2019 ALL-SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): QB Chase Fourcade, Nicholls, Sr., Metairie, La.,...Fourcade was selected as the league's top offensive player after being the league's most efficient passer with a 151.3 rating while also ranking sevent h in the FCS with a 66.4 completion percentage. The reigning player of the year accounted for 273.4 yards of total offense per game and threw for 15 touchdowns while adding another 11 on the ground. Over his last three games, he averaged 318.7 yards pass ing while throwing for eight touchdowns. Fourcade played a key role in the Colonels' top rushing offense, ranking seventh in league games with 56.0 yards per game. Nine of his 11 rushing TDs were in Southland competition, which was fourth-best in the SLC . Chase Fourcade accounted for two TDs, Julien Gums ran for 172 yards and Nicholls beat North Dakota 24-6 Saturday in a first-round FCS playoff game. Gums, who went over 1,000 yards this season, led a rushing attack that gained 316. Dontrell Taylor added 9 5 yards rushing and a score. Dai'Jean Dixon had 122 yards receiving and a touchdown. Nicholls (9-4), which tied for first with Central Arkansas in the Southland Conference, won its sixth straight game and will play at No. 1 seed and defending champion No rth Dakota State next Saturday. Fourcade gave the Colonels a 10-0 lead late in the second quarter on 1-yard score, one play after Nate Ketteringham was strip-sacked by Sully Laich and Brandon Forntenot made the recovery. A second field goal by Brady Leac h closed the gap but Fourcade threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Dixon with 4:22 left in the third quarter and Taylor added a 2-yard TD late in the fourth. For the third straight year, the Nicholls State University football team will be hosting an opening round FCS playoff game as the Colonels welcome North Dakota to Manning Field at John L. Guidry Stadium for a 3 p.m. matchup on Saturday, Nov. 30. Nicholls (8-4) secured the Southland Conference's automatic berth after knocking off Southeastern Louisiana in the River Bell Classic Thursday night. It marked the second straight auto bid for the Colonels, who advanced to the second round last season. North Dak ota (7-4) earned an at-large berth after ending the year with back-to-back victories.Competing as an independent, the Fighting Hawks had wins over Southland member Sam Houston State, as well as national seed Montana State. Saturday's game will be the first meeting between the programs. The winner will advance to play at No. 1 North Dakota State next Saturday (Dec. 7). For consecutive seasons, Nicholls is one of three Southland programs to make the 24-team field, joined by league co-champion Centr al Arkansas (9-3) and Southeastern Louisiana (7-4). Chase Fourcade threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Dai'Jean Dixon with 1:30 left and Nicholls survived a wild finish Thursday night to beat Southeastern Louisiana 28-27, clinching a share of the Southland Conference title and a bid to the FCS playoffs. Nic holls (8-4, 7-2) got a break when Bryce Broussard missed a PAT attempt after SE Louisiana (7-4, 6-3) took a 27-21 lead with 2:21 left in the game. The Lions' Dominic Lamm intercepted Fourcade's pass with a leaping one-handed grab that set up Southeastern Louisiana at the Nicholls 29 with 3:07 left. Three plays later, Chason Virgil completed a 17-yard TD pass to Austin Mitchell that gave the Lions the lead. After Nicholls answered with a three-play, 75-yard drive that took only 45 seconds, Alec Bland tri ed a squib quick that bounced off a Lions player and was recovered in a scrum by the Lions at the SLU 44. With the benefit of roughing the passer and pass interference penalties, the Lions drove 55 yards to the Nicholls 2.On a second-and-goal Cole Kelley fumbled and Nicholls' Sully Laiche recovered with 21 seconds left. Nicholls ran the clock out on four plays to secure the win. Fourcade finished with 288 yards passing, three touchdowns and an interception. Dixon caught nine passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns, and Julien Gums ran 18 times for 133 yards and a score. Virgil passed for 321 yards, a touchdown and an interception for the Lions. Nicholls holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Central Arkansas (8-3, 6-2) for the FCS playoffs aut omatic bid. Chase Fourcade threw for 374 yards and three touchdown passes to lead Nicholls to a 34-20 victory over McNeese on Saturday. The win secured Nicholls (7-4, 6-2 Southland Conference) third consecutive