Jason Huntley became the 30th New Mexico State football player to be drafted on Saturday. Huntley was selected by the Detroit Lions with the 27th pick in the fifth round (No. 172 overall). Huntley is the first NM State football player to be selected in t he NFL Draft since wide receiver Jaleel Scott was picked by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round in 2017. "I'm thrilled for him and his family," Aggies head coach Doug Martin said. "(Huntley) sat behind Larry Rose III and never complained and just wo rked harder and learned and took reps and opportunity when he got them. He's a competitor when a lot of players will jump into the transfer portal when things don't go well and that's where he is where he is at today."Prior to the Draft, Huntley t alked about his versatility serving as his greatest strength. "He was very durable for his size and he went from 150 pounds when he got here and 190 pounds when he left so that tells you about his work ethic," Martin said. "He was unselfish and played tw o positions because that is what was best for the team and ultimately that is what helped him. He led us in tackles on the punt team. He was our right end. The NM State football team hosted its annual Pro Day Tuesday inside the Coca-Cola Weight Training Center and Aggie Memorial Stadium. Twenty-one players, including 16 from last year's squad, worked out and ran through position drills in front of 16 NFL sc outs and player personnel directors. Highlights from the day included running back Jason Huntley's blazing-fast 40-yard dash time and defensive back Shamad Lomax's impressive performance in the vertical jump. Defensive back Ray Buford Jr. showed off his quickness in the 20-yard shuttle, while running back Christian Gibson displayed his strength in the bench press.Huntley, who did not receive an invite to this year's NFL Combine, proved that he belonged with the best Tuesday. His time of 4.37 in t he 40-yard dash and broad jump of 131 inches (10 feet, 11 inches) would have both ranked first among running backs at this year's NFL Combine. The All-American's vertical jump of 39.5 inches would have ranked third among running backs at the Combine. His marks in the bench press (21), three-cone drill (7.19) and 20-yard shuttle (4.25), meanwhile, would have all ranked in the top 10 among players at his position. - Las Cruces Sun News

Jason Huntley had 191 yards rushing on 14 carries with three touchdowns and New Mexico State beat UTEP 44-35 on Saturday. The Aggies (2-9) led 14-13 at halftime and 21-16 after three quarters to set up the fourth-quarter shootout. Kai Locksley threw a 23 -yard TD pass to Jacob Cowing, and the failed two-point conversion made it 22-21 in UTEP's favor. New Mexico seized control with a pair of touchdowns sandwiching a field goal and led 37-22. Locksley threw for 358 yards and two scores to go along with 103 yards rushing on 18 carries and a touchdown. Justin Garrett caught four passes for 101 yards and a touchdown for UTEP. UTEP had an advantage in many statistical categories except the outcome.
