Riley Patterson kicked a 47-yard field goal as time expired to give Memphis a 30-27 win over Houston following the Cougars' improbable comeback on Saturday. Trailing 27-6 at the end of third, Houston's Clayton Tune threw a pair of touchdown passes around his 19-yard scoring run in the final quarter to tie it at 27 with less than a half-minute left to play. Tune threw a 13-yard score to Marquez Stevenson early in the fourth after a 10-play, 75-yard drive. His touchdown on the ground came five minutes later with 8:01 remaining. The game-tying drive ended when Tune threw an 18-yard scoring pass to Bryson Smith with 28 seconds to go. On the 15-play, 70-yard march, the Cougars had two conversions on fourth down to keep the drive going.

Brady White responded to lead Memphis (7-3, 5-3 American Athletic Conference) on a 5-play, 46-yard drive to set up Patterson. The Tigers were aided by a 15-yard pass interference play on Thabo Mwaniki as he defended Calvin Austin III. White found Austin two plays later on a 22-yard reception in which the receiver bent backwards across his body and appeared to injure his leg. With the win, Memphis finished a second consecutive season undefeated at home for the first time in program history. - Memphis/AP College Football

There's a new passing touchdown king at Memphis and it's Brady White. White's 48-yard pass to Tahj Washington in the first quarter against Stephen F. Austin on Saturday gave him 82 for his career, passing Danny Wimprine for the all-time lead in Memphis history. It also came on Senior Day as White was one of 17 seniors honored pregame. White's first touchdown came in his first game in 2018 on a 45-yard pass to Damonte Coxie against Mercer. It's another record in his Tigers career as White's 24 wins are the most by a Memphis starting quarterback. He's also approaching Wimprine's school record of 10,215 passing yards as White entered Saturday with 9.438 passing yards.

"When I first stepped on campus, I didn't think about crap for records. I thought about just bringing in wins to this program and helping this program elevate," White said this week. "My first year, I think I said after the bowl game it was a great learning experience and a really good environment to be thrown into. "At the end of the day, I hope to be all-time guy in every area. That'd be great but that's not my focus and that's not my goal...I want to win as much as possible, however that comes, is what matters." - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Austin had 117 return yards to go along with 173 yards receiving for Memphis (5-2), which has won 14 straight home games. Kylan Watkins rushed for 100 yards. The Lumberjacks (6-4) scored on Trae Self's 7-yard pass to Xavier Gipson in the final minute of the half to get within 20-14. The Lumberjacks were outgained 574-224 with Self being intercepted twice.   Brady White's sixth touchdown pass with just over a minute remaining completed a school-record 21-point comeback and the Tigers beat UCF 50-49 on Saturday to snap a 13-game losing streak to the Knights. After White found Calvin Austin for a 4-yard score and a two-point try failed, the Knights (2-2, 1-2 American Athletic) drove to the Memphis 22 before Daniel Obarski pulled a 40-yard field-goal attempt left with 19 seconds remaining. On the Tigers' winning drive, a shovel pass to Tahj Washington on fourth down went for 52 yards to the UCF 5. Three plays later White tossed the game-winner to a diving Austin on the left side of the end zone.

UCF led 27-14 at halftime, had a 21-point lead early in the third quarter and led 35-29 entering the final quarter during which the teams combined for five touchdowns. The Tigers' comeback surpassed the school record of 17 points against Houston in 2017. White finished 34-of-50 passing for a school-record 486 yards in a duel with UCF's Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel became the first UCF quarterback to throw for over 500 yards and blew past that mark with 601 yards on 35-of-49 passing with five scores. There were no interceptions. UCF outgained Memphis 798-703 for 1,501 yards offense combined, eclipsing the conference record of 1,479 set by the same teams in a 2017 game.   10/05/20 - QB Brady WhiterSr/2021, Memphis, 6-1, 210 (DS#13 QB) + More +

Brady White was blunt in giving SMU credit for winning 30-27 Saturday. The Memphis quarterback was equally blunt describing his three turnovers, including a fumble that set up SMU's game-winning drive in the final minutes. "They obviously did enough to win but we should've definitely won that game," White said. "I've got to do a better job at capitalizing to help this offense take advantage of those changes (the defense) gives us and obviously finishing the game off there at the end." Memphis shouldn't have been in position to win in Dallas after trailing 24-3 in the second quarter. The Tigers looked slow and rusty after 28 days off due to a COVD-19 outbreak, and White's two first-half interceptions didn't help.

