CJ Beasley ran 24 yards for the go-ahead touchdown in the final minute, leaping over a defender on the way to the end zone, and Coastal Carolina defeated Georgia Southern 34-30 on Saturday night in a game that saw three lead changes in the final six minutes. Beasley's run capped a 485-yard offensive performance by the Chanticleers (5-0, 2-0 Sun Belt) that was highlighted by Grayson McCall's four touchdowns - three passing and one on the ground. McCall hit Jared Brown for 61 yards and a touchdown with 5:55 remaining in the fourth quarter that gave the Chanticleers their first lead - 28-27 - since early in the second quarter. After the Eagles regained the lead on a field by Alex Raynor, McCall led the Chanticleers 82 yards in 1:23, twice converting on third down prior to Beasley's go-ahead score with 38 seconds remaining.

On Georgia Southern's final possession, Coastal's JT Killen had a sack and Kyle Vantrease threw incomplete three times. Vantrease finished with 26 completions in 43 attempts for 284 yards. He threw two TD passes but had two turnovers - a fumble and an interception. Jalen White had 145 yards rushing with one touchdown on 18 carries for the Eagles (3-2, 0-1). McCall was 23-of-34 passing for 335 yards, Brown had five catches for 139 yards and Beasley 64 rushing yards on 12 carries. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

Darren Grainger ran for a touchdown and threw for another as Georgia State repelled Army on Saturday for a 31-14 win, the Panthers' first of the season. After a Michael Hayes field goal opened the scoring, a shanked punt gave the ball back to the Panthers (1-4) at the Army 38 with Grainger scoring on a 13-yard keeper. Jamyest Williams' 33-yard burst up the middle was good for a 17-0 halftime lead after Army (1-3) turned the ball over on downs. After Army closed within three in the second half, the Panthers scored two late touchdowns. Army scored on its first drive of the second half on Tyhier Tyler's 1-yard run. A Panthers field-goal attempt went off the right upright and Tyler scored on a 5-yard keeper on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Army got the ball back after a fumble but the Black Knights were stopped on fourth-and-goal from the Georgia State 1. The Panthers had to punt from their end zone but Army, after taking over from its 45, failed on a fake punt on fourth-and-11 with the Panthers then clinching the win on Grainger's 57-yard touchdown pass to Ja'Cyais Credle with three minutes left. Georgia State's Tucker Gregg added a 56-yard touchdown, his school-record 20th rushing score to break a tie with Tra Barnett (2016-19). Gainger threw for 157 yards and ran for another 48. Gregg rushed for 124 yards on 16 carries and Williams had 106 yards on 12. Jordan Veneziale sparked the Georgia Southern defense with two fumble recoveries, one coming deep in Panthers territory in the final minute of the first half. Georgia State's defense kept losing its impact players Saturday against Charlotte. All-conference linebacker Blake Carroll suffered a serious lower body injury, was carted to the locker room and came back to the sidelines on crutches. Blake Carroll has become one of the more valuable members of the Georgia State defense. A senior outside linebacker from Lawrenceville, Carroll was an All-Sun Belt selection last year and was named to the preseason all-conference team earlier this month. Not bad for guy whose career almost didn't get off the ground. When he arrived at Georgia State as a freshman from Mountain View High School, Carroll and coach Shawn Elliott didn't really see eye-to-eye about a lot of things. It's the sort of clash that easily could have led to internal strife or a move to the transfer portal.

