  05/27/22 - QB Shea PattersonSr/2020, Michigan, 6-1, 212 (DS#18 QB) + More +

Six games into the rebooted United States Football League, Shea Patterson has already switched teams. The former Michigan quarterback and No. 1 pick in the league's 2022 draft was waived by the Michigan Panthers late Wednesday, a byproduct of the team's underwhelming start. Patterson was signed just an hour later by the USFL's New Orleans Breakers, who are set to play the Panthers Saturday night in Birmingham, Ala. (9 p.m., FS1).

In a post foreshadowing the move, Patterson took to social media platform Twitter on Tuesday morning to write: "The hustle will be worth it in the end, I promise." Through six games, Patterson ranked third among USFL quarterbacks in passing yards (973) but came in dead-last among league starters in QBR (112.4), a ranking used to measure efficiency. He's thrown five interceptions, several of them costly, and been sacked 13 times. Patterson has flashed his speed at times also, rushing for 171 yards and two touchdowns. But he's gotten off to slow starts that have hampered the Michigan offense. - Ann Arbor News

Shea Patterson will be returning to a TV screen near you soon. The former Michigan quarterback who went undrafted in 2020 and failed to catch on with an NFL team has agreed to play this fall in The Spring League, a developmental football league launched in 2017. The six-team league is set to begin a five-week schedule beginning Oct. 27, with a handful of games selected to air nationally on Fox Sports 1. Patterson is one of two quarterbacks on the "Blues" roster, and opens against the "Alphas" and former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett ... well known to Michigan fans. Patterson, who has family in the San Antonio area, was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in May. He was waived in July, and has since had a workout with the Houston Texas. At Michigan, Patterson threw for 5,661 yards and 45 touchdowns (and 15 interceptions) while completing 60 percent of his throws. He was a third-team all-Big Ten selection in 2019 and earned an invite to the Senior Bowl. - Ann Arbor News

Shea Patterson lasted just two months with the Kansas City Chiefs, cut on Friday to make room for veteran Matt Moore. The former Michigan quarterback was waived after signing with the Super Bowl champions in May as an undrafted free agent, a source confirmed to MLive. Patterson turned in two productive seasons at Michigan, completing 60 percent of his passes for 5,661 yards and 45 touchdowns (with 15 interceptions) while earning all-Big Ten honors twice. He was 19-7 as a starter but never able to live up to the high expectations set after his transfer from Ole Miss. If Patterson is unable to catch on with another NFL team, he could look to the CFL, where the British Columbia Lions acquired his rights in 2019. He's also under contract with the Texas Rangers of Major League Baseball. - Ann Arbor News

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has never been hesitant to challenge the rules that govern college athletics, particularly football. During this stay-at-home time during the COVID-19 pandemic, Harbaugh has designed three proposals that could re-shape the future for college football players by giving them more control over their careers. Among the proposals, Harbaugh suggests a player can declare for the NFL Draft after any season. If he is not selected in the first 224 picks of the draft, he could choose to return to college with his eligibility intact or sign an NFL free-agent contract and move on.

Harbaugh shared his thoughts Thursday afternoon in what he titled: "An Open Letter to the College Football Community," an opportunity, he suggested, to encourage discussion of the "evolving issues facing intercollegiate football." He wrote it is not unreasonable for college football players to feel their futures in professional football are hindered "given the rules currently in place." The idea of allowing an undrafted player to return to college has support from others around college football. "Let's find a way to let them come back," Big Ten Network analyst Gerry DiNardo said. "What is a good reason we're not letting them come back? I can't think of one." - Ann Arbor News

More than a week after going undrafted, Shea Patterson has found a home in the NFL. The only remaining unsigned free agent from Michigan was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, his agent, Bryan Ehrlich of Priority Athletes, confirmed to MLive. Patterson joins former teammates Mike Danna and Lavert Hill in Kansas City. Danna was a fifth-round selection of the Chiefs, while Hill was signed as a priority free agent.

The 6-foot-1, 212-pound Patterson faced an uphill battle in the draft given his low grade and a lack of demand for quarterbacks. Just 13 were taken over the course of the seven-round draft, leaving five still on the board by the end. A Shreveport, La., native, Patterson turned in two productive seasons at Michigan, but never seemed to hit that next gear. He threw for 2,600 yards and 22 touchdowns, completing 65 percent of his throws, in 2018 while guiding the Wolverines to a respectable 10-3 season. - Ann Arbor News

When it comes to 2019 Michigan football, Shea Patterson might be the most polarizing player on the team to those on the outside. While Patterson boosted his passing numbers from a season ago, throwing for 461 more yards and an additional touchdown, the efficiency just wasn't there - plus, the Wolverines won fewer games. Was he the reason for it all? That remains up for debate. He turned the ball over more than ever before in 2019 and played through an injury to start the season, certainly hampering his effectiveness and contributing to some of the Wolverines' early woes. Regardless of your opinion on Patterson, the quarterback from Shreveport, La., has moved on from his collegiate career in hopes of making the leap to the NFL. He has a late-round projection at the moment in a crowded quarterback class that includes Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovaoila, Justin Herbert, Jalen Hurts and many others. For now, Patterson ranks below all of them - including Nate Stanley from Iowa, who threw for fewer yards and had a lower QB rating.

