 Devontae Houston, East Tennessee State, Player News


  Devontae Houston ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns and East Tennessee State beat Samford 38-14 on Saturday. The Buccaneers (5-5, 3-3 Southern Conference) totaled 600 yards with 363 through the air and 237 on the ground. ETSU's Jacolby Criswell threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns, hitting Karim Page for 26 yards in the first quarter and tight end Charlie Browder from 10 yards in the third. Backup Ephraim Floyd connected with Xavier Gaillardetz for a 70-yard score on his only attempt. Gaillardetz finished with three catches for 113 yards, and Jeremiah Harrison added four receptions for 95.

East Tennessee State opened with Houston's 45-yard touchdown run at 13:40 of the first quarter, added Floyd's 70-yarder 36 seconds later, then made it 21-0 on Criswell's strike to Page. The Buccaneers led 24-7 at halftime and pushed it to 38-7 in the third on Browder's touchdown and Houston's second scoring run, a 40-yarder with 9:57 left in the quarter. Samford's (1-9, 1-7) Quincy Crittendon threw a 20-yard touchdown to C.J. Evans in the first quarter and Brady Stober added a 25-yard touchdown to Calvin Jones late in the fourth. Jones caught five passes for 54 yards and Sam Pickett III had three receptions for 90.   Devontae Houston recorded the only two touchdowns for East Tennessee St. in a 14-10 win over Wofford on Saturday. Houston, who scored from 28 yards and 6 yards out in the first quarter, led the team with 94 yards. Quarterback Cade McNamara was injured on the last play of the first quarter. His brother, Jake, stepped under center and recorded 97 passing yards and played the rest of the game. McNamara went 12-for-13 with 103 yards before leaving the game. Wofford (2-6, 1-3 Southern Conference) scored their only touchdown of the game in the first quarter, off a 17-yard rush by Colby Alexander. Sam Spence hit a 34-yard field goal in the second quarter.   Xavier Gaillardetz had an 80-yard punt return touchdown less than two minutes into the game, Jake McNamara threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns and East Tennessee State routed VMI 45-10 on Saturday. The Buccaneers (3-4, 1-2 Southern Conference) scored the first 31 points, with Jeremiah Harrison and Ephraim Floyd each catching scores and Devontae Houston scoring on the ground.

Houston led with 76 yards rushing on 12 carries, and Jason Albritton added 56 yards and a rushing score on 10 carries. Khalil Eichelberger had 53 yards on 11 carries. The Bucs ran for 284 yards to VMI's 13, and outgained the Keydets 509-82. Jackson Byrd scored his first career rushing touchdown on a 20-yard dash in the final minute. He also completed his only pass attempt for 13 yards. The Keydets (1-5, 0-2) have lost four straight games, with their lone win coming against Division II Ferrum College. - AP College Football

  WEEK 1 SOCON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Devontae Houston, Gr., RB, ETSU, Roanoke, Ala.,...Houston scored a pair of touchdowns in the Buccaneers' 45-17 victory over Murray State on Saturday. The product of Roanoke, Alabama, rushed for 128 yards on 14 carries, marking the fourth time in his ETSU career that he surpassed 100 yards rushing. The graduate student's first score came in the first quarter from the 1-yard line, and his second was in the third quarter from the 7-yard line. Houston's big game helped ETSU rush for 392 yards, which is the team's highest single-game total since 2021.   Devontae Houston ran for 128 yards and two of East Tennessee State's five rushing touchdowns, leading the Buccaneers to a 45-17 season-opening win over Murray State on Saturday. The Bucs opened the Will Healy era with a dominant offensive display that piled up 572 total yards, with 392 yards on the ground. Healy is ETSU's third coach in the past three seasons. Khalil Eichelberger and Houston scored on short runs and Cade McNamara passed 26 yards to Jeremiah Harrison for another score as the Buccaneers took a 24-3 halftime lead. Murray State scored twice in the third quarter to make it 24-17 but the Bucs responded with touchdowns runs by Houston, Eichelberger and D'Marius Rucker to close it out. McNamara completed 12 of 17 passes for 124 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Murray State's Jim Ogle was 22 of 35 passing for 226 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.   2022 PHIL STEEL ALL-INDEPENDENT CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM: Devontae Houston, Connecticut,...Sophomore Devontae Houston is second on the team in rushing with 538 yards on 79 carries, a team-best 6.8 yards per rush. After missing a pair of games with injury, Houston returned for the UMass game and ripped off a 75-yard touchdown run on his first carry back. It was a career-long run for Houston and the longest play from scrimmage this season for UConn as well as the longest scoring play.   Devontae Houston ran for 135 yards on 12 carries, Victor Rosa scored a pair of touchdowns and UConn thumped Florida International 33-12 on Saturday for the Huskies' second straight win. The Huskies (3-4) hadn't won consecutive contests since the 2017 season when they beat Temple 28-24 on Oct. 14 and Tulsa, 20-14, on Oct. 21. Last week they rallied to beat Fresno State 19-14. On Saturday, they were in control from the start against the Panthers (2-3). Rosa scored on runs of 5 and 4 yards, Noe Ruelas kicked field goals of 26 and 35 yards and UConn led 20-0 at halftime. The Huskies ran for 295 yards on 46 carries and quarterback Zion Turner was an efficient 14-of-19 passing for 102 yards. Grayson James threw for 256 yards for Florida International and was intercepted twice.   Devontae Houston rushed for 105 yards and his 17-yard touchdown run with 2:20 remaining helped UConn beat Fresno State 19-14 on Saturday. Zion Turner passed for 130 yards with one touchdown, and Kevens Clercius had 79 yards receiving for UConn (2-4). Tre Wortham and Ian Swenson each had an interception for the Huskies defense. Wortham returned his pick 24 yards into the red zone, leading to Turner's 5-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Turner. The two-point conversion attempted failed to keep it 14-12 in the third quarter. Logan Fife threw for 157 yards and two interceptions for Fresno State (1-3). The first touchdown of the game came in the second quarter when Nikko Remigio broke six tackles on an 87-yard punt return for Fresno State. - AP College Football
