Appalachian State's Darrynton Evans became an NFL running back on Friday night. Evans, a Mountaineers star who turned pro following his junior season, was selected during the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. Evans was the 93rd o verall player taken. He is the highest draft pick for App State since Brian Quick was selected in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2012 draft. Evans will pair in the Titans backfield with Derrick Henry, the Titans' 6-foot-3 bruiser who ran for 1,54 0 yards last season. The New Smyrna Beach native was described by draft analysts as a change-of-pace back due to the 4.41 40-yard dash speed he displayed at the NFL Combine. - Winston-Salem Journal

Darrynton Evans, Appalachian State's star running back, has set his sights on the NFL. The redshirt junior announced on Wednesday that he will forgo his final collegiate season, declaring for the 2020 NFL Draft. Evans shared his decision on Twitter, doin g so on the four-year anniversary of the day he announced his commitment to the Mountaineers. Evans is coming off one of the best seasons for a running back at App State, closing a career that started with big plays in big moments. In 2019, Evans tied a Sun Belt record with 24 total touchdowns to go along with 1,480 rushing yards, the fourth-highest total in program history. He was named the Sun Belt Conference offensive player of the year. He also won the Sun Belt championship game for the second strai ght season on Dec. 7, when Evans scored all three of his touchdowns in the first quarter of a 45-38 victory. - The Winston-Salem Journal

Appalachian State running back Darrynton Evans turned a teammate's fourth-down fumble into a 31-yard touchdown. The Mountaineers added another fourth-down score when receiver Thomas Hennigan wrestled an under-thrown pass away from a UAB defensive back wh o tried to intercept it. Those kinds of plays lifted No. 20 Appalachian State to a 31-17 victory over the Blazers in the New Orleans Bowl on Saturday night. "We're not going to play scared at Appalachian State," newly promoted head coach Shawn Clark said . "We're going to play aggressive and let the cards fall where they fall." The Mountaineers (13-1) scored twice in the third quarter on quarterback fumbles. Evans, who rushed for a 157 yards, scored his lone touchdown when quarterback Zac Thomas lost the ball on a fourth-and-1 sneak. The ball rolled back toward Evans, who cleanly scooped it, made a sudden move to his right and sprinted into the open field. "It was just right place, right time," Evans said. Later, outside linebacker Nick Hampton stripped UAB quarterback Tyler Johnston, and inside linebacker Trey Cobb picked up the ball and returned it 24 yards to put Appalachian State in front 24-17. "There was more crazy things that happened in this game than 10 games combined," lamented UAB coach Bill Clark, calling the Appalachian State fumble that bounced straight back to Evans "pretty fluky." Darrynton Evans scored three touchdowns and 20th-ranked Appalachian State repeated as Sun Belt Conference champions with a 45-38 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday. Evans won the game's MVP for the second straight season. Zac Thomas threw for 1 49 yards and two touchdowns and Daetrich Harrington and Marcus Williams added touchdown runs. The Mountaineers racked up 416 yards on offense, including 267 on the ground in a dominating first half. When asked on the field what bowl he expects his team t o play in, first-year Mountaineers coach Eli Drinkwitz shouted to fans, "It better be the Cotton Bowl!" The Mountaineers have now won at least a share of four straight Sun Belt championships. This was the second year there was a championship game. Drinkwitz pulled a poker chip out of his pocket after the game and thanked his players, saying "we asked then to keep the chip all year long and be motivated to do something that has never been done before. And this group did it. Impressive." The Mountai neers (12-1, 8-1 Sun Belt) accomplished something North Carolina, Duke, North Carolina State and Wake Forest never have -- becoming the first FBS team from North Carolina to win 12 games in a season. Appalachian State defeated Lafayette 17-7 early this s eason on the road, but this one wasn't nearly as competitive. Darrynton Evans was recruited to Appalachian State as a slot receiver. He's carved out a pretty solid niche at tailback. Evans ran for 154 yards and three second-half touchdowns and No. 23 Appalachian State avoided another home upset with a big second ha lf to beat Texas State 35-13 on a rain-soaked Saturday. The victory, combined with Arkansas State's 38-33 win over Georgia Southern, guarantees the Mountaineers (10-1, 6-1 Sun Belt) a spot in the Sun Belt Conference championship game on Dec. 7 for the se cond straight season. Evans has eclipsed 1,150 yards rushing in each of the past two seasons and needs 14 yards to break into the top 10 in school history in rushing.Coach Eli Drinkwitz is glad the previous coaching staff made that move. "He's an elite tailback, obviously," Drinkwitz said. "To me, he's one of the most dynamic players in college football because of his speed and return ability, and we're very fortunate to have him. I've been blessed to be around some really good running backs. Fiv e of them have been drafted, and he's right there with all of them, for sure." Evans said he isn't surprised by his success because he played running back in high school. "At times I had other people who could play running back, so I would move to slot," said Evans, who was moved to tailback in 2016 after the Mountaineers sustained some injuries at that position. Darrynton Evans broke for an 87-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game and closed out the scoring when he returned an on-side kick 46 yards and the Mountaineers held on to get by Charlotte 56-41 on Saturday. Evans, who finished with 298 all-pur pose yards, charged through a huge hole in the line and ran untouched to put Appalachian State up 7-0. Evans, who had a 68-yard scoring romp in the fourth quarter, finished with a career-high 234 yards rushing on 19 carries with four touchdowns. Evans pl ucked the onside kick out of the air and raced untouched for the final score. Zac Thomas finished with 182 yards and three TDs passing.Shaun Jolly broke through to block a punt that D'Marco Jackson scooped up and returned 16 yards to give the Moun taineers a 28-13 lead late in the first half. Appalachian State took a 42-20 lead late in the third when Thomas hit Jalen Virgil in stride on a 73-yard scoring toss. Charlotte's Chris Reynolds, who threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns, found Victor Tu cker on a 23-yard scoring play to close to 42-34 before Evans sprinted 68 yards for the score and a 49-34 advantage.
