Matthew Hill will be going up for interceptions rather than receptions this year now that he has transitioned from a wide receiver into a defensive back. When Hill first arrived at Auburn, he came in as a four-star wide receiver out of Snelville, Georgia. He was ranked the 13th best player in Georgia and the 17th best receiver in the country. Hill hit the field as a true freshman with a fumble recovery and 22-yard rush against Alabama State and a carry in the Music City Bowl in 2018. Since he didn't play more than four games, he was able to take that year as a redshirt. Hill didn't record any catches.

Coach Gus Malzahn said in the spring that they would give Hill opportunities on defense, but spring never happened. When the roster came out, Hill was officially listed as a defensive back. Based on what safety Smoke Monday has seen, Hill is going to be able to help the Tigers out. "I feel like Matthew Hill is going to be a big contributor to the defense," Monday said. Despite two years on offense, Hill shows a lot of confidence when he steps onto the field as a defender. He's very smart and is learning the playbook well. Hill's athleticism has also helped in the transition. Monday said he's fast and has nice hips. Auburn's defensive backs learn to play all over the field, so Hill is getting reps at both cornerback and safety. In the few days of practice that Auburn's had, Hill has looked good at both positions. - Birmingham News
