  11/05/22 - Devin NealSr/2025, Kansas + More +

Devin Neal ran for 224 yards and a touchdown and had 110 receiving yards, leading Kansas past No. 18 Oklahoma State 37-16 on Saturday. The Jayhawks (6-3, 3-3 Big 12 Conference) are bowl eligible for the first time since 2008 when they beat Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. Kansas' ground game led the way with 351 yards as a team with Neal setting career highs in both rushing and receiving yards against the Cowboys (6-3, 3-3). Jason Bean was efficient in the air, too. He went 18-for-23 passng for 203 yards with two touchdowns while rushing for a 72-yard touchdown.

Neal and Bean combined for 237 yards on the ground in the first half with two touchdowns. Bean gained 93 yards on four carries while Neal had six catches. Kansas benefited from Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders not playing, with freshman Garrett Rangel throwing interceptions on the Cowboys' first two drives. Rangel went 27 of 40 for 304 yards and two touchdowns. Bryan Green had nine catches for 105 yards for Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State had four turnovers, which resulted in 14 points for Kansas. The Cowboys scored a touchdown with 10 minutes left in the second quarter, their first points in 83 game minutes spanning over their last three. It was an 8-yard touchdown pass by Rangel to Stephon Johnson. - Kansas/AP College Football

  10/13/22 - Logan BrownrJr/2026, Kansas + More +

Wisconsin offensive tackle Logan Brown has been dismissed from the team because of an "internal incident," interim coach Jim Leonhard said Thursday. Brown, a former five-star recruit, had tweeted late Wednesday night that he was entering the transfer portal. "The reality of what happened is there was an internal incident here within the program and Logan Brown was dismissed from the program," Leonhard said. "It was not a choice. He was dismissed from our program." Leonhard, who took over for the fired Paul Chryst on Oct. 2, didn’t detail the incident that led to Brown's exit. Brown was rated as the nation's No. 17 overall prospect in the 2019 class, according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports.

He started two games at right tackle and one at left tackle this season as injuries have caused the Badgers (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) to use five different offensive line combinations in their first six games. Brown did not start either of Wisconsin's last two games. Chryst was fired a day after Wisconsin lost at home to Illinois and former coach Bret Bielema to fall to 2-3. Leonhard won his debut against Northwestern. Wisconsin plays at Michigan State (2-4, 0-3) on Saturday. - AP College Football

Kansas football coach Lance Leipold said Tuesday that junior quarterback Jalon Daniels was "doubtful" for Saturday's 11 a.m. game at Oklahoma, and all signs point to redshirt senior Jason Bean making the start for the 19th-ranked Jayhawks. Daniels was injured late in the first half of last Saturday's 38-31 loss to No. 17 TCU when linebacker Jamoi Hodge landed on Daniels' right shoulder with the entirety of his body weight. Daniels left the game after the play and was evaluated in the medical tent and the locker room before emerging for the second half in a black hoodie, clearly done for the day. Before Daniels returned to the field, Leipold told FS1 sideline reporter Allison Williams that Daniels' return to the game was a 50-50 proposition. He said after the game that the KU QB was still being evaluated and that the 48 hours that followed would help determine where things go from there. - Lawrence Journal World

  10/12/22 - Logan BrownrJr/2026, Kansas + More +

Offensive tackle and former five-star recruit Logan Brown said via Twitter on Wednesday that he's entering the transfer portal and leaving Wisconsin. Brown issued a tweet thanking Wisconsin for the opportunity and saying, "I will be entering the transfer portal and will be continuing my academic and football career elsewhere." Brown was rated as the nation's No. Brown hasn't been a starter in either of Wisconsin's last two games. After redshirting in 2019, Brown played all seven games in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and all 13 games last season. But, he didn't make his first career start until this year. - AP College Football

Jason Bean took over at quarterback to start the second half for Kansas on Saturday after Jalon Daniels left the 19th-ranked Jayhawks' game against No. 17 TCU with an apparent injury to his right shoulder. Daniels was hurt as Jamoi Hodge sacked him with 41 seconds left in the first half, and he went to the locker room for treatment on his throwing shoulder. He was on the sideline in street clothes in the second half with his right arm in a sling. Bean threw touchdown passes on two of the Jayhawks' first three series of the second half to put Kansas ahead 17-10. Daniels has been the catalyst for the Jayhawks' surprising 5-0 start. He came into the game fifth in the Big 12 in total offense. Daniels fumbled at the goal line in the second quarter as the Jayhawks were driving for what would have been the go-ahead touchdown. He was 5 for 10 for 89 yards when he got hurt. - AP College Football

Kansas football coach Lance Leipold said Tuesday that running back Daniel Hishaw Jr. will be out for "an extended period of time" because of an undisclosed injury suffered during KU's 14-11 win over Iowa State last weekend. Hishaw left last Saturday's game on a cart with what appeared to be a lower body injury and he was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for further examination. Leipold said Tuesday that he made it to the hospital last Saturday night to visit with the KU running back just before he was discharged. "He was doing a lot better than I could've expected," Leipold said, adding that the redshirt sophomore back was in "decent spirits." The speculation on message boards and social media was that Hishaw injured his hip. The third-year sophomore missed all of last season with what he described in August as a "rare" hip injury that happened during preseason camp in 2021.

