. Braxton Burmeister also scored on two keepers f or Virginia Tech, which was down 21 players and two full-time coaches due to a combination of coronavirus and injury issues. The Hokies' defense also came up big by forcing a three-and-out after Burmeister lost a fumble to give Duke a chance for the lead with 4 1/2 minutes left. Herbert took care of the rest, breaking loose around the left side again for the 60-yarder for a 38-28 lead while cracking the 200-yard mark to essentially seal this one. Deon Jackson scored twice on the ground for the Blue Devi ls (0-4, 0-4), including when he shot up the middle for a 10-yard score that gave Duke a 14-10 lead with 11:27 left in the third. - Virginia Tech/AP College Football
