Michigan linebacker Devin Gil has decided to play his final year of college football closer to home. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native announced on social media Tuesday that he plans to transfer to the University of South Florida. Gil, who posted a graphic of him in a Bulls uniform, expects to graduate from Michigan this spring, making him immediately eligible to play in 2020. "I'm coming home," a message reads on the graphic, which includes an aerial photo of Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, where USF's football team plays its games. Gil announced in March plans to enter the transfer portal, thanking head coach Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Don Brown for giving him an opportunity in Ann Arbor.

The 6-foot-1, 236-pound Gil appeared in 39 games from 2017 to 2019, starting 14 of them, including all 13 games at weak-side linebacker as a sophomore. But his playing time fell off last fall, relegated mainly to special teams and as a rotational fill-in at linebacker. He totaled 47 tackles (four for a loss) and 1 1/2 sacks for the Wolverines. A former three-star recruit, Gil arrived at Michigan in 2016 from Flanagan High School, where he was coached by Devin Bush Sr., who later took a job at Michigan. Bush departed the program in February to become the director of recruiting at Ole Miss. - Ann Arbor News
