  Layne Hatcher threw three touchdown passes, Calvin Hill rushed for 210 yards and a score and Texas State rolled to a 41-12 victory over Florida International on Saturday night. Hatcher threw scoring strikes of 67 yards to freshman Charles Brown in the first quarter and 52 yards to Javen Banks in the second to lead Texas State (1-1) to a 20-6 lead at halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, Hatcher connected with Ashtyn Hawkins for a 7-yard TD to push the Bobcats' lead to 27-6 early in the final period. Hill ran to paydirt from 25 yards out and Kordell Rogers returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown to cap the scoring. Hatcher completed 15 of 30 passes for 226 yards with one interception. Hill did his damage on 28 rushes. Grayson James threw for 196 yards on 30-of-47 passing with two picks for Florida International (1-1).   Just one year after it was picked to finish first in the Mid-American Conference football preseason media poll, Ball State finds itself with a much different outlook heading into the 2022 season. The Cardinals were picked to finish last in the MAC West Division in the preseason poll, released Tuesday ahead of the MAC football kickoff. Ball State finished only in front of Akron (28 points) in overall points with 42. This comes after a season in which saw Ball State appeared in its second straight bowl game and finished with a 6-7 overall (4-4 MAC) overall record after a lopsided, 51-20, defeat in the Camellia Bowl to Georgia State.   Heading into his first season at Texas State, junior quarterback Layne Hatcher went to work with one of the legendary families in football. Hatcher attended the Manning Passing Academy over the weekend, a four-day camp that's held annually at Nicholls State for football players between the ages of those entering the eighth grade and seniors-to-be in high school. Each year, around 40 college quarterbacks are invited to the camp to help coach alongside Archie, Cooper, Peyton, and Eli Manning. The Bobcat signal-caller was one of the few invited, joining Georgia's Stetson Bennett, Alabama's Bryce Young and Ohio State's CJ Stroud among others.

"You're part camp counselor," Hatcher said. "And then in the afternoons, you're working out with the Manning brothers and they're coaching you up and then you have some social events, networking stuff, meeting a lot of QB trainers that are across the country working out with the Mannings. You get to have kind of an all-around experience of coaching and working out and then meeting people and then having, like, just meetings about football and talking ball." The Little Rock, Ark. native went to the camp for the first time last year. He said he was a bit nervous, not knowing what to expect out of the experience. He mostly just listened, trying to soak everything in.   Nine Ball State football players earned preseason All-Mid-American Conference recognition in Phil Steele's 2022 College Football Preview and Athlon Sports' preseason magazine, respectively. Phil Steele's preseason All-MAC picks included wide receiver Jayshon Jackson and offensive lineman Corey Stewart, who earned second team honors. Amos was a part of Villanova's 2017 class, recording 149 tackles, eight interceptions, 25 passes defensed and three forced fumbles in three seasons.
