It didn't take long for Arizona State's Brandon Aiyuk to jump on social media after hearing his name called late in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday. The first message the 6-foot wide receiver sent out was a photo himself as a smiling 4-year- old dressed in a maroon San Francisco 49ers sweatshirt. Sometimes things just work out. It was indeed the 49ers that selected him with the 25th pick in the first round.Aiyuk watched the virtual draft with his family at their Reno, Nevada home. "My mom's been a huge 49ers fan her whole life, so that kind of bled on me a little bit when I was younger," Aiyuk said in a press conference call with the media shortly after the selection. "There were a lot of people telling me before today and all week t hat it was going to happen. So it's crazy that it actually did happen." Aiyuk became the 252nd Sun Devil to be selected in the professional draft. His 25th overall selection was the highest for an ASU player since defensive end Terrell Suggs went 10th ov erall to the Ravens in 2003. - Arizona Republic

Brandon Aiyuk had a breakout season for the Arizona State Sun Devils in 2019, emerging as the team's most potent big-play threat. It paid off as the 6-foot, 205-pound wide receiver was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers with the 25th pick of the first rou nd. He is the 26th player selected out of ASU in the NFL's first round. This also makes the second straight season in which a Sun Devil wide receiver has been chosen in the opening round, with N'Keal Harry going to the New England Patriots with the 32nd and final pick of the first round a year ago. Draft festivities had been scheduled for Las Vegas but the coronavirus pandemic resulted in those plans being scrapped. Commissioner Roger Goodell made he announcement of each team's selection from his baseme nt with team officials in separate locations as well.Aiyuk was the sixth receiver chosen in a draft that is deep at that position. He was the third Pac-12 player chosen, following Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert (Chargers) and USC offensive tack le Austin Jackson (Dolphins) who went sixth and 18th, respectively. Aiyuk, who watched festivities with his family in Reno, Nevada, played only two years for the Sun Devils, arriving in 2018 after playing two years at Sierra Community College. In 25 game s at ASU, he recorded 98 catches for 1,666 yards and 11 touchdowns. - Arizona Republic

When the NFL draft gets underway Thursday night, Arizona State wide receiver and kick return specialist Brandon Aiyuk could be the first player with local ties to hear his name called. Aiyuk is projected to be a late-first or early-second round selectio n. He was one of four Sun Devils that went to the NFL combine in Indianapolis in February, with the others being running back Eno Benjamin, center Cohl Cabral and punter MIchael Turk. The University of Arizona has two prospects who could hear their names called, most likely on the final day in quarterback Khalil Tate and running back J.J. Taylor.Another player to look for is junior offensive tackle Austin Jackson out of USC and North Canyon High School, who is slotted as a first-round selection i n most projections. While the rite of spring is taking place much of the lead up has been different. There were few private workouts before the mass shutdown due to the coronavirus. Many colleges canceled their pro days during which NFL scouts traverse t he country, getting a first-hand look at prospects taking part in a number of drills. ASU and Arizona were among the schools that had to cancel that event. - Arizona Republic

Three players who had 400 yards in receptions or more return in seniors Brandon Aiyuk and Kyle Williams and junior Frank Darby. All expect Aiyuk to inherit the lead role. The transfer from Sierra Community College in Northern California was playing well at the end of last season, setting himself up to take a starring role this year. He should be an impact performer on special teams, as well. Fisher is looking forward to seeing how Aiyuk embraces the challenge."He's a tremendously skilled player. The ceiling is high for him. I don't want to say he snuck up on people because he was highly thought out of junior college but we had N'Keal and everyone was looking at him," Fisher said. "It's different when you're the guy with the bullseye every week a nd he will be that guy this year. Life will get harder." Aiyuk bristles at the notion that he is going to be looked at as the lead performer of the group. "I don't think I have done anything special yet. I still think I have to prove myself," he said aft er Saturday's scrimmage wrapped a week at Camp Tontozona. "I'm just trying to work hard to be myself and hopefully good things will happen." - Arizona Republic
