Steven Montez has a pretty simple plan for the next several weeks leading up to the NFL Draft. "Stay here (in Boulder) and stay in shape," the former Colorado quarterback said Wednesday after the Buffs' annual pro day. "Don't eat pizza. Don't drink soda. Don't eat candy. Don't do any of that stuff." Montez was one of 16 former Buffs to work out for pro scouts at CU's indoor practice facility. There were 32 representatives from 26 teams (25 NFL, one XFL). Among the highlights was Davion Taylor's blisteri ng time in the 40-yard dash, Delrick Abrams Jr.'s overall performance, Tony Brown showing off his speed, and Tim Lynott performing well in specific areas.Last month, Montez had a good performance at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, including ranki ng among the fastest quarterbacks in the 40-yard dash at 4.68 seconds. He also ranked among the top seven in the 20-yard shuttle, vertical jump, broad jump and cone drill. Because he did well in Indy, Montez didn't participate in drills Wednesday, but di d throw for scouts and had a solid performance with the draft around the corner, April 23-25. "I just wanted to show my ability to throw the ball," said Montez, who measured at 6-foot-4, 229 pounds. "I think that was the focal point of me coming out here today. I think my numbers at the combine kind of spoke for themselves. I definitely did want to come out here and throw, especially with my teammates, and I thought it went really well." - Daily Camera

The Colorado football team held their annual Pro Timing day on Wednesday with 39 representatives from 29 NFL teams present, though originally there were supposed to be several more assistant coaches; many NFL teams are pulling back and keeping their pers onnel close to home because of the Coronavirus situation around the world. Today's participants consisted of quarterback Steven Montez (who participated in passing drills only), wide receiver Tony Brown, tight ends Beau Bisharat and Jalen Harris, offensi ve linemen Arlington Hambright, Tim Lynott, and Jack Shutack, linebackers Davion Taylor, Alex Tchangam, and Nu'umotu Falo Jr., defensive back Delrick Abrams Jr., safety Mikial Onu, long snapper J.T. Bale, punter Alex Kinney, and placekicker Davis Price. Also participating was Daniel Talley, a former CU defensive back who graduated in 2018 but was unable to participate in that year's Pro Day due to injury. - Colorado Football

Steven Montez, who had zero TDs and six interceptions in his last two games, threw three TD passes, including a 71-yarder to Laviska Shenault Jr. on the second play of the second half. But he wasn't the same after taking a hard hit from safety Hunter Ech ols late in the third quarter. "He seemed fine," Tucker said. "If he wasn't, he wouldn't have been back in there." Montez said as soon as he passed concussion protocol, "I was just like I've got to get back out there. This is crunch time, I can't be sitt ing in the training room."Montez's backup, Blake Stenstrom came in with 4 seconds left in the third quarter and gained 27 yards on a keeper but was replaced by Montez to start the fourth quarter. Montez completed just 4 of 11 passes for 40 yards a fter that, and one of those was a 3-yarder to Alex Fontenot on fourth-and-4 with 90 seconds left. Steven Montez threw for 337 yards and had three touchdown passes to Tony Brown, lifting Colorado to a 34-31 win over No. 24 Arizona State on Saturday night. Arizona State (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12) won its first three games behind its defense, allowing 21 combine d points. Colorado (3-1, 1-0) had 24 points by halftime and racked up 477 total yards against the Sun Devils, despite playing most of the game without star receiver Laviska Shenault due to injury. Brown, who had three career touchdowns entering Saturday' s game, picked up the slack with nine catches for 150 yards. Arizona State's Jayden Daniels threw for 345 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Brandon Aiyuk nine times for 122 yards to keep the Sun Devils within reach.Montez put Colorado up 3 1-24 in the third quarter with a 20-yard TD pass to Brown. Daniels answered with a 39-yard TD pass to Frank Darby to tie the game for the fourth time. James Stefanou gave Colorado the lead back with a 44-yard field goal with 2:03 left and Colorado forced the Sun Devils to turn the ball over on downs. A year ago, Arizona State moved into the AP Top 25 with the marquee win of coach Herm Edwards' first season, knocking off Michigan State. In four years of college football, including two as a starting quarterback, Steven Montez has had a few moments where he scrolls through social media and comes across a nasty comment directed his way. "I don't really mind people talking about me. I know it comes with the job," said Montez, who is entering his third season as Colorado's starting quarterback. "You have a bad game, people are going to bash you and all of that. I get some (direct messages). But it takes two clicks to block somebody." As the Buffs' quarterback, Montez has been the most scrutinized player on the team for the past two years. He's directed some memorable wins, delivered some remarkable passes - in addition to a few great runs - and put himself in position to break a lot of school records. Yet, Montez's general performance has been the focal point of criticism for some. For others, it's as simple as looking at his win-loss record: 12-15. Add, for some, there have been questions about his leadership ability. Montez's team mates, however speak of a young man who has evolved as a person and a player during his time in Boulder while never losing his desire to lead CU to a bowl game. - Daily Camera
