In just one week, James Madison had two defensive tackles leave the team and retire from the sport of football, leaving what was one of the deepest parts of the roster thin. First it was redshirt freshman Tyler Negron, a reserve nose guard that provided depth along the defensive front on Aug. 19. But earlier this week the Dukes' defensive line lost a bigger piece, redshirt senior Tony Thurston, who logged 45 tackles and nine tackles for a loss last fall, hung his cleats up.

JMU head coach Curt Cignetti said he was excited about the defensive line's depth entering fall camp and that both of the departures surprised him. "I thought we had a lot of depth, a lot of guys that could become players," Cignetti said. "It takes a big commitment and sacrifice and if your heart's not totally into it … it takes a special breed to play this game. That's a tough loss from a depth standpoint, but next man up." That next man up for the Dukes is a handful of interior linemen, including redshirt sophomore James Carpenter, redshirt sophomore Jordan Funk, Marshall transfer Jamare Edwards and Rutgers transfer Jamree Kromah, who was recruited to JMU as a defensive end. Though the Dukes have a quartet of interior defensive linemen ready to play against Middle Tennessee on Sept. 3, Cignetti said the depth at that spot is a concern. - Daily News-Record

There's no debate when it comes to the No. 1 wide receiver at James Madison. Redshirt senior Kris Thornton returns for the Dukes after a breakout campaign in 2021, when he earned First Team All-CAA honors and set a JMU single-season record for receptions. "He's so important," said JMU redshirt senior safety Sam Kidd. "Obviously he's a deep threat. His speed...that's so significant." Thornton hauled in 83 receptions for 1,097 yards and 13 touchdowns last fall. He made his JMU debut in the 2021 spring season when he registered 26 receptions for 428 yards and three touchdowns across eight games during a modified season amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Manassas, Va. native is now the clear leader of a position group that lost superstar Antwane Wells Jr. (2021: 1,250 yards, 15 TDs) to South Carolina via the transfer portal while Scott Bracey (2021: 20 receptions, 299 yards) exhausted his eligibility. "I think the main thing that changed for me was trying to be more of a leader this year," said Thornton. "I was kind of a leader last year but trying to really lead the younger guys and the new people coming into our room this year. That's really my main thing that changed with my role." Thornton, who played two seasons at VMI and sat out the 2019 campaign after transferring to James Madison, is the only JMU player to earn preseason all-conference honors from the Sun Belt. He was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team offense. "It's been a long ride, I know that," said Thornton. "I came in 2017 at VMI and now six years later, I am finishing up...I have played two seasons at JMU and I am ready for this season coming up." - WHSV.com

James Madison defensive lineman Jamare Edwards was on the sideline during the Dukes' spring camp, but his impact on the defensive side of the ball won't be absent for long. When Edwards returns to the field with the Dukes for fall camp, his 6-foot-3, 281-pound frame will not be hard to miss. The Miami, Fla., native transferred to JMU from Marshall this past January, just days before the spring semester started. While with Marshall, Edwards was a force on the defensive front. In his five seasons there, Edwards made 34 appearances with 15 starts, racking up 87 tackles, six sacks and 17 quarterback hurries.

This season, he'll get a chance to square off with his former team as the Thundering Herd will make their way to Harrisonburg in October. Marshall head coach Charles Huff said he's excited to see Edwards in the Sun Belt this season and is rooting for him, except in the game against the Thundering Herd. "Jamare's an athletic specimen for his size," Huff said. "He's got really good agility. He moves well for a defensive lineman, knows the game...He did a really good job for us." In Huff's first season at Marshall, Edwards played in 10 games, logging 29 total tackles with 4.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks. - Daily News-Record

On Friday, James Madison will become an official member of the Sun Belt Conference. The Dukes will now be covered by ESPN+. JMU Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne said the transition to the Sun Belt would provide the opportunity for JMU student-athletes to gain increased exposure on a national stage. "The conference is a phenomenal landing spot for JMU," emphasized Bourne. "This is a day we've been looking forward to for a long time." The Dukes have a long history of standout female athletes, and Bourne said he expects women's sports to thrive in the Sun Belt and beyond. "In the next five to ten years, we're going to see women's sports occupy a greater part of the scene," he added. "We're excited about the opportunity to promote this growth because we've had so many successful women's programs at JMU." - WHSV.com

When EA Sports' newest NCAA College Football video game releases, Bridgeforth Stadium is going to look and sound realistic. With a targeted release date of next summer, according to Matt Brown of the Extra Points newsletter, the video game developer has been collecting audio and video assets from schools to use in the latest edition of the game, including James Madison. JMU sent five songs to EA Sports; the fight song, "Get It On," "Start Wearing Purple," "All We Do Is Win," and the JMU Alma Mater, according to Kevin Warner, JMU associate athletic director for communications. "To EA Sports' credit, they're working very hard to capture the specific game day feel of each venue," Warner said. The Dukes also sent a few video board and public address announcing prompts for the game, including one for first downs, the "J-M-U Dukes" cheer and the AC/DC song Hells Bells for third downs. - Daily News-Record
