  04/26/20 - RB Antonio GibsonSr/2020, Memphis, 6-0, 228 (DS#6 RB) + More +

Former Memphis football standout Antonio Gibson has a new home. Gibson was drafted in the third round Friday by the Washington Redskins with the 66th overall pick in the NFL Draft. It comes after a senior season when he was named AAC co-Special Teams Player of the Year. "I feel good, man. I've been waiting on this all my life," Gibson said in an interview posted on the Redskins' official Twitter account. "That's where my mom and sister were born and raised so, you know, going back home. I feel like I can play running back and receiver. Wherever they decide to put me, I'm going to dominate."

Even though Gibson started at wide receiver, NFL scouts looked at him as a running back after he contributed more from the backfield to end the season. At the Senior Bowl, he lined up at running back and led the South team in rushing yards. He showed his versatility in the Tigers' 54-48 win against SMU when he caught a touchdown pass, rushed for a touchdown and returned a kickoff for a touchdown. All three plays were over 50 yards and Gibson finished with a school-record 386 all-purpose yards. Gibson finished last season with 735 receiving yards, 376 rushing yards and 645 kickoff return yards with 13 total touchdowns. He was tied for second in the nation with seven plays from scrimmage of 50 yards or more. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Antonio Gibson caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Brady White with 1:14 left and No. 16 Memphis defeated No. 21 Cincinnati 29-24 in the American Athletic Conference championship game on Saturday. The victory marked the first time Memphis (12-1, No. 17, CFP) has won the AAC title in its third straight conference championship game. The Tigers now wait for an invitation to the Cotton Bowl as the highest-ranked Group of Five team. Eight days after beating the Bearcats 34-24 at home in the regular-season finale, Memphis rallied for another win.

Along with scoring the go-ahead touchdown, Gibson ran for 130 yards, including a 65-yard TD dash. Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder, who did not play last week against Memphis, passed for 233 yards and ran for 113 more. The game became a back-and-forth battle in the fourth quarter. Sam Crosa's 33-yard field goal with 4:23 left gave the Bearcats (10-3, No. 20 CFP) a 24-23 lead. On the Tigers' next drive, Gibson caught two passes and ran five times, setting Memphis up at the Cincinnati 6. On the scoring play, Gibson was split right and caught White's pass. Cincinnati drove to the Memphis 26 on its final possession, but stalled. - Memphis/AP College Football

Mike Norvell's biggest selling point for the 19th-ranked Memphis Tigers is how his program is built for playmakers to make plays. Lots of plays for lots of yards. Wide receiver Antonio Gibson is Memphis' latest example, setting an American Athletic Conference record with 386 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns scored three different ways in a 54-48 victory over SMU on Saturday night. "We're going to try to put guys in the best position whether it's in the backfield, split out," Norvell said. "Heck, we'll line them up wherever." Just look at what the coach did with Gibson.

The senior had 104 yards receiving by halftime thanks to a 50-yard TD catch and finished with 130, took the opening kick of the third quarter 97 yards for a TD and capped his night by taking a handoff 78 yards for his third TD. If not for officials ruling his left elbow down just outside the goal line in the first quarter, it might've been more. Norvell credits the senior with really developing over the past year. "He is a special talent, and I love seeing him play his best ball as a senior," Norvell said. - AP College Football
