When Antoine Winfield Jr. was tackling Auburn players to the turf at Raymond James Stadium almost four months ago, little did he know it was a premonition of his near future. The former Gophers safety went in the second round (45th overall) of the NFL dr aft Friday to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, becoming his alma mater's highest draft pick since Ra'Shede Hageman went 37th in 2014. The 21-year-old Winfield played his last collegiate game in Tampa in the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day, a dominant win against an SEC powerhouse. Shortly after, the fourth-year sophomore decided to forgo his final two years of eligibility to declare for the draft.Now he joins a Buccaneers team that's a threat for a deep postseason run after a series of recent moves, incl uding acquiring six-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Tom Brady and three-time Super Bowl champion tight end Rob Gronkowski. "That means everything," Winfield said of Tampa Bay's deep talent pool. "I was actually just talking to my dad about that, jus t talking about the players they had. I'm just ready to be that additional piece to help them win a Super Bowl this year. So I'm just extremely excited." Winfield celebrated his drafting at his father's house in The Woodlands, Texas. His father, Antoine Winfield Sr., is a former Vikings players and also the same age as his son's new QB. It's been 14 years since the University of Minnesota has had a player selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Antoine Winfield Jr. would like to change that on Thursday. Some draft analysts project the safety to go in the opening round of the April 23-25 draft. Many other analysts project him to be a second-round selection. The last Gophers player to go in the first round was running back Laurence Mulroney, at No. 21, to New England in 2006. Since then, they've had two second-round selections - de fensive tackle Ra'Shede Hageman (No. 37 overall by Atlanta in 2014) and tight end Maxx Williams (No. 55 by Baltimore in 2015). "That would be incredible, just to go in the first round in general," Winfield Jr. said. "It would mean everything just from th e hard work that I put in and especially for Gopher football because there's going to be some more players coming in right behind me."Winfield's father, cornerback Antoine Winfield Sr., was drafted No. 23 in the first round in 1999 by Buffalo and later played for the Vikings from 2004-12. Let his son explain why he, too, should be selected in the first round. "Because I'm a versatile player," he said. "You can play me anywhere on the back end of the defense. I can blitz, I tackle well. I can play in the post. I can cover slots and tight ends. I create takeaways. … I'm just a great overall player and can affect the game in any way." Last season, Winfield affected games in many different ways, finishing with seven interceptions, fourth in the na tion, two forced fumbles and three sacks. Gophers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. announced Wednesday he will leave college early for the NFL Draft. The redshirt sophomore had two years of eligibility remaining at Minnesota, but after overcoming two injury-shortened seasons to be unanimous All-Ameri can in 2019, Winfield said he has nothing left to prove in the college ranks. Antoine Winfield Sr. despite being 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, was a three-time Pro Bowl cornerback in a 14-year career with the Vikings and Buffalo Bills from 1999-2012.At Ohio State, Winfield Sr. was a consensus All-American, won the Jim Thorpe Award for best defensive back in 1998 and was drafted by the Bills in the first round. Winfield Jr., who is 5-10 and 205 pounds, was named the Big Ten’s defensive back of the ye ar and was a finalist for the Bronko Naguarski Award, given to the best defensive player in the country. He led Minnesota in two key categories: 88 total tackles and seven interceptions, while contributing three sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass break up. Winfield Jr., who spent part of his childhood in Eden Prairie, came to Minnesota from The Woodlands, Texas, in 2016. He was a freshman All-American that season. - The Pioneer Press

Oregon State quarterback Jake Luton, Minnesota defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr., and Kentucky linebacker Josh Paschal are among the major college football finalists for the Comeback Player of the Year award. The other finalists in FBS are Georgia Sout hern offensive lineman Drew Wilson and Notre Dame cornerback Shaun Crawford. The winner of the Comeback Player of the Year, which is sponsored by the Mayo Clinic, is determined by a vote of AP college football poll voters, along with input from sports in formation directors. It will be announced Thursday. There will also be a winner chosen among non-Division I players. Winners will be honored at the Fiesta Bowl between No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Clemson in Glendale, Arizona on Dec. 28. Luton and Winfield have both had multiple seasons interrupted or ended early by injuries. Winfield has bounced back to be an All-American and help the Gophers to a 10-2 season. Luton threw 28 touchdown passes and only three interceptions this season for Oregon State. Antoine Winfield Jr. spoiled Fresno State's bid for a Power 5 win for a second straight year. Winfield intercepted a pass in the end zone in the second overtime to preserve Minnesota's 38-35 come-from-behind victory over Fresno State on Saturday night wi th his second game-sealing interception in as many years against the Bulldogs. "It was very similar. It was like deja vu. I remember seeing the quarterback throw the ball again and I was able to make a quick speed turn and I was able to make the play," W infield said. "I'm sure they probably hate me right now."The Golden Gophers (2-0) tied the game twice late with Tanner Morgan throwing a 20-yard TD pass to Chris Autman-Bell on fourth down in the final minute of regulation and Morgan then scoring on a 4-yard keeper in the first overtime. Michael Lantz then made a 37-yard field goal for the Gophers on the opening possession of the second overtime before Winfield intercepted Jorge Reyna's pass to Cam Sutton to send Fresno State (0-2) to the loss. " When that ball was floating in the air, I saw (Winfield) breaking on it and we all knew what was going to happen," Morgan said. "He's a big-time player and he made a big-time play in a big-time situation."
