Dre Brown, Illinois, Player News
|
Dre Brown has had quite the 2020. And it's not even halfway over. The Illinois football team's most outstanding offensive player during the 2019 season spent the first two months of the year training in Naperville, getting his 5-foot-11, 210-pound frame ready for the rigors of NFL draft prep. He then had a solid pro day in Champaign on March 9 at the Irwin Indoor Practice Facility, boosting his hope he could wind up on some NFL teams' radars. A potential late-round draft pick or an undrafted free agent once the draft concluded seemed feasible. Then, the coronavirus pandemic hit. Stifling almost all of Brown's opportunities to impress teams in person during the weeks leading up to the NFL draft."I knew I needed to get in front of coaches and shak e their hands," Brown said. "That character piece of mine would have helped me out in the process. "It was tough because I was banking on either signing as an undrafted free agent or get a mini-camp invite. Without that, it's kind of hard to put a close to this chapter in my life. I never really got a chance. That was probably the hardest part." Brown's dreams to suit up for a pro football team this spring and summer never came to fruition. He's staying in shape, though, just in case an opportunity pres ents itself later this summer. - News Gazette Tribune

Dre Brown ran for a career high 131 yards and Tony Adams returned an interception for a touchdown to help Illinois slosh through the rain Saturday for a 24-6 victory at Purdue. The Fighting Illini (4-4, 2/3 Big Ten) won their second straight game and cla imed the Cannon Trophy for the first time since 2015. Purdue (2-6, 1-4) has lost two in a row and five of its last six, putting their postseason hopes in peril. It sure wasn't easy for the offenses in a steady storm with puddles forming around the end zo nes and sidelines. The Boilermakers gained only 271 total yards -- 99 coming on a fourth-quarter drive for their only points.Illinois quarterback Brandon Peters scored on a 1-yard TD run late in the first half but was just 3 of 6 with 26 yards thr ough the air. "Part of being a good football team is being able to put something behind you and move on," Illini coach Lovie Smith said. "Today it was about running the football." They made just enough plays to take control and never allowed the Boilerma kers to challenge. Brown's 44-yard run set up James McCourt for a 38-yard field goal in the first quarter and Adams' 13-yard interception return made it 10-0 early in the second. - AP College Football
