After Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney and coach Matt Rhule met with Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown at the Reese's Senior Bowl in January, they thought he would make some other NFL team very happy on April 23. "When walked out of the room, we just both shook our heads and said, 'Wow,'" Hurney said on Thursday night after the Panthers picked Brown with the seventh choice in the 85th NFL Draft. "I don't think either one of us thought at that point that we'd have the opportunity to get him." Rhule said: "When I left that meeting with him, I'm not going to say I was emotional, but I was, like, touched by who he was. His spirit comes through. And then you talk to the coaches, you talk to all the people at Auburn, and they can't talk eno ugh about him."What really got to Rhule was the way that Brown talked about Auburn defensive-line coach Rodney Garner. "He kept talking about his D-line coach and how much his D-line coach meant to him," Rhule said. "And I really believe that one of the ways -- people who are successful in life, they're usually very grateful people. They're appreciative of the people who have been in their lives or appreciative of the opportunities. They don't look at everything as negative; they look at it as po sitive. And when he talked about his defensive-line coach, here's a guy getting ready to make a bunch of money and he's talking about how much this man's impacted his life. I said, 'That must be a great defensive-line coach -- coach Garner.' Then at the same time, I also said, 'This is someone who really gets it.' It really kind of grabbed me." Brown could have been drafted last year, but he chose to return for his senior season. - Birmingham News

He was also a finalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award (given to the nation's top defensive player) and the Outland Trophy (given to the nation's top interior lineman) in 2019. Additionally, Brown exemplified being a student-athlete at Aub urn, as he was awarded the Lott IMPACT Trophy, given to the best defensive player who displays the qualities of integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community, and tenacity. Every NFL team has contacted Brown going into the draft - and for good reason. Winner of the 2019 Lott IMPACT Trophy, which goes to the defensive player who has the biggest IMPACT (Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity), Bro wn posted 55 tackles, 12 1/2 stops for loss, four sacks and four pass breakups and two forced fumbles his senior year last season. From pushing an LSU offensive lineman back into Heisman Trophy winner and projected top overall pick, Joe Burrow, for a sac k to taking the ball out of Florida quarterback Kyle Trask's hand and kept rumbling, Brown lived up to the award name. "You've got to be able to impose your will on folks," said about Brown, a first-team All-SEC selection and finalist for the Chuck Bedna rik Award and Outland Trophy. As dominant as Brown was his senior year, he enters the draft viewed as primarily a run stopper who isn't the same force of nature on passing downs. Brown doesn't see himself as just a "two-down" player. "I always here he's a run stuffer, but in order for you to be able to get to the passer, you've got to be able to stop the run," Brown said. "I bring that to the table, but I feel like I'm efficient at being able to push the pocket and be able to put pressure on the q uarterback. I may not have a bunch of sacks, but if you watch me play, you know quarterback is not sitting back there having all day (to throw), either." - Arizona Republic

Derrick Brown is paying attention. The former Auburn star and unanimous All-American sees those questioning his ability and the doubters who wonder if he's worth a first-round pick or worthy of being among the first 10 players off the board in April's NF L Draft. He has taken note of the people eyeing his three-cone drill time from the NFL Combine (8.22 seconds, which was the fourth-worst among tackles in Combine history), and those - including one Pro Football Focus analyst - who doubt he's a good enoug h pass-rusher to warrant being selected in the first round. And Brown has a message for all of them. "Well, you know, if you care about the three-cone drill as much as handling a double-team, then hey, go for it," Brown said after Auburn's pro day on Fri day. "If that's what you think, that's what you think. I can't do nothing about it." "(Those drills) tell you nothing about how you play football," Brown said. "So, I mean-I don't necessarily think it's even the team or coaches that worry about it. I mea n, you know, tape does all the talking for me that anybody needs." - Birmingham News

Shaun Shivers scored on an 11-yard run with 8:08 left to put No. 16 Auburn ahead and another failed field goal by Alabama in the Iron Bowl wiped away the fifth-ranked Crimson Tide's playoff hopes in a wild 48-45 victory for the Tigers on Saturday. Auburn (9-3, 5-3 Southeastern Conference) survived a final, marathon Crimson Tide drive when Joseph Bulovas' 30-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright with 2:00 left. Auburn couldn't get a first down on JaTarvious Whitlow's three runs while Alabama (10-2 , 6-2) burned its final two time outs. But the Tide was called for illegal substitution after the Tigers lined up for a punt, setting off a fist-pumping celebration for coach Gus Malzahn.Auburn fans stormed the field to celebrate another Iron Bowl thriller, filling it from end zone to end zone as they did in the 2013 Kick-Six game, when the Tigers. returned a missed Tide field goal for a game-winning touchdown. The Tide had made the first five College Football Playoffs fields, but its case was da maged with a 46-41 loss to No. 1 LSU. The team's in-state rival delivered the final blow. Alabama worked more than six minutes off the clock before settling for Bulovas' attempt. Quarterback Mac Jones, who replaced injured star Tua Tagovailoa, scrambled for 18 yards on fourth-and-7 to get the Tide into easier field goal range. The drive stalled at the 13 when Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown batted a third-down pass back to Jones, who threw a pair of pick-sixes. Jaylen Waddle caught three touchdown passes and scored on a 98-yard kickoff return for the Tide, helping Alabama build a 45-40 fourth-quarter lead. - Auburn/AP College Football

As far as Preseason Watch lists go, to me and I been at this a while, see and study a lot of trends...this is THE list to be on. Over the years it has grown to support almost three full All-Star games as well. If you made the list but are not selected as one of the 110 invited to the Senior Bowl for whatever reason but you can play, not injured, etc., chances are high you will be invited to another All-Star game.