Yet there the Tigers (1-1, 0-1 AAC) were with 3:14 left. White led a drive into SMU territory thanks to a 32-yard pass to Calvin Austin III. There was hope Riley Patterson, who equaled a school and AAC record with a 56-yard field goal, would deliver once again. White's fumble, courtesy of a strip sack by SMU's Junior Aho, sealed the Tigers' fate. "At the end, you got to hold the ball no matter what," White said. "I had two hands on it but can't cough it up." After 11 days of not practicing and two weeks of transitioning back, it was easy to explain the Tigers' poor performance. The secondary gave up two long touchdowns to SMU receiver Reggie Roberson on third-down plays. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

The Memphis football program had no positive tests upon returning to campus last weekend, athletic director Laird Veatch announced Thursday. Veatch said that every player and staff member had been tested. "It really went exceptionally well. The players handled it really well, and it was a really smooth process. In fact, we were very fortunate that we had no positive tests and that's pretty remarkable," Veatch said in a video released by the University of Memphis. As a result, Veatch said that phase zero of the athletic department's return-to-campus plan was a success and that phase one will begin early next week. In phase one, the football team will be allowed to hold voluntary workouts with 10 people or less.

When the athletic department initially announced its phased return plan last month, the school stated that the men's and women's basketball programs would begin their phase zero once the football team progresses to phase one. There will be a daily screening process for the football program moving forward and players and staff will be required to masks while at athletic department facilities. Veatch said that if a player or staff member were to test positive for COVID-19, they would immediately be placed into quarantine and a contact tracing process would be enacted. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Some Memphis sports programs will be allowed to convene beginning June 1. The NCAA Division I council voted Wednesday to approve voluntary athletic activities for football, men's basketball and women's basketball, beginning next month, the NCAA confirmed. A moratorium on such activities is due to expire May 31 after being stopped in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. "We are pleased that the NCAA has approved voluntary activities in football, men's and women's basketball starting in June and we have been preparing for that possibility for some time now.," Memphis athletics director Laird Veatch said. "We look forward to sharing more in the near future once our plan is complete." The move represents a step toward college football taking place in the fall. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

In the week leading up to the Cotton Bowl, Brady White was focused on Memphis beating Penn State but also pondered if that would be his last game. When White announced on Jan. 8 that he was returning for his senior year, it became the first win of coach Ryan Silverfield's tenure. After a strong second season as the Tigers' quarterback, he wanted one more year to build on what he accomplished. Now that has changed with how the coronavirus pandemic has affected the world. Instead of preparing for the Tigers' spring game on Friday, White has stayed indoors in Memphis as he works out and studies his playbook. For now, that senior season is still in play. Until a decision comes on when the team will practice again, White is staying optimistic while also keeping aware of what's happening around him.

"I just knew I had an awesome opportunity to come back to. I was just excited about what we could possibly do, what I could do for myself and for this team coming back for my last year," White said. "I wanted us to maximize the opportunity and also building on what I've done here going into my next step." White, along with running back Kenneth Gainwell and wide receiver Damonte Coxie, were expected to keep the Tigers' offense running in high gear for Silverfield's first full season. Yet now, that remains an unknown with the college football season in limbo. For now, White is remaining positive and finding ways to occupy his time beside football. That includes cooking more than he usually does without sticking too tightly to his usual meal plan. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Brady White threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns as No. 17 Memphis beat 18th-ranked Cincinnati 34-24 Friday for the Tigers' third straight American Athletic Conference West title and the right to host the league championship - and the Bearcats again - next week. This will be the first time that Memphis (11-1, 7-1, No. 18 CFP) will host a conference title game in program history. And the league championship will be a rematch between these teams after Memphis snapped a nine-game winning streak by the East Division champs. Cincinnati (10-2, 7-1, No. 19 CFP) hadn't lost since being routed by Ohio State on Sept. 7.

Joseph Dorceus and Bryce Huff had two sacks apiece, and Memphis finished with five. The Tigers came up with three turnovers, including an interception by Sanchez Blake Jr. with 1:35 left. Memphis also forced Cincinnati three-and-out after Ahmad Gardner intercepted White with 7:49 left with the Tigers up only 27-24. The Tigers led only 20-17 when they put together their longest drive, going 83 yards over nine plays capped by a flea flicker. Patrick Taylor took the handoff, handed to Kedarian Jones who flipped the ball to White, and he hit Damonte Coxie for a 46-yard TD with 13:22 left. Antonio Gibson scored on a 29-yard TD run with 3:16 left for the final margin for Memphis. - AP College Football

One more win and No. 18 Memphis will get another crack at playing for the American Athletic Conference championship. The Tigers shrugged off a slow start to beat South Florida 49-10 Saturday and move a step closer to another AAC West division crown and a third consecutive berth in the league title game. Memphis (10-1, 6-1), which has won five straight since their only loss at Temple, retained a share of first place with Navy and will win the West with a home win over No. 17 Cincinnati next week. "I have yet to use the word championship at all this year, not since January," coach Mike Norvell said. "I got to say it in that locker room because we put ourselves in a position now if we can go to take care of our business next week, which is going to be an unbelievable challenge."

