Michigan sophomore receiver Andrel Anthony Jr. becomes the latest Wolverine to enter his name in the transfer portal. Anthony, who announced his decision to transfer Wednesday night, is the ninth Michigan player since early December to leave the Wolverin es. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder out of East Lansing High had only seven catches for 80 yards and a touchdown this season. As a freshman, he had 12 catches for 248 yards and three touchdowns, including his career day in a loss at Michigan State when he had six catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Anthony is the fourth Michigan player this week to enter his name in the transfer portal. He joins: Julius Welschof, Taylor Upshaw, Deuce Spurlock, Cade McNamara, Erick All, Louis Hansen, George Rooks and Ala n Bowman. - Detroit News

Eight scholarship receivers saw playing time last season, and Michigan is set to return seven of them, including Andrel Anthony, back in 2022. In addition, the Wolverines welcome in a trio of true freshmen who Jim Harbaugh has referred to as a collective "freak show." What that means for playing time remains unclear, but what is clear is that Michigan is trying to find other roles for some of them. Mike Sainristil spent a good portion of the spring playing in the defensive backfield, while A.J. Henning may be incorporated into the running game this fall. That should open the door for more opportunities for guys like Anthony, whose straight-line speed and athleticism make him one of the more intriguing receivers on the team.Both he and Ronnie Bel l, who returns for his senior season after tearing his ACL last fall, both give Michigan playmakers in the passing game, something the offense was drastically lacking in 2021. It remains unknown how Bell will look in his return (the hope, of course, is t hat he's back to his pre-injured self), but Anthony might be the receiver with the greatest upside in the room. His performance last October at Michigan State proved that, along with his 35-yard touchdown catch against Georgia in the Orange Bowl. Playing on the big stage doesn't seem to faze Anthony, a tell-tale sign that he's ready for a larger role. And with an easy non-conference schedule on the docket, the Wolverines will have an opportunity to get many of their receivers - Anthony especially - invo lved early. - Ann Arbor News

Michigan's football team is seven practices into fall camp, and there is a freshman receiver who continues to capture the attention of head coach Jim Harbaugh. "Andrel Anthony continues to make a play a practice," Harbaugh told reporters outside Schembec hler Hall on Friday. "He's on a streak. It's like a Lou Gehrig hitting streak. He would do it in spring ball where, 'wait for it; it's going to happen,' and he makes it. It is just a play a practice that's a big chunk variety. He continues to be really g ood." The Wolverines haven't been shy about playing freshmen receivers since offensive coordinator Josh Gattis took over before the 2019 season. Mike Sainristil, Giles Jackson and Cornelius Johnson combined for 21 catches and 348 receiving yards in 2019, while Roman Wilson and A.J. Henning combined for 15 receptions for 181 yards in six games last season.Michigan should be deeper at the position in 2021 with Ronnie Bell, Johnson, Sainristil, Wilson, Henning and graduate transfer Daylen Baldwin en tering the mix, but Anthony could find himself climbing the depth chart with a strong fall camp. The three-star prospect out of East Lansing High was an important recruit for the Wolverines last cycle. Albeit ranked as the No. 527 player nationally in th e 247Sports Composite, he brings size (6-foot-2, 180 pounds) and speed to Michigan's receiver room. On Wednesday, senior safety Brad Hawkins said Anthony was one of the three fastest receivers on the team, along with Henning and Wilson.
