As soon as the Outback Bowl ended Jan. 1, Rodney Smith went back to work. The former Gophers running back ended his six-year college career as the program's all-time leader in all-purpose yards. And despite grinding to those 5,441 yards, he didn't take a break or rest in the offseason. He had NFL dreams to pursue. But that hasn't been a straightforward process. First, he "got a little banged up" in that bowl game, meaning he couldn't compete in front of scouts at the East-West Shrine Bowl on Jan. 23. So he instead turned his focus to the NFL scouting combine at the end of February. But when no invite came, he again shifted attention, to the Gophers' March 25 pro day. Then the coronavirus pandemic shut everything down and, well … "It is definitely fru strating," Smith said.Smith, back home in Jonesboro, Ga., is trying to make the best of this non-ideal situation. He participated in a "virtual pro day" with Chip Smith, a trainer well-known in NFL circles, and afterward Rodney Smith's agent circu lated that video to teams. It included Smith doing everything but the bench press or jumping measurements because of his injury. "It was basically just like training. No adrenaline because you're not performing for anybody. It's basically just a workout, " Smith said. "But it was still an opportunity for me to show how I move, how fast I can run." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

No. 20 Minnesota won its first game as a ranked team in five years and suddenly it has the lead in the West Division and a clear path to the Big Ten title game. It all fell into place Saturday as Rodney Smith ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns and the Gophers improved to 7-0 for the first time since winning the national title in 1960 with a 42-7 victory over Rutgers on Saturday. Coupled with Illinois' stunning last-second victory over No. 6 Wisconsin, Minnesota (7-0, 4-0) has a one-game over the Badge rs (6-1, 3-1) in the division and control over its destiny. The path is not going to be easy. After facing Maryland (3-4) next weekend, the Gophers get a bye and then face No. 7 Penn State, No. 23 Iowa, Northwestern and Wisconsin in the regular-sea son finale. "They've been very mature during this whole process," Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck said. "It's my job to keep them grounded and focused. Today we're 1-0 in the Rutgers football championship. That's all that matters." Minnesota struggled against Rutgers in the first half before scoring four touchdowns in the second, including one by the defense. Smith scored on runs of 3 and 16 yards and Tanner Morgan threw two touchdowns as the Gophers won their ninth straight game spanning two seasons. Rutger s (1-6, 0-5) lost its fifth consecutive loss overall and 17th straight in the Big Ten Conference. The nine-game winning streak is the Gophers' longest since 1941-42. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Rodney Smith ran for 139 yards and a touchdown, helping Minnesota overpower Nebraska on a wintry Saturday night and stay undefeated with a 34-7 victory on the strength of 322 yards rushing. Shannon Brooks ran for 99 yards, Mo Ibrahim had 84 yards and thr ee touchdowns, and the Gophers (6-0, 3-0) stayed in a tie for first place in the Big Ten West Division with rival Wisconsin behind an all-around performance that had the Huskers (4-3, 2-2) on their heels all evening. With Nebraska quarterback Adrian Mart inez sidelined by a left knee injury, Noah Vedral took over for his first career start and was under pressure nearly every time he dropped back to pass. He went 14 for 23 for 135 yards and rushed 15 times for 49 yards, but the Gophers had four sacks and kept the Huskers from scoring until early in the fourth quarter.Standout freshman wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson left on a cart with an injury to his lower left leg in the second quarter, one of an endless string of setbacks for the Huskers. The Gophers, who turned down the thermostat in their indoor facility this week as low as it would go and repeatedly directed their skill position players to dip their hands in ice water between drills, were more than ready for the second-coldest October game in the 11-season history of TCF Bank Stadium. The kickoff temperature was 37 degrees with gusty wind and a rain-snow mix, the ideal scenario for turning their senior tailbacks Smith and Brooks loose. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Minnesota RB Rodney Smith ran for a career-high 211 yards against Illinois and is averaging 7.1 yards per carry the last two games. It's taken some time for the Gophers' ground game to get cranked up behind that big offensive line, and it might be needed on a cold and possibly wet night in Minneapolis. The Huskers are allowing 5.7 yards per carry the last three games. - AP College Football

Rodney Smith ran for a career-best 211 yards and a touchdown, Shannon Brooks added 111 rushing yards and a touchdown in his second game back from injury and Minnesota totaled 332 yards on the ground against Illinois in a 40-17 win on Saturday afternoon. Tanner Morgan was 9-of-17 passing for 155 yards and three touchdowns for the Gophers (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten), who have won seven straight games dating back to last season and rushed for more than 300 yards for the first time since tallying 409 yards against N ebraska in 2017. Minnesota's defense allowed just three points and held Illini running back Reggie Corbin, the third-leading rusher in the Big Ten, to 68 yards on 14 carries.Illinois (2-3, 0-2) scored two defensive touchdowns. Dele Harding returne d an interception of Morgan for a touchdown in the first quarter to give the Illini an early lead and Milo Eifler returned a fumble for another score in the third after Jake Hansen stripped Morgan on a sack. Illinois lost starting quarterback Brandon Pet ers in the first half after he hit the turf hard while being tackled. He walked off the field with assistance and was replaced by Matt Robinson, who was 15-of-29 passing for 125 yards. Smith helped the Gophers grab momentum in the second after a slow sta rt by both teams. He had a season-long 64-yard run to set up the Gophers first touchdown. Minnesota put together its best rushing game of the season as it gets healthier in the backfield with the return of Brooks, who had played just two games in the pas t two seasons because of knee injuries. - Minnesota/AP College Football

The Gophers' plans to expand the role of Rodney Smith last season were foiled when the standout running back suffered a season-ending knee injury in the second game. Those plans are now back in play. Head coach P.J. Fleck told WCCO-AM on Sunday he hopes to get Smith more involved in the passing game when the season starts Aug. 29 against South Dakota State at TCF Bank Stadium. "Rodney Smith has worked really hard in terms of not just the running back position, but he's also worked really hard at playing wide receiver," Fleck said on the radio." ...Last year he got hurt, so we weren't able to show it, but he can really do a lot of things in the slot." Smith tore his left anterior cruciate ligament after catching a screen pass on the opening drive of a 2 1-14 win over Fresno State last September. The Gophers are expected to field a stable of running backs who can contribute this fall. Minnesota will host a local media day Tuesday and hold its first closed practice Wednesday. The first open-to-the-pubic p ractice will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium. - Pioneer Press