Brady White threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns, and the Tigers shrugged off two early turnovers to score 42 consecutive points to finish the blowout before an announced crowd of 25,136 that included a gray cat that ran onto the field after Antonio Gibson scored on an 18-yard run to make it 35-10 with just under seven minutes left in the third quarter. The ensuing kickoff was delayed less than a minute while the cat darted around, searching for an escape route. It finally took off through an open area behind the USF bench. White was intercepted twice in the first half when USF (4-7, 2-5) led 10-7. The graduate transfer settled in and took control of the game with help from a bevy of playmakers. - Memphis/AP College Football

Down early against Houston, there was no panic on the Memphis sideline. The Tigers remained poised because they knew they would respond. Brady White threw for 341 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another score and No. 18 Memphis overcame a 10-point first-quarter deficit to beat Houston 45-27 on Saturday. "It's the first quarter, so there's a lot of football left to be played," White said. "There was not one person who was down or frustrated. We knew what had to be done. We just came out the next series and responded. As long as we own the football and we execute the way we know how to, we know that we can't be stopped." White completed 22 of 33 passes.

"Brady is one the best quarterbacks in the country," Memphis coach Mike coach Mike Norvell said. "I believed in Brady throughout his time here in Memphis, and it's great to see him play with the confidence and playing within himself." Damonte Coxie caught four passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns, Antonio Gibson had four catches for 93 yards and a score, and Calvin Austin caught five passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.   Brady White threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns, Antonio Gibson had a school-record 386 all-purpose yards with three scores and No. 24 Memphis held off No. 15 SMU 54-48 Saturday night to cap the biggest day yet in Tigers' football history. The Tigers (8-1, 4-1) handed SMU its first loss of the season and moved atop the American Athletic Conference's Western Division to improve their case to represent the Group of Five in the New Year's Six. SMU (8-1, 4-1) came in with its best start to a season since winning 1982 when the Mustangs won their first 10 games. They left having lost their sixth straight in Memphis in a series dominated by the Tigers.

Memphis started the day on display thanks to ESPN's "College GameDay" on Beale Street with wrestler Jerry Lawler as the big guest, then filled the Liberty Bowl with 59,506 for the biggest crowd for an American conference game. The Tigers followed by outdueling the nation's sixth-best scoring offense, which had been averaging 43 points a game. The teams combined for 1,067 yards total offense, and SMU had its chance after scoring three TDs in the fourth quarter. Shane Buechele threw a 2-yard TD pass to James Proche with 2:06 left and went for 2 after each, converting all three. - Memphis/AP College Football

Gainwell is the first freshman in program history to top 200 yards rushing and needed only 14 carries - a 14.9 average - to do it. Memphis (5-0) built a 29-10 lead in the second quarter before Louisiana Monroe got back in it.   Memphis quarterback Brady White has two seasons of eligibility remaining, yet he already has earned his master's degree. White dismisses the notion he could have lightened his class schedule now that he's already graduated. White instead is beginning work on a doctorate in liberal studies at the same time that he's directing Memphis' offense. "I always wanted to push myself academically," White said. "My whole plan was that as long as I was in college and playing ball, I was going to go as far as I can with my education. I'm very fortunate to be at this level."

White hasn't pinpointed exactly what he wants to do once he's done playing football, though he's considered getting involved in the business side of sports. For now, he's focusing on making sure Memphis delivers on considerable preseason expectations as the Tigers prepare to host Mississippi on Saturday in their season opener. Memphis' offense is working under new coordinator Kevin Johns and attempting to replace Los Angeles Rams third-round draft pick Darrell Henderson, whose 1,909 yards rushing last season ranked second among all Football Bowl Subdivision players. The Tigers need a big year from White as they attempt to maintain their status as one of the nation's highest-scoring offenses. - AP College Football

The opener will also gauge how junior Brady White has progressed after his first year at quarterback. Riley Ferguson, the previous quarterback, improved his numbers in every category between his first and second seasons. White passed for 3,296 yards and 26 touchdowns with a 62.8 completion percentage. But finishing with six touchdowns and six interceptions in his final five games wasn't the best indicator that he improved from the beginning of the year.

"It's a lot of work in understanding and just the repetition of making sure their eyes are in the right place, that they're going through their reads and progressions at an elite level," Norvell said of how quarterbacks make the leap in their second year. "Sometimes that can be a challenge in Year 1." White has said he didn't think he had the best season because neither he nor the team maximized all four quarters in every game. But if Memphis is to contend for an AAC championship, they'll need a better year from White with playmakers Darrell Henderson and Tony Pollard now in the NFL. - Memphis Commercial Appeal
