The game was played at Toyota Field, home of Minor League Baseball's Double-A Rocket City Trash Pandas. Offensive plays were played in the same direction toward the first base dugout. Webb threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ron Wiggins and ran for a 20-yard touchdown as Jacksonville State (6-1, 2-0 Atlantic Sun Conference) stretched their lead to 31-7 with 1:51 remaining before halftime.

Zion Webb fired 11 yards to a diving Sterling Galban in the back corner of the end zone in overtime and Jacksonville State then recovered a Jonathan Murphy fumble on Kennesaw State's first play to wrap up the Gamecocks' first win over the Owls 35-28 in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener Saturday. The Gamecocks spent 17 seasons in the Ohio Valley Conference before joining the ASUN. Jacksonville State outscored the Owls 18-0 in the third quarter and took a 28-21 lead, but Murphy tied the game with a 2-yard run with 3:14 left in regulation. On first down at his own 9, Murphy broke free for a 57-yard run to give Kennesaw State a first down at the Gamecocks' 34, but Nathan Robertson missed a 45-yard field-goal attempt with 19 seconds left.

Kennesaw State denied Jacksonville State an offensive touchdown and took a 21-10 lead into halftime. Amon Scarbrough scored the Gamecocks' lone first-half touchdown on a blocked punt recovered in the end zone. Webb gave the Gamecocks (5-1, 1-0) a 28-21 lead on a 42-yard touchdown pass to Keishoen Jarrett and a toss to Ahmad Edwards for a 2-point conversion. Murphy completed just 4 of 13 attempts for 44 yards and carried 39 times for 134 yards and three touchdowns to lead Kennesaw State (1-3, 0-1). Webb completed 11 of 22 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns with an interception to lead Jacksonville State. - Jacksonville State/AP College Football

Zion Webb ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more to lead Jacksonville State to a 35-17 victory over Davidson on Saturday. Webb finished 9-of-20 passing for 158 yards and an interception. He carried seven times for 55 yards rushing. Matt LaRoche led the Gamecocks with 63 yards rushing on 13 carries. Jacksonville State (2-0) scored three touchdowns in the first 6:06 of the second quarter, with Webb accounting for all three scores. He ran 3 yards for a 14-7 Gamecocks lead, then after a punt he ran or passed for all but five yards in a 10-play, 86-yard drive that ended with his 7-yard run. On the next play from scrimmage, the Gamecocks' Stevonte Tullis recovered a fumble and Webb followed it up with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Pat Jackson for a 28-7 lead. Tullis had two fumble recoveries in the game.

Early in the fourth quarter, Webb's 20-yard touchdown run put Jacksonville State ahead 35-17. Despite the 18-point deficit, Davidson (0-1) stuck with its running game, attempting only eight passes. The Wildcats drove inside the 30 midway through the fourth quarter but a false start and two incomplete passes stalled the drive. Davidson had 62 rushes for 213 yards, led by 76 yards from Mark McCurdy. Jacksonville State defeated Davidson 49-14 in last year's FCS playoffs. This year, the Gamecocks are transitioning to FBS. - Jacksonville State/AP College Football

Quarterback Zion Webb ran for three scores, Jacksonville State scored five unanswered touchdowns and the Gamecocks rallied to a 42-17 victory over Stephen F. Austin in a lightning-shortened FCS Kickoff on Saturday. The game was delayed by lightning with a little more than 13 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and did not resume, making a winner of Rich Rodriguez in his debut as Gamecocks coach.

After their short field goal try was blocked with 3:32 remaining in the second quarter, the Gamecocks, trailing 17-7, forced three-and-out on consecutive SFA possessions and cashed in with two touchdowns. Matt LaRoche covered 8 yards for the first of those scores and Webb ran 4 yards for the other. The Gamecocks continued to click on offense in the third quarter, driving 82 yards for one touchdown and 52 yards for another. Webb scored both of those touchdowns on 2-yard runs. Cole Fuller recovered a fumble by the Lumberjacks punter in the end zone for another third-quarter touchdown and the lead was 42-17 heading to the weather-delayed fourth period. Webb completed 9 of 15 passes for 160 yards to go with 59 rushing yards on 11 carries. Anwar Lewis carried 12 times for 100 yards. - AP College Football

Jacksonville State punter Jack Dawson was arrested Monday on multiple charges of assault against a former teammate, including one involving sexual assault, Troy Municipal Court Supervision Officer David Hennigan confirmed to the Montgomery Advertiser. Dawson turned himself in to authorities and was released on a signature bond. Dawson, who was served a summons July 29 at the Jacksonville State football practice field, is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 5. Dawson faced three warrants for his arrest related to separate incidents that allegedly took place during the fall of 2020 when Dawson played at Troy, according to Hennigan. Dawson transferred to Jacksonville State after the 2020 season and was the Gamecocks' starting punter during the 2021 season. He was listed on the Gamecocks' roster as of Monday afternoon. - USAToday.com

Virginia Tech wide receiver Dallan Wright suffered a season-ending injury during fall camp. Coach Brent Pry announced the injury after the team's practice on Wednesday and told reporters the receiver had surgery earlier this week. "We wish him the best, he was really having a nice camp," Pry said. "I'm excited about his future. He's in great spirits. Obviously our medical team is taking great care of him. He's on the road recovery." Wright didn't participate in the two practices the media were allowed to see portions of last week and didn't attend fan day.

The injury comes at a receivers position that was already low on scholarship players. Wright's injury leaves the Hokies with nine scholarship receivers, a number that includes two true freshmen (Tucker Holloway and Xayvion Bradshaw) and former running back Cole Beck, who spent last year away from football. Wright, a 6-foot-1, 176-pounder from South Carolina, was a three-star prospect out of Saluda High School and a late addition to the 2020 signing class. - Roanoke Times
