The word "adversity" gets thrown around a lot in NFL circles, especially this time of year. Teams want to know whether a draft prospect will stick with things when times get rough. Will he be a unifying force and positive impact on the locker room who helps turn around a losing streak? Or will he point fingers, shift blame and add to the problems? But adversity in the NFL - as important as it is on game day - is trivial. Yetur Gross-Matos has experienced some of the worst of the real-life version, and it motivates the former Penn State star.

When he was 2 years old, Gross-Matos fell into the water during a boating trip, and his biological father died in the act of saving him. Nearly nine years later, his older brother Chelal also died when he was struck by lightning on a baseball field. Teams looking for what Gross-Matos is made of can find all the information they need in his reaction to those two tragedies. "They just asked me about what's the hardest thing I ever went through," he said during last month's NFL Scouting Combine. "Obviously, for me, that was losing my older brother at a young age. And my dad. Just dealing with that. "I want to do something better for my family and my mother, and that's kind of how I approached it. That's the reality of it." - Herald Bulletin

The novel coronavirus has brought the sports world to a halt in the past two weeks. The NCAA canceled its winter championships, the NBA and NHL suspended their seasons, and MLB pushed back the start to its 2020 season. The NFL, however, has trudged forward. Free agency began last week and the 2020 NFL Draft is still slated to take place April 23-25, even though pro days and visits to team offices have been canceled for incoming prospects.

The lack of preparation and opportunity for college players who are pursuing their dreams are part of the reason Penn State head coach James Franklin wants the draft to be pushed back. "I've had a lot of (general managers) calling me about the draft," Franklin said in a teleconference Wednesday afternoon. "Our guys are not able to have a pro day...That's the thing that I would say has probably been challenging and concerning. I wish the NFL would push the draft back to take pressure off all these players, to take pressure off these universities and agents...so (the players) still have the best chance to be evaluated." - Centre Times

Penn State will be losing one lineman early to the NFL but keeping another. A few hours after center Michal Menet announced that he will be returning to the Nittany Lions for his senior season in 2020, defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos said he will be leaving. Menet is a redshirt junior. Gross-Matos is a true junior - and a potential first-round NFL Draft choice in the spring. "After careful consideration, countless discussions with my coaches, family, and other advisors, I have decided to forego my final year of eligibility," Gross-Matos wrote in a a message posted on Twitter. "Even though I am leaving, I have promised my family and Coach Franklin that I will continue to pursue my Penn State degree." - Penn Live

Penn State DE Yetur Gross-Matos was a second-team preseason AP All-American and is a possible first-round draft pick. But he hasn't been the force coming off the edge that the Nittany Lions need him to be in recent weeks. He has one sack over his last five games, and the last two weeks Penn State has been burned for more than 300 yards passing by both No. 11 Minnesota and Indiana. - AP College Football

Penn State's Yetur Gross-Matos, a potential top-10 NFL draft pick, missed the entire summer due to a suspension - but James Franklin said Saturday he still expects big things out of the defensive end. "He's a mature guy," the head coach said. "He's had a great summer, from what I see. He looked great (Friday). I know he's appreciative of being back. I think he's going to have a really big year for us; as the year went on last year, he really kind of separated himself into one of the elite ends of college football."

Gross-Matos finished with 20 tackles for loss last season, becoming the 11th Nittany Lion to ever hit that milestone. (Not too bad for a first-year starter.) But, following the spring, he and running back Journey Brown were suspended this summer due to a violation of team rules. Per Franklin, their suspensions ended Thursday. Camp opened Friday. "We're very pleased with him and his development, and his appreciation for being at Penn State and his appreciation for being a part of our football program, and his attitude and approach," Franklin said, referring to Gross-Matos. - Centre Times

Penn State defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos, a projected first-round NFL draft pick in 2020, and running back Journey Brown were suspended for the summer but will return to the team in time for camp next month, according to head coach James Franklin. Franklin was mum Friday on specific details - such as exactly why the two were suspended - and the coach would only say at Big Ten media days that their suspensions were the results of a violation of team rules. When asked exactly about Gross-Matos, Franklin simply said, "Yetur was suspended from the team for a violation of team rules at the end of spring for the summer, and we’re expecting him back Aug. 1." - Centre Daily
