In the fourth quarter, he returned the kickoff for a score which was the longest kickoff return of a touchdown in school history.   Beau Brungard accounted for six touchdowns - three passing and three rushing - to lead Youngstown State to a 48-29 victory over Indiana State on Saturday. Brungard had 264 yards passing and 90 yards rushing for Youngstown State (7-4, 4-3 Missouri Valley Football Conference). Max Tomczak caught seven passes for 109 yards and Jaden Gilbert had 91 yards rushing that included a 73-yard non-scoring run. After an explosive first half in which Youngstown State took a 31-26 lead, the Penguins tightened up on defense and allowed only three points in the second half.

Brungard ran for three short touchdowns in the first half and threw a 20-yard pass to Ky Wilson for another. Indiana State kept it close before halftime, never trailing by more than nine points as Keegan Patterson threw touchdown passes of 11, 78 and 74 yards to Rashad Rochelle. In the second half, Brungard threw touchdown passes of 5 and 2 yards to Austin Bray as the Penguins built a 45-26 lead early in the fourth quarter. Rochelle had 224 yards receiving, nearly doubling his previous best of 113 yards. Patterson threw for 319 yards for the Sycamores (3-8, 1-6). The Penguins, ranked No. 19 in the FCS coaches poll, continued their push for a playoff bid, now having won four of their last five games.   Beau Brungard accounted for six touchdowns, and Youngstown State scored on each of its five drives in the second half to beat Southern Illinois 48-38 on Saturday. Brungard completed 26 of 35 passes for 345 yards and threw four touchdown passes. He added 104 yards rushing on 15 carries and a pair of scoring runs. It was his 10th career game with more than 100 yards rushing. Youngstown State (6-4, 3-3 Missouri Valley Football Conference), ranked No. 22 in the FCS coaches' poll, trailed 24-14 at halftime.<p>

Brungard threw a touchdown pass to end each of the Penguins' first two drives of the third quarter. Jaden Gilbert then broke loose on a 40-yard touchdown run to stretch the Penguins' lead to 35-24. Brungard had a 17-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. His fourth TD pass was a 13-yarder to Gilbert with 1:51 to play. Gilbert finished with 149 yards rushing on nine carries. Ky Wilson caught two touchdown passes and Ethan Wright had one for the Penguins. DJ Williams was 23-of-42 passing for 361 yards and threw three touchdown passes for No. 16 Southern Illinois (6-4, 3-3). He also added 55 yards on the ground and a touchdown.   Beau Brungard passed for two scores, rushed for two more, and caught another as FCS No. 22 Youngstown State routed Murray State, 51-17 on Saturday. After Murray State scored on the first drive of the game, the Penguins (5-3, 2-2 Missouri Valley) responded with 38 unanswered points, highlighted by Brungard's 50-yard touchdown grab thrown by wide receiver Fresh Walters on a double-pass play. Max Tomczak and Flash Wilson also had touchdown grabs, with Wilson reeling in a 62-yard bomb from Brungard late in the second quarter. Brungard was 22 of 25 passing for 248 yards.

The Penguins outgained the Racers 539-271 on the day, and out-possessed them by over 10 minutes. For the Racers (0-8, 0-4), Lucas Desjardins caught three passes for 47 yards and one touchdown. Jim Ogle was 11 of 20 passing, with 102 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Youngstown State has won two straight games after dropping two straight to ranked opponents. Brungard threw for a career-high 328 yards by completing 23-of-34 passes while rushing for 200 yards on a career-best 30 carries against the Redbirds. He accounted for five touchdowns and a school record 528 yards of total offense in the win. While no FCS comparisons of his 300-200-yard performance are readily available, he joins Jayden Daniels (LSU), Malik Cunningham (Louisville) and Marques Tuiasosopo (Washington) as Division I players to accomplish the feat in a single game in college football history. He scored on rushes of 48, two and one yards while throwing for scores of 53 and 36 in the game. It's his second 200-plus yard rushing performance of the season. Brungard was 23-of-34 passing for 328 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, with another 200 yards and three rushing scores. He entered fourth in the FCS averaging 121.2 yards rushing and tied for sixth in rushing touchdowns with nine.

After Brungard's 2-yard rushing score in the second quarter, Tommy Rittenhouse threw touchdown passes on three consecutive drives for the FCS No. 9 Redbirds (3-3, 0-2 Missouri Valley Football Conference). Rittenhouse was 16 of 29 for 206 yards passing with five touchdowns and two interceptions. Wenkers Wright caught two touchdown passes. Both of Rittenhouse's interceptions led to scores for the Penguins. Brungard's lone interception resulted in a touchdown for the Redbirds at the end of the first half. He kicked a 48-yard field goal to tie the contest with 1:37 remaining to tie the game. Then YSU moved into position at the Towson 24-yard line with three seconds left and he calmly drilled a 40-yarder as time expired. He also kicked a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter and made his two extra-point attempts for 11 points. Lastovka is the Penguins' third different national player of the week this season (Beau Brungard, offense, and Dathan Hickey, defense).   Andrew Lastovka connected on a game-tying 48-yard field goal and less than two minutes later hit a 42-yard game-winner as time expired as Youngstown State stunned Towson 31-28 on Saturday night. The Penguins (3-1) trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter, but scored on every drive in the period to complete the comeback. Beau Brungard threw for 277 yards and one touchdown, and added 100 yards and two scores on the ground. Max Tomczak had seven receptions for 116 yards, with four receptions and 56 yards in the fourth quarter alone. Youngstown's offense needed the help of its defense, as the Penguins forced Towson to punt twice in the final six minutes. Preston Zandier led the Penguins with seven total tackles, and Jussiah Williams-West and Dathan Hickey each had six.   Beau Brungard ran for four touchdowns and set a Missouri Valley Conference record for quarterbacks with 264 yards and passed for another score as Youngstown State defeated Robert Morris 56-17 on Saturday. Brungard, a junior, scored on runs of 72, 20 and 4 yards in the first half as the Penguins (2-0) took a 42-3 lead. He added a 28-yard run early in the third, exiting the game after 10 carries. Brungard was 12-of-16 passing for 122 yards and his 1-yard touchdown pass to Max Tomczak put Youngstown on top 7-3.

Tahir Mills ran for an 18-yard touchdown that made it 56-3 as the Penguins reached the end zone on the first eight possessions before punting. Antuan Gardner and Kylon Wilson also had rushing touchdowns for Youngstown, which piled up 424 on the ground and 593 total yards. Robert Morris (0-2), which got a field goal on the opening drive of the game, finally scored on a 34-yard pass from Zach Tanner to Thomas Lee early in the fourth quarter and Tanner found Kai Holloway for a 16-yard score late.   WEEK 1 MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: DB Dathan Hickey, Youngstown State, Sr., Bristol, Conn.,...Hickey's YSU debut was impressive as he was credited with 13 tackles to go along with a key fourth quarter interception and a forced and recovered fumble in the second quarter. A transfer from Yale, Hickey had not played a collegiate game in 706 days. His interception came in the fourth quarter with 2:15 left and YSU clinging to a nine-point lead.
