  Syracuse receiver Sharod Johnson will seek a transfer to play out his sixth season at another school in 2022. Johnson submitted his name into the NCAA's transfer portal, according to multiple recruiting sites that track the growing number of transfers around the nation. By entering the portal, coaches can formally recruit him. Johnson is a graduate transfer with one season of eligibility remaining. A starter this past season, he caught 14 passes for 184 yards.   Gunnar Holmberg tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns and threw for a fifth as Duke overcame Kansas for a 52-33 victory Saturday, its third straight win. The Blue Devils (3-1) struck for 21 points during a six-minute span of the third quarter, taking the lead on the way to eclipsing their 2020 win total. Holmberg's scoring runs came from 4, 1, 3 and 13 yards. He threw for 328 yards, completing 22 of 29 passes.

Holmberg became the eighth Duke player with four rushing touchdowns in a game and the first since quarterback Brandon Connette ran for four in 2013. "It's part of the game plan," Holmberg said of his 17 carries for 88 yards. "The O-line did their part. The receivers (blocked well) on the perimeter." Holmberg needed brief medical attention following his final TD run. He said he just had the wind knocked out of him. Duke's Mataeo Durant ran for 124 yards on 21 carries, including a 57-yard touchdown for the game's first points. Jake Bobo made seven catches for 105 yards. "We've got a lot of weapons and we've got to continue to grow and get better," Duke coach David Cutcliffe said.   Duke scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and did all its scoring in the first half, then held off a Northwestern comeback to earn a 30-23 victory in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon. "I would like to stop doing what losing teams do," Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "Losing teams turn the ball over. Losing teams have self-inflicted wounds. Losing teams give up explosive plays. Losing teams have communication issues. That's why you lose games. This is not hard. I'm not trying to discredit Duke, but we gift-wrapped it for them." The Blue Devils were efficient on both sides of the ball early on, scoring on six of their first eight possessions behind Gunnar Holmberg, who completed 31 of 44 passes for a career-high 314 yards and a touchdown. "Gunnar is playing pretty dang well. Gunnar wants to win, and Gunnar is a humble and an unselfish player," Duke coach David Cutcliffe said. "He's a good thrower. But also, Northwestern did crowd the line of scrimmage. There's no reason to be hard-headed." Meanwhile, the Blue Devils' defense forced Northwestern (1-2) into a punt or a turnover on its first seven drives.   D'Vonte Price ran for 165 yards and three touchdowns on just five carries and Florida International breezed to a 48-10 victory over Long Island in a season opener on Thursday night. Price accounted for all 69 yards on the opening drive for the Panthers - carrying three times and capping the drive with an 8-yard TD. Price scored on the second play of the second drive, running 68 yards for a score. His final carry came in the second quarter and resulted in a 28-yard TD and a 28-0 lead.

Max Bortenschlager completed 14 of 17 passes for 266 yards and two TDs with one interception for FIU. He had scoring strikes of 52 yards to Bryce Singleton and a 12-yarder to Tyrese Chambers. Singleton finished with 149 yards on six catches. Camden Orth completed 15 of 30 passes for 197 yards and a score for the Sharks, an FCS school.   The veteran won the job. Max Bortenschlager, the Maryland Terrapins transfer who is entering his sixth collegiate season, is expected to be FIU's starting quarterback when the Panthers open the season Thursday night against visiting Long Island. Bortenschlager, who has made 11 starts - nine at Maryland and two at FIU - edged second-year freshman Haden Carlson, who has yet to take a college snap.

Kaylan Wiggins, who is in his fifth season at FIU, and true freshman Grayson James provide further depth. "Max is the guy who has been doing a majority of the work with the starters," FIU coach Butch Davis told the Herald on Friday. "Haden is working as the backup, but all four quarterbacks have improved significantly. "We anticipate Max will be our starting quarterback unless something changes in the next four or five days, which I don't think it will."   FEB 22 SOCON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Donovan Manuel, ETSU, R-So., LB, Ellenwood, Ga.,...Linebacker Donovan Manuel had an all-around productive day for the ETSU defense in the Bucs' win over Samford. The redshirt sophomore from Ellenwood, Georgia, had nine tackles on the day (six solo), including a pair of sacks for 22 lost yards. Manuel, who forced a fumble on one of those sacks, also picked off a Samford pass in ETSU territory with just 8 seconds left to seal the win.   FIU has added two linebackers from the transfer portal: Hal Vinson of Texas State and Eric Mitchell of UCF. Vinson was seventh on his team in tackles and third in tackles for losses last year. In 35 games at UCF, Mitchell had 18 tackles for losses, five sack and one interception. He was sixth on the team in tackles this past season. - Miami Herald

  Because of an NCAA this-year-only rule that has to do with the pandemic, seniors can return to play one more season in 2021. The Panthers have 20 key seniors, and, so far, three of them have announced they are going to try for the NFL next season: left tackle D'Antne Demery, guard/center Shane McGough and defensive end Noah Curtis. Demery is FIU's top NFL Draft prospect, and he is followed on that list by running back D'vonte Price, who announced last week that he will return to the Panthers.
