Jestin Jacobs made his biggest impact as third-year freshman at Iowa in 2021 and his former teammates expect him to get back to that level of impact when he takes the field at Oregon. Jacobs, who had 53 tackles, two pass breakups, an interception and a f orced fumble in 2021, played in just two games last season due to leg injury and had only six tackles with one tackle for loss and a pass breakup. He transferred to Oregon in December. "He's a very talented player and I'm excited what he's going to do wi th his next step here," former Iowa All-American linebacker Jack Campbell said. "I feel like he's a guy who has a lot of different tools that a lot of guys don't have. I feel like he's going to be playing at a high level this season."Jacobs was fi fth in tackles for Iowa in 2021 behind Campbell (143) and Seth Benson (105) at linebacker. He was set to be in a similar role this season before the injury, which occurred in the season opener and got worse after he returned three weeks later. "Our defen se is extremely complex and he was a really smart, instinctive player," former Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta said. "That was a big loss on our defense but he's a great player and great dude too." Entering his fifth-year junior year, Jacobs has two years of eligibility remaining. What Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz feared Saturday night has been confirmed regarding Hawkeyes linebacker Jestin Jacobs, who will miss the rest of the season after an injury suffered in the Rutgers win. "Unfortunately, we did get bad news on Jestin," Ferentz s aid Tuesday. "Didn't sound good the other night, and that's been confirmed. So he's going to have to have surgery and miss the rest of the season. That's obviously a very tough break and tough for the team, but most importantly, just tough on the individ ual. "That's the worst part about injuries." Jacobs didn't return in the second half Saturday in what was his second injury issue of the season. Jacobs was injured in the season opener and returned for sporadic action against Nevada after missing the Iow a State game. Now, his season is over. In Jacobs' absence, expect to see more action from reserve linebackers Logan Klemp and Jay Higgins. "Logan's been in the program. He's been a really good special teams player and a leader," Ferentz said. "He's doing a fine job, and Jay (Higgins) gives us a little flexibility as well." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Iowa's defense won't be getting any reinforcements back this week. Linebacker Jestin Jacobs (leg; soft tissue) isn't ready according to coach Nick Ferentz. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz shared Tuesday that versatile linebacker Jestin Jacobs won't play this week after suffering a leg injury vs. South Dakota State. While linebacker is a deep position for the Hawkeyes, that's a major blow to take a future NFL draft pick off their defense. Iowa will likely play a lot of 4-2-5 defense against the Cyclones — putting Cooper DeJean at cash and Terry Roberts and Riley Moss at corners - while dispatching Campbell and Seth Benson as the linebackers. Iowa is "doubtful," p er Ferentz, to get cornerback Jermari Harris back from injury this week.Also out for a few weeks is backup defensive tackle Yahya Black, who suffered a foot injury in the opener. That's a big depth blow, because Noah Shannon and Logan Lee (as dyna mic as they were Saturday) cannot take every snap as undersized defensive tackles. Ferentz did say this will escalate true freshman Aaron Graves into the plans, along with walk-on Louie Stec. Surprisingly, Graves did not play in the opener despite a stel lar fall camp. Perhaps Iowa will slide Lukas Van Ness inside for some snaps to shore things up at tackle. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Iowa fans remember linebacker Jestin Jacobs from his recruitment in 2019. Then, the four-star Army All-American spurned in-state power Ohio State in favor of the Hawkeyes. Since then, he's grown in more ways than one. He's physically bigger, but he's gr own from a fan favorite to a team favorite among coaches and players. This year, the redshirt sophomore is set to break out on the field with big expectations. He's one of the three starting linebackers alongside Seth Benson and Jack Campbell, and he's w orking at the linebacker/safety hybrid "cash" position with Dane Belton. Wherever he lines up this fall, he'll be a welcomed weapon in Phil Parker's defense. "He's got great football instinct, great eyes and great feet," veteran defensive back Riley Moss said. "He's just a big dude. His arms are long. He takes up a lot of space, which helps us out in the back end, if they're running crossers and meshes; he can sit underneath those.
