2023 ALL-BIG TEN HONORABLE MENTION: Donaven McCulley,...In his second season at wide receiver, McCulley started 11 of 12 games on the outside and caught a team-best 48 passes for 644 yards. His six touchdown grabs were the most on the team and five came over the last five weeks of the season. He caught 60% of his targets during the season with his 10 contested catches ranked No. 3 among Big Ten wideouts in 2023. His 48 grabs were tied for No. 10 in the Big Ten, his six touchdown catches ranked tied for No. 6 in the conference and a 13.4 yards per catch average ranked tied for No. 14 on the B1G charts. His six touchdowns led the team in 2023 and are the most by a wide receiver since Ty Fryfogle caught seven in 2020. His 48 catches are the most since Whop Philyor hauled in 70 during the 2019 season. - Indiana Football

  07/18/22 - WR Donaven McCulleySr/2025, Indiana, 6-4, 200 (DS#19 WR) + More +

Indiana coach Tom Allen has been hosting players at his house by position group this summer and posting group photos on his Twitter account. On Thursday night, he hosted the wide receivers, which led to him formally confirming former Lawrence North star Donaven McCulley has joined that position group after starting four games at quarterback for IU last season. The move was initially reported in June when IU play-by-play man Don Fischer said McCulley would move during a radio interview.

Allen told IndyStar the decision to move was actually McCulley's idea. The 6-5, 210-pounder has had an interest in the position for years, Allen said, and believed it would be his quickest path to playing time this season with there being extensive competition at quarterback, with the addition of Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak and return of a healthy Jack Tuttle. Allen said he was thrilled with the move, as McCulley's length, athleticism and skill set gives him the opportunity to make an immediate impact. The Hoosiers lost their two starting outside wide receivers in Ty Fryfogle and Miles Marshall. McCulley is expected to compete for those spots along with North Carolina transfer Emery Simmons and junior college transfer Cam Camper among others. - Indianapolis Star/News

After being forced by injuries into starting at quarterback as a true freshman, Indiana sophomore and former Lawrence North star Donaven McCulley may be making a position change. IU play-by-play announcer Don Fischer appeared on Indiana Sports Talk on 107.5 FM The Fan last week and was asked about the quarterback position. Fischer said the Hoosiers had decided to move McCulley to receiver. An IU spokesman said Friday the program would have no comment and would neither confirm nor deny that McCulley had been moved.

He is still listed as a quarterback on IU's roster. "They've taken Donaven McCulley out of the quarterback role and they moved him to wide receiver," Fischer said on the radio show. "I think you're going to see some spectacular things out of this kid before he's done at Indiana. He's a terrific athlete. He's 6-5. He can really, really run. That's one thing he did last year when he was called upon to play at quarterback." Without addressing McCulley's status specifically, IU coach Tom Allen said in an interview with the Herald-Times and IndyStar in May the quarterback competition had been narrowed to two men - Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak and fifth-year senior Jack Tuttle. - Indianapolis Star/News

Discussions of Indiana's quarterback situation typically center on Michael Penix, and understandably so. The 6-foot-3 junior threw for more than 1,600 yards and 14 touchdowns before his season was derailed by a torn ACL in November. But coach Tom Allen spotlighted another signal caller following Monday's practice: freshman Donaven McCulley. "I've really been encouraged by his growth," Allen said of the former Lawrence North star. "Even today we were able to isolate some of the things we do and could see his talent. That's shown up since the beginning...He's a very gifted player." McCulley's initial splash shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

One of the Hoosiers' top targets from the class of 2021, the four-star recruit threw for more than 2,500 yards and 22 touchdowns last fall to lead Lawrence North to its first winning season since 2005. For his career, the prolific dual-threat quarterback accumulated 6,211 passing yards, 1,274 rushing yards and 47 touchdowns. Scouting reports cited McCulley's sizable frame (6-foot-5), athleticism and arm strength as three of his biggest strengths in high school - Allen Trieu of 247 sports compares him to Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Joshua Dobbs - and he's only gotten stronger since his arrival at IU, weighing in at 215 pounds. That's a "significant difference" from when he first started, Allen noted. "When you walk out there, you notice (McCulley) and the way he moves," said Allen, who also cited the freshman's quick release. "He's just trying to learn the offense." - Indianapolis Star/News
