Virginia Tech running back Khalil Herbert's kickoff return with 9:46 left in the first quarter was his first and only play of the game. A few minutes after the 12-yard return a Tech spokesperson confirmed Herbert was ruled out for the rest of the game with a hamstring injury. The Kansas transfer came into the game with 803 rushing yards (8.4 yards per carry) with six touchdowns. Coach Justin Fuente was tight-lipped about Hebert's status in his post game press conference. "He played one play and his hamstring was bothering him," Fuente said. "It's been a little bit of an issue for a little while." Tech relied on quarterback Hendon Hooker to power the team's rushing attack in the loss. Hooker ran the ball 20 times (one shy of his career high) for 156 yards. Rutgers transfer Raheem Blackshear had nine carries for 33 yards and Jalen Holston had one carry for 12 yards. - Roanoke Times
