Though he's been surrounded by family and friends in Colorado, Alijah Halliburton has admittedly spent the better part of the past three weeks stuck inside the depths of his own head. Halliburton, the University of Wyoming's first team All-Mountain West safety, was hopeful he might hear his name called on the third day of the 2020 NFL draft in late April. Following a breakout senior season where he led all defensive backs nationally with a staggering 130 tackles and was named defensive MVP of the Arizon a Bowl, Halliburton felt he had a shot at being selected in the sixth or seventh rounds. At the very least, he thought he would sign fairly quickly with a club as an undrafted free agent. It's been 18 days since the draft came and went, and Halliburton i s still wondering what went wrong.Were his stats not as meaningful as he thought? Was playing in the MW being held against him? Could he have done anything differently during the season and in the pre-draft process? And, perhaps most importantly: Was football still in the cards for him? "It went the worst way it could possibly go for me," Halliburton told WyoSports. "I've been questioning everything really, what to do with my life. Should I just move on?" Halliburton is staying ready if that phon e call from the NFL comes, and he isn't expecting to be given a job. All he wants, he said, is a chance. And the fact he hasn't gotten one so far is what hurts the most. "I can't keep waiting for an opportunity," he said. With the proverbial chip on his shoulder firmly intact, Alijah Halliburton made the most of the biggest job interview of his life. The former University of Wyoming safety was one of 10 former Cowboys who participated in the school's Pro Day workout Tuesd ay morning. The workouts are for NFL scouts and personnel to observe players preparing for the 2020 NFL Draft, which begins April 23-25. A total of 23 NFL teams had representatives in attendance, according to a UW spokesman. A total of 13 former UW playe rs were on NFL rosters last season. At one end of the spectrum Tuesday stood Logan Wilson, the All-American linebacker from Casper, who has shot up draft boards since his NFL Combine workout in late February. Wilson is widely projected to be drafted in t he middle rounds of the upcoming draft.On the other end was Halliburton, a 2019 first team All-Mountain West selection that did not earn a combine invite or any postseason all-star game invitations. "To be honest with you, (the toughest part of th is process has been) making sure I'm staying calm. Anything can happen. Maybe I might slip or something, just making sure that I go 100% even if I slip, still finish the line, don't get frustrated. Just be there mentally and just keep on working. "I defi nitely want to get drafted. Everyone wants to get drafted...I have high expectations for myself, I always have. 2019 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DB - Alijah Halliburton, Sr., Wyoming,...Halliburton ranks No. 2 in the MW and No. 11 in the nation in total tackles, averaging 9.9 per game (119 total tackles)...The strong safety also ranks No. 3 in the MW a nd No. 20 in the nation in solo tackles per game, averaging 5.3 solo tackles per game (59 solo tackles)...Halliburton was named the Bronko Nagurski Trophy National Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in a 37-31 win over Missouri.
