Patrick Taylor Jr., Memphis, Player News

As gyms close around Memphis to limit the spread of the coronavirus, Antonio Gibson is on a daily mission: Find a place to work out for the NFL Draft. Some days, it's the Memphis practice field at the Billy J. Murphy Complex. This week, it was Tom Lee Park where the former Tigers wide receiver found a sand pit and worked out with teammates. "When I was younger, we always played in the backyard or the streets," Gibson said. "It was easier than this because it's more complicated. You just have to adapt." This is life now for Gibson and his former Memphis teammate Patrick Taylor Jr. How do you continue getting ready for April's draft when you can't use a facility or travel to meet with teams?

Taylor's path became trickier after undergoing foot surgery on March 10 for an injury that caused him to miss eight games last season. He said he'll be out 4-6 months as he continues to rehab back home in Houston. However, he wasn't worried about the surgery affecting his draft stock. "I feel like I did all that I can do at the combine and I was able to show that I was capable of catching the ball out of the backfield and showing my speed while being hurt," said Taylor, who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.57 seconds. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

2020 NFL COMBINE INVITE: Patrick Taylor Jr., RB, Memphis,...Taylor opted to forego the draft in 2018 and returned for a senior campaign with intentions of serving as the Tigers' primary back. In a season-opening win over Ole Miss, Taylor had 27 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown before suffering a fourth quarter injury that would cost him the next eight games. Taylor returned to the lineup on Nov. 16 in a 45-27 road win at Houston and scored his final career Tiger touchdown in the Cotton Bowl against No. 10 Penn State. He capped his four-year Memphis career with 45 games played and 536 carries for 2,884 yards and 36 touchdowns. His 2,884 career rushing yards are third in program history behind DeAngelo Williams and former teammate Darrell Henderson. His 36 career rushing touchdowns rank second in Memphis history with Henderson and M Club Hall of Fame honoree Dave Casinelli. Taylor also added 55 catches for 434 yards and three touchdowns. - Memphis Football

Last season's Memphis defense seemed more about stopping opponents just enough so that an explosive Tiger offense could score more points. On Saturday, the roles were reversed with a much-improved Memphis defense stifling Mississippi, leading the Tigers to a 15-10 victory in the season opener for both teams. "Hats off to our defensive staff. Coach Fuller and the defensive staff was incredible, absolutely incredible," Memphis coach Mike Norvell said. "Kept them off-balance all game long." The Tigers held the Rebels to 173 yards of offense, including minus-1 yards rushing in the first half. But it was a fourth quarter safety by Memphis defensive end Bryce Huff that sealed it.

On first down after Tiger punter Adam Williams pinned the Rebels at their own 2, Huff busted through to tackle Corral as he dropped back to pass in the end zone. That gave Memphis its final 15-10 margin with 6:32 left. The Rebels would never get the ball back after the ensuing free kick and Memphis ran out the clock with a six-plus-minute drive. "That's something I'll remember for a long time," Norvell said of closing out the game. "This football team trains, prepares itself. This team plays a top-notch, physical football game here in Memphis." Patrick Taylor rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown to lead the Memphis offense. Kenneth Gainwell, who has taken over the Tigers all-purpose duties from Tony Pollard, now with the Dallas Cowboys, had 77 yards rushing for the Tigers and six catches for another 41 yards. - AP College Football