"I just had to realize I'm part of a team, and I'm here for the team. That's all I had to adjust to." "Blake came in, and he was hard-headed," Elliott said. "He didn't like academics. He didn't like structure. He didn't like discipline. I guess he was used to getting rubbed on the back and told how great he was, and I was a different guy, so he and I butted heads early in his career." Carroll admitted as much. But he also was smart enough to recognize the need to reassess the situation and make the appropriate changes if he wanted to stick around and contribute. "I will say that coming in, everybody was the guy in high school," Carroll said. "I just had to humble myself. I wouldn't say I thought I was bigger than the team, but I did think I was going to play a bigger role than I did at the time. I just had to realize I'm part of a team, and I'm here for the team. Georgia State returns one of the nation's top running back tandems in All-Sun Belt Conference seniors Tucker Gregg and Jamyest Williams, headlining a talented position group for the Panthers, who open the season Sept. 3 at South Carolina. Under sixth-year head coach Shawn Elliott, Georgia State Looking to build on its streak of three straight bowl berths. The Panthers return 18 starters from last year's squad that won a school-record eight games, capped by a dominating 52-10 win over Ball State in the TaxAct Camellia Bowl for the program's second straight bowl victory. A big part of that success has been the Georgia State rushing attack as the duo of Gregg and Williams combined for 1,812 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2021, helping the Panthers rank No. 8 in FBS in rushing with 226.4 yards per game.

After leading the team with 953 yards (third in the Sun Belt) and nine touchdowns last fall, Gregg is the No. 3 rusher in GSU history with 1,560 yards. Williams adds speed and explosiveness, rushing for 859 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging a school-record 6.71 yards per carry, the sixth-best mark in FBS. The former cornerback has gained 1,112 yards in 21 games since moving to offense midway through the 2020 season. But another name to watch in the backfield is junior Marcus Carroll, who had a strong spring, when he was named the team's Top Offensive Player of the spring. 2022 PRESEASON ALL-PATRIOT LEAGUE FOOTBALL TEAM (COACHES): DB Gavin Pringle, Bucknell, Sr.,...Pringle started the first five games of the 2021 season before missing time with injury, but the Baltimore, Md. native tied for the team lead with five pass breakups and registered 18 tackles while playing at strong safety and cornerback. Pringle was voted to the All-Patriot League Team as both a freshman and sophomore, earning First Team honors in the 2021 spring season after posting 21 tackles and 16 solo stops. He logged six tackles and an interception in the Patriot League championship game and started all four contests.

As a rookie in 2019, Pringle started the final seven games of the season and recorded 11 pass breakups. His 57 tackles (41 solo) ranked third among Bison defensive backs. In the 2019 season opener at Temple, Pringle returned his first career interception 36 yards for a touchdown. He later ran back a fumble 55 yards for a score in a win over Georgetown. Georgia State, which has played in three straight bowl games and four in five seasons under coach Shawn Elliott, placed eight players on the 2022 preseason All-Sun Belt Conference team. Three-time all-conference selection Malik Sumter, who's also on the watch list for the Rimington Trophy presented annually to college football's best center, earned first-team honors along with Panthers defenders Blake Carroll (linebacker) and Antavious Lane (defensive back).

Five Georgia State players were named to the second team: running back Tucker Gregg, offensive linemen Travis Glover and Pat Bartlett, tight end Aubry Payne and defensive lineman Thomas Gore. Georgia State, which ended the 2021 season with a 51-20 win over Ball State in the Camellia Bowl, opens the 2022 season Sept. 3 at South Carolina. Darren Grainger and Georgia State saved their best for the last game of the season - and especially for a thoroughly dominating third quarter. Grainger passed for 203 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 122 yards and a fourth TD to lead Georgia State to a 51-20 victory over Ball State in the Camellia Bowl on Saturday. The Panthers (8-5) finished with their seventh win in eight games, dominated the lone bowl played on Christmas Day and set a season record for wins. Coach Shawn Elliott called it "the best performance Georgia State football has had this year." "I think we finished Christmas Day with one of the best presents we could have ever asked for and that's a commanding, dominating win," Elliott said. It was the first time the program had won back-to-back bowl games.

His team was up 20-13 at halftime but scored the next 31 points. Grainger completed 15 of 19 passes and carried 11 times, including a play fake midway through the third quarter when he scampered 34 yards untouched into the end zone. It was the first 100-yard rushing game of his career, and he was named the game MVP. Ball State (6-7) couldn't summon up many big plays after Drew Plitt's 56-yard touchdown bomb to Jayshon Jackson for an early lead.
