Aidan Chiles, Michigan State, Player News

Aidan Chiles completed 22 of 29 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown and also ran 76 yards Saturday to lead Michigan State to a 41-24 victory over Youngstown State. The Spartans (3-0) are now 10-0 against FCS opponents. Jonathan Smith became the first head coach in Michigan State history to open his first two seasons with consecutive 3-0 starts. Michigan State wide receiver Nick Marsh, who had six catches for 94 yards in the first half, was on the sideline without his helmet and a wrap around his knee during the second quarter. He did not play in the second half and was not on the field or visible on the sideline.

The Spartans built a 31-10 lead in the third quarter. Youngstown State (2-1) clawed back to 34-24 with Beau Brungard throwing a 19-yard touchdown pass to Kylon Wilson with 3:05 left but that was as close as it could get down the stretch. Brungard, who last week ran for four touchdowns and set a Missouri Valley Conference record for quarterbacks with 264 yards, was limited to 17 yards rushing and 242 yards passing. Jaden Gilbert led the Penguins in rushing with seven carries for 72 yards and a touchdown. - Michigan State/AP College Football

Aidan Chiles ran for a 3-yard touchdown and threw the winning 2-point conversion to Omari Kelly in double overtime Saturday to give Michigan State a 42-40 victory over Boston College. Boston College's Turbo Richard ran 8 yards for a touchdown in the second overtime but Boston College (1-1) failed to convert the 2-point conversion. Chiles then followed with the scoring run and the throw to Kelly to seal the win for the Spartans (2-0). He completed 19 of 29 passes for 231 yards and a career-high four touchdowns.

Michigan State scored on the first possession of overtime on Chiles' 5-yard toss to Jaye Coyne, but the Eagles' Dylan Lonergan threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Franklin to force a second OT. Boston College's Luca Lombardo sent the game into overtime when he made a 38-yard field goal with 76 seconds left to tie the game at 27-all. After throwing for 268 yards against Fordham in his first career game at Boston College, Lonergan completed 34 of 45 passes for 390 yards and four touchdowns. - Michigan State/AP College Football

Kay'Ron Lynch-Adams had a 63-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter and Michigan State barely beat Florida Atlantic 16-10 Friday night. The Spartans (1-0) were sloppy in coach Jonathan Smith's debut. Aidan Chiles threw an interception on the game's opening snap, recovered his fumble to end the second drive and Montorie Foster Jr. lost the football on Michigan State's third drive. It didn't go much smoother in the second half. Chiles had a chance to put the Spartans ahead by more than two touchdowns late in the third quarter, but Ed Woods stepped in front of a pass in the flat at the Florida Atlantic 2 and returned it 58 yards. "I'm happy with the win," Chiles said. "I'm not happy with how I performed." Cam Fancher converted a fourth-and-1 with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jayshon Platt, cutting the Owls' deficit to six points.

Smith went for it on fourth-and-1 from the Florida Atlantic 9 on the ensuing drive, instead of kicking a short field goal for a nine-point lead, and Lynch-Adams was stopped short on a run early in the fourth quarter. "That was probably overly aggressive," said Smith, adding in hindsight kicking for a two-score lead may have been the wise move. Smith's defense responded, forcing the Owls to turn it over on downs at the Michigan State 41 with 6:53 remaining. Fancher later came up short on a fourth-and-1 run near midfield and nearly drew a targeting penalty that didn't stand after review. The Spartans, though, were pushed back 30 yards by two penalties, including one for unnecessary roughness on Jordan Turner for hitting Fancher, after he was ruled down. - AP College Football
