Over March and April, it left Knowles with a glimpse of the potential of Proctor, who enters his fifth season with the Buckeyes on the cusp of his biggest role. "He's a guy that can really change the game," Knowles said. "He's what we want at safety." Proctor, who was a part-time starter at free safety in 2020 before being sidelined for most of last season, is likely to be at another spot in the secondary. That's at the boundary safety position known as the "bandit," while Ronnie Hickman steps into the free safety spot as the "adjustor." Tanner McCalister, who followed Knowles in transferring from Oklahoma State, is the favorite to step in as the slot safety, forming the potential trio of starting safeties.

The role for Hickman comes with a lot of responsibilities. Positioned in the middle of the field, he'll cover a lot of safety. And as the nickname suggest, he'll make his share of adjustments to the defense before the snap based on looks from the offense. Hickman said he is prepared for it after lining up in a safety-linebacker hybrid role a year ago. "It's just going out there and being the best teammate I can be for my brothers," Hickman said. "Just like they would do the same. I'm going to do that for them. So I don't really see it as a burden or something I got to carry or something like that. It's going out there and being a teammate with my guys." The three safeties are all veterans with Hickman preparing for his fourth season, and Proctor and McCalister in their fifth seasons. - Columbus Dispatch

Ryan Day expects more than improvement from Ohio State football's defense this season - and he name-dropped one of the best squads in program history to emphasize his point. Day set the goal of a Top 10 defense Wednesday at Big Ten Media Days. He doubled down on that standard later, and reiterated that it starts up front with stopping the run - the Achilles heel that ruined the Buckeyes' playoff bid last season. "A lot of it has to do with technique, a lot of it has to do with scheme, and a lot of it has to do with toughness," Day said. Day compared the current defense to the one that led OSU to a playoff berth in 2019.

That team also installed a new defense under a new coordinator. It benefited from players who gained experience the year before as young players forced into bigger roles. Chase Young and Jeff Okudah headlined a defense that led the nation in yards allowed per play and ranked fourth in points allowed per game. Those players, though, were third-year stars on the verge of being the No. 2 and 3 picks in the NFL Draft. The 2022 Ohio State defense will rely more on second-year players who may be further removed from their ceilings. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

2022 PRESEASON JIM THORPE AWARD WATCHLIST: Ronnie Hickman, Ohio State, Jr.,...According to Ohio State online media, safety Rocket Ronnie Hickman (6-1, 205) is a senior academically, is in his fourth year with the program and has three seasons of eligibility. You see, he redshirted in 2019 as a true freshman while rehabbing a shoulder that he hurt in his senior year of high school. He then played in the first five games in 2020 as a special teams hellion before getting hurt again. Avoiding the confusing math, Draft Scout just lists him as a junior. Thus far, he has played in 18 games and started 13 times, with all of his starts coming in 2021 and was one of, if not the, top defensive players on the team in 2021 and was named second-team all-Big Ten by the coaches and third-team by the media. He led the team in tackles with 100, including 54 solo stops, and in interceptions with two. Is the first Buckeye in six years with 100 or more tackles in a season (Raekwon McMillan, 102 in 2015). - Ohio State Football

Ohio State football's contingent at Big Ten Media Days in Indianapolis next week will put its record-setting offensive stars front and center. Quarterback C.J. Stroud, receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and safety Ronnie Hickman will represent the Buckeyes at the annual event, held July 26-27. Ohio State coach Ryan Day and players are scheduled to take the podium on the second day. Stroud is the reigning Big Ten offensive player of the year after throwing for 4,435 yards and 44 touchdowns last season. Smith-Njigba is the league's leading returning receiver after totaling 1,606 yards and nine touchdowns on 95 receptions. Hickman led OSU tackles with 100 to go along with two interceptions, a sack and a forced fumble. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ronnie Hickman made the most of his first starting role, rarely leaving the field and establishing himself as arguably Ohio State football's most consistent defender. The safety said Thursday he plans to resume that role in 2022. While he is a third-year sophomore eligible for the NFL Draft, Hickman said he plans to return to Ohio State for another season. Other Buckeyes said they have not made their NFL Draft decisions, including defensive end Zach Harrison, offensive lineman Dawand Jones and cornerback Cameron Brown. But all said they plan to play in the Rose Bowl against Utah on Jan. 1 regardless. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
