Ihmir Smith-Marsette scored on a 6-yard run, a 98-yard kickoff return and a 12-yard reception - all in the second quarter - to lead No. 19 Iowa to a 49-24 victory over No. 22 Southern California in the Holiday Bowl on Friday night. Senior Nate Stanley threw two touchdown passes and the Hawkeyes (10-3) won their fourth straight game for their sixth 10-win season in coach Kirk Ferentz's 21 years. USC freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis, who threw two touchdown passes, was knocked out of the game with an apparent arm injury early in the third quarter. The Trojans (8-5) had their three-game winning streak snapped. They fell apart after Slovis left.

Smith-Marsette helped the Hawkeyes to a 28-17 halftime lead. Smith-Marsette scored on a 6-yard sweep for a 14-7 lead. After USC tied it on Slovis' 16-yard pass to Vavae Malepeai, Smith-Marsette returned the kickoff 98 yards to give the Hawkeyes the lead for good. Smith-Marsette, a junior wide receiver, also had a 95-yard kickoff return for a score in the regular-season finale, a 27-24 victory over Nebraska. Stanley found Smith-Marsette on a 12-yard scoring pass on Iowa's next possession for a 28-14 lead. Chase McGrath kicked a 32-yard field goal as the clock expired to pull USC to 28-17 at halftime. - AP College Football

Nate Stanley threw for 308 yards and Keith Duncan kicked four field goals to set a new Big Ten single-season mark as No. 19 Iowa shut down Illinois, 19-10, on Saturday. The Hawkeyes also forced three turnovers against the team that came into the game leading the nation in turnover margin. But quarterback Brandon Peters was intercepted twice and lost a fourth-quarter fumble as the Fighting Illini (6-5, 4-4 Big Ten) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. Iowa (8-3, 5-3) held Illinois to its lowest point total of the season, a week after doing the same thing to Minnesota.

Illinois had 198 rushing yards and held the Hawkeyes to just 79 rushing yards on 32 carries. The Illini, who had outscored opponents 79-22 in the second half in their streak coming, got into Iowa territory on three consecutive possessions in the second half, but only got a field goal. Iowa opened the game with a touchdown for the second consecutive week when Tyler Goodson scored on a 2-yard run for a 7-0 lead. Illinois tied the game when Peters threw a 31-yard pass to Donny Navarro later in the first quarter. From that point, it was all field goals. Duncan had field goals of 23, 45, 24 and 29 yards to make it 27 this season for the conference record. Illinois' James McCourt kicked a 28-yarder in the fourth quarter. - Iowa/AP College Football

Minnesota's undefeated season came to an end in a place where the Gophers have struggled for a while. Nate Stanley threw two touchdown passes and Tyler Goodson ran for a score to help No. 23 Iowa beat No. 7 Minnesota 23-19 on Saturday, handing the Gophers their first loss while hurting their playoff prospects. The Gophers (9-1, 6-1, No. 8 CFP) haven't won at Kinnick Stadium since 1999, losing nine straight on the road in the series. The loss will hurt them in the rankings, but they stay in control of their own fate in the Big Ten West Division race. That, coach P.J. Fleck said, is something his team needs to remember.

"This is one game," Fleck said. "Everything else is sitting right in front of us" If we can play a game that poorly, we can come back from it. "This is not the end of the world. It hurts" It should hurt - it's a rivalry game. This is what college football is all about...This is one game. That's all that means." The Hawkeyes (7-3, 4-3) struck quickly, scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions, then held off Minnesota.s charge in the second half for their first victory over a ranked opponent this season. Stanley threw for 173 yards. Goodson rushed for 94 yards. - Iowa/AP College Football

Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley had 179 yards passing with a touchdown and the defense allowed just 202 yards of total offense, lifting the 20th-ranked Hawkeyes to a 20-0 shutout of Northwestern on Saturday. Mekhi Sargent had a rushing touchdown and Tyler Goodson added 58 yards rushing on 11 carries as Iowa (6-2, 3-2 in the Big Ten) won its second straight. Quarterback Aidan Smith completed 18 of 32 passes for 138 yards with an interception for Northwestern (1-6, 0-5), which dropped its fifth straight. Iowa entered the game fifth in the nation in scoring defense (11.6 points) and 10th in total defense (275 yards per game). Northwestern's deepest advance into Iowa territory was the 28-yard line late in the third quarter.

With his TD pass, Stanley has 62 in his career and moved into second place on Iowa's all-time list. He entered tied with Drew Tate at 61. Chuck Long heads the list with 74. Iowa took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 50-yard TD pass from Stanley to wide receiver Tyrone Tracy. He caught the ball at about the 30 over the middle, broke a tackle with a spin move and raced down the sideline into the end zone. Keith Duncan hit a 40-yard field goal early in the second quarter for a 10-0 halftime lead. The Hawkeyes stretched the lead to 17-0 on a 1-yard run by Sargent with 5:23 left in the third. Duncan added a 28-yard field goal early in the fourth to close out the scoring. - AP College Football

Nate Stanley threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns, Toren Young added a career-high 131 yards rushing and 14th-ranked Iowa throttled Middle Tennessee 48-3 on Saturday, moving to 4-0 for just the second time in 10 years. Brandon Smith caught both of Stanley's TD throws for the Hawkeyes. Iowa gained 644 yards, its most in coach Kirk Ferentz's 21 seasons in charge.