seven-win season, a program first. It was also just the second win in the last 11 meetings against McNeese (6-5, 4-4). Fourcade completed 21 of 35 passes with scoring throws to Dai'Jean Dixon, Dion Ray and Jordan Talley. Dixon and Ray each had seven receptions and a 55-yard touchdown catch. Dixon finished wi th 185 yards receiving and Ray had 119. Talley had three receptions for 29 yards. Julien Gums added a touchdown run late in the fourth quarter that stretched the Colonels' lead to 34-14. It was Gums' 15th rushing touchdown of the season. Julien Gums ran for three touchdowns and Chase Fourcade passed for two in Nicholls State's 48-27 victory over Houston Baptist on Saturday. Fourcade hit David Robinson Jr. with a 38-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the second quarter and the Col onels (6-4, 5-2 Southland) took a 27-20 halftime lead. Nicholls added two touchdowns in the third quarter for a 41-20 lead and the Huskies (4-6, 1-5) were unable to rally. Gums carried 22 times for 104 yards. Fourcade was 17 of 23 for 294 yards. Bailey Z appe completed 26 of 41 passes for 246 yards and a touchdown for Houston Baptist. The Colonels climb into a first-place tie with Central Arkansas, Southeast Louisiana and Sam Houston State. Chase Fourcade passed for 188 yards and a touchdown and ran for 135 yards and two scores on Saturday, and Nicholls beat Northwestern State 45-35 to keep the Demons winless on the season. Fourcade's 10-yard TD pass to Julien Gums gave the Colonels (4-2, 3 -0 Southland Conference) a 31-7 lead early in the third quarter. Shelton Eppler threw touchdown passes to Quan Shorts and Gavin Landry in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 31-21, but the Demons (0-6, 0-3) could not get closer as the teams traded to uchdowns twice in the fourth quarter. Kendall Bussey ran eight times for 102 yards and Dontrell Taylor ran 14 times for 52 yards and three touchdowns for Nicholls. The Colonels outrushed the Demons 349-41. Nicholls (3-2, 2-0 Southland Conference) snapped an eight-game losing streak to Central Arkansas (3-2, 1- 1). Fourcade was 24-of-29 passing for 327 yards and a touchdown, and scored on a 1-yard run that capped a nine-play drive on the Colonels' opening series. Fourcade is now the seventh player in the Southland Conference to reach 10,000 career yards of tota l offense.Gums ran for 8-yard and 36-yard touchdowns in the second quarter that made it 20-0 at halftime. Fourcade's 26-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Talley stretched the lead to 27-7. Kendall Bussey added an 8-yard touchdown run early in the four th quarter. Chase Fourcade threw two touchdown passes and ran for two scores to guide Nicholls to a 42-35 victory over Prairie View A&M on Saturday. Fourcade completed 17 of 22 passes for 224 yards for the Colonels (1-1), ranked 11th in the FCS coaches' poll, and ad ded 35 yards rushing on 12 carries. Nicholls took the lead midway through the first quarter on Dion Ray's 15-yard TD run, but Gavin Lasseigne missed the extra point and the lead stood at 6-0 at quarter's end. The second quarter was dominated by the Panth ers (1-2), who used Jalen Morton's 23-yard scoring run and two Morton TD throws - 16 yards to Tony Mullins and a 39-yarder to Kalen Riles for a 21-6 halftime lead.But the Colonels took control of the game with a 29-point third quarter. Fourcade op ened the scoring with a 5-yard TD run. Fourcade then connected with Dal'Jean Dixon for a 14-yard score before added a 3-yard TD run to put Nicholls on top 28-21. On the ensuing possession for the Panthers, Morton fumbled on first down and Allen Pittman r ecovered the ball for Nicholls at the Prairie View 36-yard line. The 2019 Southland Conference Football Preseason All-Conference Teams were announced on Thursday, with defending co-champion Nicholls leading the league with 11 total selections. Led by senior quarterback Chase Fourcade and senior defensive lineman Sully Laiche, the Colonels accounted for eight of the 28 first-team slots. Fourcade, the 2018 Southland Conference Player of the Year, enters his final season with the 10th-most career total offense yards in league history (8,990), and Laiche begins his senio r campaign as the active FCS leader in career sacks (25.5).Central Arkansas earned the second-most selections with seven, followed by six each for Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana. The Bears' secondary placed three on the all-league te ams with Juan Jackson earning first-team honors after leading the team with 91 tackles in 2018.
