*Noah Igbinoghene, Auburn, Player News
|
Auburn cornerback Noah Igbinoghene was one of three players who joined the Miami Dolphins as first-round selections in the NFL Draft on April 23. Igbinoghene never squared off against the player taken with the 18th choice by Miami, Southern Cal offensive tackle Austin Jackson, but he can vouch for the Dolphins' selection with the No. 5 pick, Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Igbinoghene lined up at cornerback against Tagovailoa in only one game, but in that contest, the Crimson Tide QB completed 25-of -32 passes for 324 yards, tied a school single-game record with five touchdown passes and set a school single-game mark for touchdown responsibility by also running for a score in Alabama's 52-21 victory on Nov. 23, 2018.After playing wide receive r the previous season, Igbinoghene finished second for Auburn with seven tackles in that game. He didn't get his chance to even the score against Tagovailoa last season. A hip injury kept the quarterback out of the 2019 Iron Bowl, which Auburn won 48-45 with Igbinoghene contributing five tackles and a pass breakup. "He didn't play this past year," Igbinoghene said, "but my 2018 year, my first year playing the position, so going against him my first time, I'm not going to lie, I was kind of nervous going into that Iron Bowl game. That was my first Iron Bowl ever playing the corner position. You can't even imagine how I felt. But I felt like I played a pretty good game. "He's a fantastic quarterback. Going to have a tremendous career, so I just can't wai t to get to work with him." - Birmingham News

When Miami Dolphins general manager called the former Auburn cornerback late Thursday night to deliver the news that the franchise was selecting him late in the first round of the NFL Draft, Igbinoghene couldn't find the words to articulate the feeling. Sitting in his Trussville home, surrounded by his family - his father, Festus, practically jumping with joy behind him - Igbinoghene could only slouch forward as Grier delivered the life-changing news. For as much confidence Igbinoghene had exuded on the field and throughout the pre-draft process - going so far as to assert at the NFL Combine that he was the best cornerback in this draft class - even he seemed surprised when the Dolphins, after trading back four spots late in the first round, selected h im with the 30th overall pick in the draft. After all, it was just two years ago that Igbinoghene made the switch from wide receiver to cornerback, and although his stock seemingly rose over the last few months, few envisioned him as a Day 1 prospect whe n he declared early following his junior season.Yet the Dolphins, who had three first-round picks on Thursday and used the first two on Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (fifth overall) and USC offensive tackle Austin Jackson (18th overall), felt they couldn't pass up on a prospect of Igbinoghene's caliber when they saw him sitting there late on Day 1. "Best player on the board for us," Grier said. "We felt really good about Noah. We got to know him. This is a passing league as everyone says. Yo u can never have enough corners … (head coach) Brian (Flores) came from a really good defensive team when we hired him, and they had a lot of corners. At the end of the day, the way this league is offensively, it's a premium position and the more you h ave, the better. It breeds competition. (He's a) competitive kid that we really liked in the process." - Birmingham News

After a trade down from the 26th pick in Thursday night's first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins further fortified the secondary with a supreme athlete in Noah Igbinoghene. The football star moonlighted in the long-jump and triple-jump eve nts on the Auburn track team. Auburn Defensive Backs Coach Wesley McGriff knew there was a possibility he wouldn't have Igbinoghene during spring practices. Two-sport athletes are given some leeway with regards to practice time during the overlap between two sports, a leash that Igbinoghene was not at all interested in exercising. "That kid's attitude is phenomenal," McGriff said. "You have to run him out of the building." "Noah came over and got 15 days of spring practice last year, then he's basically been a starting corner in the SEC from the start," said Defensive Coordinator Kevin Steele. "He played very well last year, but it was his first year on defense. A lot of it was all new to him, and he progressed each game." - MiamiDolphins.com

The NFL Draft will be different this year thanks to the coronavirus outbreak. While the draft will go on as planned, beginning April 23 and running for three days, it won't be the once-anticipated extravagant show it was expected to be in Las Vegas this year. So, instead of gathering the draft's top prospects in a green room in Las Vegas later this month, thanks to the restrictions on the size of gatherings as a result of COVID-19, the NFL is inviting some of those highly sought-after hopefuls to attend the event virtually. Among the 50 or so players who will be joining the virtual green room is former Auburn cornerback Noah Igbinoghene, who announced his invitation on Twitter on Wednesday. "Extremely honored and blessed to be one of the 50 selected to 'virtually' attend the NFL Draft," Igbinoghene posted. Igbinoghene is projected as an early-round selection in the upcoming draft after forgoing his final year of eligibility to declare for the NFL, and some draft analysts believe the one-time receiver- turned-defensive back could hear his name heard before the end of the first round on April 23. - Birmingham News

While Igbinoghene's tape in two short seasons has impressed, he did well in bolstering his stock at the NFL Combine and then earlier this month at Auburn's pro day, when he notably improved his vertical jump to 40 inches (from 37 at the Combine) and ran a 4.47 in the 40-yard dash (slightly quicker than his 4.48 in Indianapolis). Kiper has Igbinoghene projected to go late in the first round to the San Francisco 49ers with the 31st overall pick, though he added the defending Super Bowl champs, the Kansas City Chiefs, are also in the market for a cornerback and could be a prime landing spot for Igbinoghene in the draft. "It's a blessing, man," Igbinoghene said. "I've only been playing the position for two years. Who knows? It's crazy. If I had been playin g the position a little bit earlier, who knows what could've happened? It's a blessing, again. I ain't come here and plan to do this and play cornerback. It just shows God's plan for me, and so I'm very appreciative of Him and so I'm glad. I'm thankful f or Auburn." - Birmingham News

Auburn may have lost a third-round NFL Draft pick at cornerback this offseason, but at least one coach is confident the Tigers could be even better at the position this fall. Jamel Dean was drafted in the third round by the Tampa Bay Bucs this spring, le aving an open starting spot at corner for Auburn this offseason alongside Noah Igbinoghene. With veteran defensive back Javaris Davis, who started at nickel last season, moving back to the outside, Auburn defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson is confident in the Tigers' starting tandem at corner as fall camp quickly approaches. "I really do feel like we have the best duo of corners in the country in (Igbinoghene) and Javaris Davis," Woodson said Thursday before speaking to the Monroe County Auburn Club i n Monroeville. That's quite a statement from the Tigers' second-year defensive backs coach, especially when you consider that Igbinoghene has just one year of experience at the position following a switch from offense to defense last spring and Dav is played predominantly in the slot during the 2018 season. Still, Woodson feels great about the team's projected starters at corner. Woodson is particularly high on Igbinoghene - a player defensive coordinator Kevin Steele said possesses four key traits to be dominant at corner. As a sophomore last season, Igbinoghene led the team with 11 pass breakups, totaled 50 tackles, picked off one pass and had a forced fumble. While he had some ups and downs last season, as expected, Auburn's coaches were somewh at surprised by just how quickly Igbinoghene progressed after moving from receiver to cornerback last spring. - Birmingham News