Iowa racked up 358 of those yards in the first half and scored on its first four drives, a stretch headlined by an 18-yard TD throw from Stanley to Smith, to jump ahead 24-0 midway through the second quarter. Ihmir Smith-Marsette's 14-yard touchdown run off a jet sweep pushed Iowa's lead to 34-3 with 2:19 left in the third quarter. Asher O'Hara was 15 of 22 passing for 110 yards for Middle Tennessee (1-3). The Blue Raiders' defense was gashed for over eight yards a play. - Iowa/AP College Football

Nate Stanley threw for 201 yards and ran for a score, and No. 19 Iowa made a big fourth-down stop late in the game, allowing the Hawkeyes to beat Iowa State 18-17 on Saturday night for their fifth straight win over the Cyclones. Keith Duncan kicked four field goals for the Hawkeyes (3-0, 1-0 Big Ten), who also improved to 4-0 against Iowa State coach Matt Campbell in a game delayed nearly 3 hours because of lightning.

Trailing 18-17 in the closing minutes, Iowa State drove to the Iowa 34 before a false start, a slip by quarterback Brock Purdy and an incompletion brought up fourth-and-13. The Cyclones went for it and, after offsetting penalties led to a do-over, Purdy overthrew Deshaunte Jones near the end zone. The Cyclones appeared to get another chance when they forced a quick Iowa punt. But the ball hit Datrone Young in the back and Iowa's Devonte Young recovered it, sealing the win for the Hawkeyes. Iowa State (1-1) opened the scoring on a 51-yard double pass from Purdy to Jones - a converted prep quarterback - to La'Michael Pettway midway through the first quarter. The Cyclones then moved ahead 14-6 just 57 seconds into the second half on a 73-yard strike from Purdy to Tarique Milton, who breezed past Iowa's banged-up secondary. Iowa's defense stiffened, and Stanley's 1-yard touchdown plunge gave the Hawkeyes a 15-14 lead with 12:10 left. - Iowa/AP College Football

Iowa made Rutgers' first trip to Iowa City as miserable as possible. Senior Nate Stanley had 236 yards passing and three touchdowns and No. 20 Iowa rolled past Rutgers 30-0 Saturday in its Big Ten opener, notching its third shutout in its last seven league games. The Hawkeyes look like they're ready for a visit to No. 25 Iowa State next week in a much-hyped rivalry. New Jersey native Ihmir Smith-Marsette caught two TD passes for the Hawkeyes (2-0, 1-0 Big Ten), who've allowed just 14 points through two games. "I thought it was really decisive performance," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. "It was hard-earned out there."

Stanley found Smith-Marsette and Tyrone Tracy for first-half touchdowns to help Iowa take a 20-0 lead at the break. Stanley then connected with Smith-Marsette from 23 yards out to make it 27-0. Smith-Marsette finished with 113 yards receiving. Stanley had at least three TD passes for the 10th time with the Hawkeyes. Iowa is 10-0 in those games. "I feel very poised, and my teammates have my back no matter what," Stanley said. - AP College Football

  08/27/19 - QB Nate StanleySr/2020, Iowa, 6-4, 235 (DS#9 QB) + More +

Iowa's Nate Stanley will enter his senior season with a chance at becoming one of the greatest quarterbacks in school history. Stanley is content to focus on winning and letting his legacy take care of itself. Stanley threw for 52 touchdowns in his first two seasons as a starter, the best two-year stretch for a Hawkeye, and he's just 23 TD passes away from passing Heisman Trophy runner-up Chuck Long for the top spot. Stanley is also within striking distance of Drew Tate for second in career passing yards — all with a 3.25-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio that's only been topped by another Heisman finalist, Brad Banks.

Stanley will make his 27th straight start on Saturday when the 20th-ranked Hawkeyes host Miami (Ohio). "I just want to win...whether that means we run for 400 yards or pass for 400 yards, I don't really care," Stanley said. "The job of the quarterback is to help the team win. No matter how that happens, a win is a win." Stanley has done plenty of that, winning 17 games while tossing five TDs in wins over Ohio State and Iowa State along with a six-touchdown effort in last year's win at Minnesota. Still, Stanley has been viewed more as a solid starter than a star despite a sturdy 6-foot-4, 245-pound frame, a potent arm and the ability to both take hits in the pocket and improvise when necessary. Part of that is because Stanley's accuracy can waver, to the point where he has yet to complete over 60% of his passes in a season. - AP College Football
