Andrew Thomas joined some household NFL names from Georgia Thursday night when he became a top five draft pick in appropriately a stay-at-home event. The New York Giants selected him with the No. 4 overall pick, making Thomas just the third former Bulldo g in more than 25 years to go that early. The others: quarterback Matthew Stafford at No. 1 in 2009 and wide receiver A.J. Green at No. 4 in 2011. "I was excited to get the call," Thomas, who had two Zoom calls with the Giants and a formal interview at t he NFL combine, told reporters. "It finally came like three minutes before the pick. I just thank God for the blessing." The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Thomas is the highest drafted Bulldog offensive lineman to go in the draft ever. "He put the work in, put the time to get to this point," Chris Slade, who coached Thomas at Pace Academy in Atlanta, said before the draft."I can't think of anybody else more deserving than he and his family. I'm as excited for him almost like it was me on my draft day becau se I know how hard he's worked, how far he's come and how much this is going to mean to his family." Thomas is in line for a 4-year, $32.3 million contract with a $21 million signing bonus, according to Spotrac. Thomas went higher than most projected but there was buzz leading up to the draft that his stock could be rising again. "Andrew certainly has a hell of a pedigree, a three-year starter in the Southeast Conference," Giants general manager Dave Gettleman told reporters. "He's played against some r eal quality defensive ends during his college career. He has played big time ball in front of a lot of people." - Athens Daily Banner

Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman added two more first rounders to his resume Thursday. Georgia offensive linemen Andrew Thomas (fourth overall, New York Giants) and Isaiah Wilson (29th overall, Tennessee Titans) were drafted during the first round of the NFL Draft. Pittman was the position coach for Thomas and Wilson the past three seasons at Georgia. Thomas won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the SEC's best offensive lineman in 2019.Pittman has coached seven first-round linemen for at least one season, including six since 2013. Pittman has had 14 former linemen drafted during that time. Other first rounders who were coached by Pittman include Arkansas' Frank Ragnow and Georgia's Isaiah Wynn in 2018; Tennessee's Ju'Wuan James in 2014; North Car olina's Jonathan Cooper in 2013; and Oklahoma's Stockar McDougle in 2000. Thomas, Wilson, Ragnow, Cooper and McDougle were recruited by Pittman, but prior to Thursday he had never coached a first-round lineman for his entire college career. - Northwest A rkansas Times

Before the first Sam Pittman-coached Georgia player was drafted two years ago, the offensive line coach called Isaiah Wynn to make sure it was OK if he went to be with another player he helped develop on draft night. Frank Ragnow lost his father Jon to a heart attack during his junior season at Arkansas. Pittman coached Ragnow before joining Kirby Smart's Bulldog staff in 2016, and the center asked if Pittman and his wife Jamie would come to Victoria, Minn., for his big moment. "Coach, with that kind of request, I'll be fine, I'll call you," Wynn told Pittman. Ragnow went with the No. 20 overall pick in 2018 and Wynn, the Georgia offensive tackle, went soon after at No. 23. "Right before (Wynn's) pick he texted me and I was sitting outside with Frank a fter he had been drafted and said, 'Oh man, we've got to get back in there on the TV.' It was really a neat deal," said Pittman, who returned to Arkansas in December to become head coach after four Georgia seasons.Pittman should see another couple of players he recruited and coached go early in the NFL draft Thursday and three players taken before the draft wraps up Saturday. Left tackle Andrew Thomas is considered a top-15 prospect and right tackle Isaiah Wilson is seen as a riser who could find himself move into the first round as well. Guard Solomon Kindley is viewed as a third-day pick. Thomas will be the sixth Pittman-coached player to become a first rounder and Wilson could be the seventh. - Athens Daily Banner
