WEEK 12 ACC SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK: Aidan Birr, R-Jr., PK, Georgia Tech (Kennedale, Texas),...Matched a career high with three field goals made, including the game-winner with 11 seconds to go that lifted Georgia Tech to a 36-34 win over Boston College...On a cold, windy day in New England, Birr made field goals from 34, 26 and 23 yards and also made 4-of-4 extra points to account for 13 points in the two-point victory...Eight of his 13 points came in the Yellow Jackets' 19-point fourth quarter, as they erased an 11-point deficit in the final period...The game-winning field goal with 11 seconds to go was Birr's second of the season and third of his career...Also played a big part in Boston College having an average starting field position at its own 21-yard line by sending 6-of-7 kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks...Marks his second ACC Specialist of the Week honor this season. - ACC Football

Aidan Birr kicked a 23-yard field goal with 11 seconds left and No. 14 Georgia Tech rallied for a 36-34 victory over Boston College on Saturday to remain tied for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Haynes King completed 26 of 34 passes for 371 yards and a touchdown as the Yellow Jackets (9-1, 6-1, No. 16 CFP) stayed even with No. 20 Virginia (No. 19 CFP) atop the league standings. Dylan Lonergan went 26 of 40 for 362 yards and two TDs for the Eagles (1-10, 0-7), who lost their 10th straight game. With a solid shot at the ACC championship game and potentially the College Football Playoff, Georgia Tech fell behind early in the second half and trailed 28-17 late in the third quarter. After taking the lead, the Yellow Jackets fell behind again 34-33 when Turbo Richard scored on a 43-yard run up the middle. But the Eagles failed on the 2-point try.

King then marched Georgia Tech 69 yards in 13 plays before Birr's winning kick. The game ended when Lonergan's Hail Mary was batted down near the goal line as time expired. Jordan Allen broke free down the left sideline for a 54-yard touchdown with just over six minutes left, moving the Yellow Jackets ahead 33-28. Georgia Tech had clawed back and cut it to 28-26 on Jamal Haynes' 2-yard score with 7 1/2 minutes to play. But lining up with an unbalanced formation, King was stopped short on the 2-point try. Jordan McDonald's 14-yard TD run pushed BC ahead 21-14 on its first drive of the second half. Birr's 34-yard field goal sliced it to 21-17 before Lonergan engineered a 75-yard drive, capping it off by hitting Reed Harris, who caught a short pass before breaking a couple of tackles and going in for an 18-yard score. Coming off an upset loss at North Carolina State two weeks ago, the Yellow Jackets grabbed a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter when Malik Rutherford caught a short pass near the line of scrimmage and burst free for a 71-yard TD. - Georgia Tech/AP College Football

WEEK 3 ACC SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK: Aidan Birr, R-Jr., PK, Georgia Tech (Kennedale, Texas),...Was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals, including a game-winning, school-record-tying 55-yarder as time expired that lifted Georgia Tech to a 24-21 win over No. 12 Clemson...His 55-yard field goal was Georgia Tech's longest field goal since David Bell matched the school record versus Georgia in 1986...His game-winning field goal was just the sixth walk-off field goal in Georgia Tech program history and the first since his own 44-yard walk-off kick in the Yellow Jackets' 24-21 win over No. 10 Florida State on August 24, 2024, in Dublin, Ireland...He was also good from 40 and 42 yards for the contest. - ACC Football

  06/09/22 - K Aidan BirrrJr/2027, Georgia Tech, 6-1, 205 (DS#4 K) + More +

Georgia Tech incoming freshman kicker Aidan Birr will have to wait a year to earn a spot in the Yellow Jackets lineup. Birr revealed in a social media post Tuesday that he had suffered a torn ACL in April, and he added an image of his right leg following surgery. "Road to recovery starts today," Birr wrote. "I'm coming back 10x harder!" It's conceivable that Birr could be cleared for spring practice after the 2022 season.

After Birr signed with Tech in December, it was anticipated that he would compete with Jude Kelley and Gavin Stewart for the placekicking and kickoff jobs. A year ago, grad transfer Brent Cimaglia took field goals and extra points and Stewart handled kickoffs. Birr was named all-state in Texas as a junior, earned honorable-mention honors as a senior and was also ranked the No. 11 kicker in the class nationally (247Sports Composite). Last year, Stewart and Kelley were both 0-for-1 on field-goal tries. Stewart recorded 33 touchbacks on 55 kickoffs, a 61.2% touchback rate. It was the highest rate by a Tech kicker since Harrison Butker's 74% average in 2016. - Atlanta Journal Constitution