Patterson's had a unique path to the NFL draft, set for Thursday for Saturday, one that few others can say they have taken. A former five-star recruit, Patterson started his career at Ole Miss, where he showed a ton of promise and threw for 2,259 and 17 touchdowns in seven games as a sophomore. But NCAA rules violations resulted in sanctions, forcing Patterson to look elsewhere. A year and four-month fight with the NCAA over immediate eligibility later, Patterson was at Michigan and cleared to play right away. His name was all over the place; some folks said Patterson would be a Heisman Trophy candidate in 2018, others projected him as the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL draft. - Ann Arbor News

It was a Pro Day without pro scouts. In less than 24 hours it was a quick turnaround to make something out of nothing, giving a few former Michigan players, including quarterback Shea Patterson, tight end Sean McKeon and receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones, an opportunity to throw and run routes in what amounted to a virtual Pro Day. The session Friday morning at the Total Sports Complex in northwest Ohio was the idea of Bryan Ehrlich, Patterson's agent from Priority Athletes, who wanted to find some way for them to see the fruition of their hard offseason work. Michigan's Pro Day was scheduled for Friday, but that was canceled Thursday along with all spring sports in response to growing concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patterson, McKeon and Peoples-Jones, who were among the 11 former Michigan players who participated in the NFL Combine, were also joined for the drills by former Michigan receiver Jacob West, who was a grad student last season. All week they had been working on the script they'd run at Pro Day. "We put the work in all week, so we decided to show up and find a way to get the work in," Patterson said after the throwing session. All of their drills were recorded and will be condensed to about 10 minutes of tape that will be sent to every NFL team, since scouts were called off the road on Thursday. The players said private workouts have been postponed for now. - Detroit News

Shea Patterson, playing one more season at Michigan? It was considered and, had the timeline for a decision been quicker, might have happened. The recently departed quarterback told reporters Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine that he mulled the idea of applying for a fifth year with the NCAA. It remains unclear what Patterson's rationale would have been, but the former transfer said the option was on the table. "I couldn't really find out until early February - maybe late February? - if I would even get the fifth year," Patterson said. "That's a big risk. I would have had to pass up the Senior Bowl. I would have had to pass up training. "If I didn't get that, I would have been stuck in no-man's land." - Michian Live

2019 ALL-BIG TEN THIRD TEAM (COACHES): QB Shea Patterson, Michigan,...Patterson earned third-team distinction on both the coaches' and media ballots. Patterson has totaled 2,828 yards in the air this season on 197-of-344 passing with 22 passing touchdowns, three shy of the single-season record at U-M. He has added another five touchdowns rushing and has thrown touchdowns to nine different Wolverines this year. Patterson is the only signal-caller in Michigan history with three consecutive 300-yard games, which came in the final three weeks of the 2019 season. His passing totals in those three games (384 yards, 366 yards, 305 yards) equaled the highest passing yardage total for any quarterback over any three-game stretch in program history (1,055 yards). For his career, Patterson cracked 5,000 yards this year, and was the second-fastest U-M passer to do so, accomplishing the feat in his 24th game at Indiana. - Michigan Football

Shea Patterson threw five touchdown passes and Nico Collins scored a career-high three times to lead No. 12 Michigan to a 39-14 blowout at Indiana on Saturday. The Wolverines (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten, No. 13 CFP) have won four straight overall and 24 straight in the series since 1987. Peyton Ramsey and Stevie Scott III each scored on 1-yard runs for the Hoosiers, but the offense stalled as Patterson started heating up and Indiana (7-4, 4-4) never had a chance. The Hoosiers have lost two in a row since clinching its first winning season in 12 years. Patterson was the primary reason. "They've got size and a lot of speed to go along with that," Indiana coach Tom Allen said. "We've got to win some of those one-on-one matchups and they were just better than us today."