However, Leipold said the specifics of Hishaw's injury and a timetable for how long he will be out were not yet available and that he would "let you know more as we move along." The 5-foot-10, 210-pound redshirt sophomore from Moore, Oklahoma, was enjoying a breakout season before the injury. After missing all of last season, he appeared in all five of KU's games so far and was tied for the team lead in rushing touchdowns, with five, and also averaging six yards per carry on 44 attempts. His powerful running style and ability to impact the game as a receiver gave the Jayhawks an additional weapon to utilize in their offense which has ranked among the most explosive in all of college football so far this season. "I think his running style and physicality is what separated him," Leipold said Tuesday. - Lawrence Journal World

Alabama reclaimed No. 1 from Georgia in The Associated Press college football poll in one of the closest votes in the recent years, and six teams — including Kansas — made their season debut on Sunday. The Crimson Tide received 25 first-place votes and 1,523 points in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, two points more than the Bulldogs. Georgia received 28 first-place votes to become the first team since Alabama in November 2019 to have the most first-place votes but not be No. 1. The Tide was No. 2 behind LSU that year, with 21 first-place votes to the Tigers' 17. The last time there was a two-point margin between Nos. 1 and 2 was Nov. 1, 2020, when Clemson was ahead of Alabama. There have been three other polls with a two-point margin at the top since 2007. Ohio State remained third, but the Buckeyes also gained some ground on the top two, getting 10 first-place votes.

The Crimson Tide started the season at No. 1, but the defending national champion Bulldogs took the top spot away from their Southeastern Conference rivals after Week 2 when Alabama needed a late field goal to beat Texas. The Bulldogs remain unbeaten but needed a fourth-quarter rally to beat four-touchdown underdog Missouri on Saturday night. Earlier in the day, the Tide managed to pull away from Arkansas in the second half without Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young. Young sprained his throwing shoulder in the first half and missed most of the game in Fayetteville, Arkansas. No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Clemson and No. 6 Southern California all won and held their places this week, though the Wolverines and Tigers are now separated by just three points. No. 7 Oklahoma State, followed by Tennessee, Mississippi and Penn State, round out the top 10. The rest of the AP Top 25 got a major overhaul after 10 ranked teams lost, five to unranked opponents. That cleared the way for seven teams to move into the rankings this week, most notably No. 19 Kansas. The Jayhawks are ranked for the first time since Oct. 18, 2009, which was the longest drought for a team currently in a Power Five conference. - AP College Football

Jace Gilbert missed three field goals, including a 37-yarder with a chance to tie the game with under 30 seconds to play as Kansas held off Iowa State 14-11 on Saturday to remain undefeated. At 5-0 overall, this is the Jayhawks' best start to the season since 2009 and just the second time in the last 14 years they’re 2-0 to begin Big 12 Conference play. Jalon Daniels and Daniel Hishaw both scored rushing touchdowns for the Jayhawks, who were shut out in the second half, but did just enough to hang on for the victory.

Daniels threw for 93 yards while Iowa State's Hunter Dekkers had 278 passing yards but threw a costly interception in the second quarter. Dekkers' interception in the second quarter ended up turning into a touchdown for the Jayhawks, a 2-yard run by Daniels for a 14-0 lead. Iowa State got on the board just before halftime with Dekkers' 7-yard pass to Easton Dean. A two-point conversion after a botched PAT snap drew the Cyclones within 14-8. Gilbert came into the game 5-for-5 on field goals for the Cyclones but missed two kicks off the post - one in the first quarter and another in the fourth - which proved costly. - Kansas/AP College Football

A 4-0 start put the Jayhawks atop the others receiving votes pile Sunday in The Associated Press college football poll presented by Regions Bank, 41 points behind No. 25 Kansas State. The Jayhawks have not been ranked since mid-October 2009, a dry spell of nearly 13 years that is currently the longest among Power Five conference programs. Getting stuck behind the Sunflower State rivalry must have been particularly annoying to Kansas fans. The Wildcats moved into the rankings for the first time this season after upsetting Oklahoma in Norman on Saturday. That big win came a week after K-State lost at home to Tulane, which in turn lost to Southern Mississippi on Saturday. Those types of results can twist voters in knots.

Meanwhile, Kansas and quarterback Jaylon Daniels have rolled through Tennessee Tech, West Virginia, Houston and Duke, with the middle two on the road. Take out the FCS opponent and the Jayhawks have an average margin of victory of 13 points. They also rank third in the nation behind No. 3 Ohio State and TCU and just ahead of No. 2 Alabama in yards per play (7.80). Nice company. Kansas' resume has a similar look to No. 24 Pittsburgh's. Both beat West Virginia in close games. Both have Group of Five road wins: Kansas at Houston and Pitt at Western Michigan. Both beat FCS schools. The difference is Pitt lost an OT game to No. 8 Tennessee at home and Kansas handed Duke its first loss of the season. Close call, but Reality Check says advantage KU. The voters are going to make the Jayhawks do more. - AP College Football

Jalon Daniels accounted for five touchdowns to lead Kansas past Duke 35-27 on Saturday afternoon. Daniels' 3-yard run gave the Jayhawks a 34-20 lead with 4:42 remaining. It is the first time since 2009 the Jayhawks have started 4-0. They also completed their first undefeated nonconference schedule since 2013. Daniels went 19-of-23 for 324 yards passing and a career-high four touchdowns. He led the team in rushing with 83 yards and a score. The Jayhawks held a 21-13 lead at halftime thanks to three touchdown passes from Daniels.

Kansas went 3-for-4 in the red zone, getting receiving touchdowns from Luke Grimm and Trevor Kardell and Daniels a rushing score. The Jayhawks entered play leading the Big 12 in red zone offense where they are 22 of 24 with 20 touchdowns. Riley Leonard went 24-of-35 passing for 324 yards, including a 24-yard score to Jalon Calhoun.
