Gavin Williams, Northern Illinois, Player News

Five new football players started classes earlier this week and officially joined the Huskies via the transfer portal, NIU announced on Wednesday. One of two former Power 5 players coming onboard, Williams had 43 carries for 138 yards and no touchdowns last year. He had 65 carries for 305 yards the year before and is still searching for his first career touchdown. - DeKalb Daily Chronicle

Iowa running back Gavin Williams plans to enter the transfer portal, he said in a tweet Friday afternoon. "To my teammates, coaches and training staff, thank you for all of our support throughout my time at Iowa," Williams said in the tweet. "The connections I've made during my time here will truly last a lifetime." Williams began the season as Iowa's No. 1 running back, but injury problems and the rise of true freshman Kaleb Johnson at his position limited Williams' productivity.

He had 43 carries for 138 yards while averaging 3.2 yards per carry in 2022 - a significant drop-off from 65 carries for 305 yards and 4.7 yards per carry last year. He was essentially Iowa's third running back by the midpoint of the season behind Kaleb Johnson and Leshon Williams. Jaziun Patterson, a true freshman, could potentially take that third spot. Arlen Harris Jr., a running back in the transfer portal from Stanford, said earlier in the week on Twitter he will be visiting Iowa this weekend. - The Gazette

Iowa's spring football practice had a different feel for sophomore running back Gavin Williams. For the last two years he patiently waited behind veteran backs for his opportunity. After a breakout game in the Citrus Bowl and a few departures out of the room, he found himself getting the bulk of the first-team reps during spring. "It's a great feeling," Williams said. "Everybody wants to be the star, you know, and sometimes you get here and you kind of lose sight of that because you might be buried in the depth chart or a number of other things. And I just feel like it taught me to just put my head down and keep working every day and eventually I will reap the benefits."

The same can be said for fellow sophomore Leshon Williams. Like Gavin (no relation), Williams redshirted in 2020 and didn't see much action in 2021 until the Citrus Bowl, where the two combined for 173 yards. Due to an injury to redshirt freshman Deavin Hilson, the two Williamses were the only healthy scholarship running backs during spring practice and continued their bowl game momentum. "I view it as though I have two top guys," running backs coach Ladell Betts said during spring. The sophomore duo entered summer conditioning as Iowa's top two options for the 2022 season, but the room is much deeper than it was during spring. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Poised for a 2022 standout season: RB Gavin Williams, sophomore. He looks ready to take over for Tyler Goodson, who declared for the NFL draft after leading the Hawkeyes in rushing three straight years. Williams' playing time increased the second half of the season and he ran for 98 yards on 16 carries against Kentucky in the Citrus Bowl. - AP College Football