He finished 20 of 32 with 366 yards and one interception, tied a single-game career high with his scoring passes and now has nine TD passes over the past two weeks. He also topped the 5,000-yard mark in his Michigan career during the game. And, with some help from his receivers, Patterson made it look easy. After Scott opened the game with his 1-yard scoring run, Patterson hooked up with Ronnie Bell for a 6-yard TD pass to tie the score. Ramsey answered with a 1-yard TD plunge but Donovan Peoples-Jones made a spectacular, spinning 11-yard TD catch to tie it at 14. "It means a lot to them to progressively improve each and every week," Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said. - Michigan/AP College Football

Shea Patterson threw for a season-high 384 yards and four touchdowns Saturday, sending No. 14 Michigan to a 44-10 romp over Michigan State for the Spartans' fifth straight loss. The Wolverines (8-2, 5-2, No. 15 CFP) scored 24 straight points after giving up the first touchdown and coasted to their most lopsided win in the rivalry since a 49-3 victory in 2002. The Spartans (4-6, 2-5) must win at Rutgers and against Maryland to be bowl eligible. Michigan State got off to a solid start, leading 7-0 after the first quarter on Brian Lewerke's 1-yard pass to Max Rosenthal.

The offensively challenged Spartans did little with the ball and simply couldn't stop Michigan in the air. Patterson completed 24 of 33 passes. He threw a 5-yard TD pass to Nick Eubanks in the second quarter; an 18-yard pass to Donovan Peoples-Jones for a score in the third; a 22-yard TD pass to Nico Collins in the fourth and a 39-yard pass to Cornelius Johnson with 2:33 left. Ronnie Bell had nine catches for a career-high 150 yards for the Wolverines, who haven't lost at home since closing the 2017 season with a loss to rival Ohio State. Lewerke was 17 of 30 for 166 yards with a TD and two interceptions on poorly thrown passes. Elijah Collins was limited to 27 yards rushing on 12 carries a week after running for 170 yards and two touchdowns in a collapsing loss to Illinois. Michigan State had won eight of 11 in the rivalry and two straight at the Big House. - AP College Football

Shea Patterson accounted for three touchdowns in the first half and ran for a fourth score in the third quarter, setting up No. 20 Michigan to rout Rutgers 52-0 on Saturday. The Wolverines (3-1, 1-1 Big Ten) enjoyed a confidence-boosting win following a humiliating loss at Wisconsin. The Scarlet Knights (1-3, 0-2) have not won a conference game since the 2017 season and have to improve a lot to end the drought this year. Patterson threw a quick out to Nico Collins on the opening drive and the receiver broke a tackle and sprinted up the sideline for a 48-yard score. On Michigan's next drive, Patterson had his first of three rushing TDs to match the number of scores the dual-threat quarterback had previously on the ground in his career.

Patterson played two-plus quarters and was 17 of 23 for 276 yards with one TD and one interception. The Wolverines led 24-0 at halftime and took advantage of Rutgers getting off to a rough start in the second half. Tre Avery fumbled on the kickoff return to open the second half and Raheem Blackshear was stopped for a loss on a reception on a fourth-and-1 later in the third quarter. The Scarlet Knights were called for a false start twice before punting late in the third. - Michigan/AP College Football

Jake Moody made a 43-yard field goal and No. 7 Michigan forced and recovered a fumble to hold on for a 24-21 double-overtime win over Army on Saturday. The Wolverines (2-0) didn't lead until the second extra period and would have lost at the end of regulation to the Black Knights (1-1) if Cole Talley made a 50-yard kick that sailed just short and to the right. "Sometimes you got to fight like that," Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said.

It marked the second straight year the U.S. Military Academy nearly beat a top 10 team for the first time in more than a half-century. The Black Knights pushed No. 5 Oklahoma into overtime on the road last year before losing 28-21. Army coach Jeff Monken said he was incredibly disappointed to come up short again. "Our guys had a determination this week and a belief that we were going to win this game long before we showed up," Monken said. Army had won 10 straight since, a run that college football's winningest program barely stopped. - AP College Football

Shea Patterson threw three touchdown passes and No. 7 Michigan easily won its season-opening game. However, the dual-threat senior quarterback wasn't in a mood to celebrate. Patterson lost a fumble on the first play of the game and put the ball on the turf again later in the game, casting a shadow on his perspective of the Wolverines' 40-21 win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday night.

"Obviously, didn't get off to a good start," Patterson said. "I've got to take care of the football." Michigan unveiled its no-huddle, spread offense and it was plagued by mental and physical mistakes. "We shot ourselves in the foot at times with pre-snap penalties and mishandling the ball," coach Jim Harbaugh said. The Blue Raiders took advantage of two turnovers, scoring TDs after recovering both fumbles. - AP College Football
