Former Alabama offensive lineman Evan Neal chose not to participate in workout drills this week at the NFL combine, and with eight weeks before the draft, there is little left for the three-year starter to prove. Neal has long been considered a high firs t-round pick and could become Alabama's first No. 1 overall selection in 74 years. "We've had a whole lot of Alabama players that were worthy of having the No. 1 spot," Neal said Thursday. "If that would be me, that would be extremely special. The whole state of Alabama would be proud and the University of Alabama would definitely be proud, for sure." No Alabama player has been the first chosen in an NFL draft since Washington took quarterback Harry Gilmer in 1948.The New York Jets also made Joe Namath the No. 1 overall pick in the 1965 AFL draft before that league merged its draft with the NFL. Neal will still have a chance to step on the field in front of scouts at Alabama's pro day March 30, in addition to meeting with teams in the weeks lead ing up to the April 28 draft in Las Vegas. "Had a long season," Neal said of his decision to skip combine drills. "I wanted to give myself a little bit more time to prepare. After talking with my agent, he thought that would be the best route to take for me." - Birmingham News

Alabama's top prospect for the 2022 NFL draft is a little lighter these days. Offensive lineman Evan Neal, who played last season as a sophomore at 360 pounds, is down to about 345 this season, he revealed Monday. "I'm definitely a lot more light on my f eet, light on my toes and I like this weight that I'm at right now," he said. Neal's 6-foot-7 frame has helped propel him to being discussed as a potential top 10 pick in next spring's NFL draft. After starting at guard as a freshman and right tackle in 2020, Neal has transitioned to left tackle this year and is in prime position to become the Tide's fourth consecutive offensive lineman taken in the first round.Jonah Williams (No. 11 in 2019), Jedrick Wills (No. 10 in 2020) and Alex Leatherwood ( No. 17 in 2021) have combined for over $51 million guaranteed as part of their rookie contracts. For Neal, losing a few pounds could mean earning a few more dollars at the next level. "He spent a lot of time getting his body right, because he used to be even bigger than he is now," coach Nick Saban said Sunday. "But now he can sustain better." Even at 360 pounds, Neal's athleticism opened eyes last summer when a brief video of him box jumping went viral. That happened in June when Neal showed off his 48 -inch jump. "When you coach in the NFL, you see guys like that on occasion and we had a few through the years," Saban said. "But Evan is very unique in terms of he has great size, he's got great athleticism." - Birmingham News

Evan Neal's gone viral a few times now with his offseason training videos. At 6-foot-7, 350ish pounds, the Alabama offensive tackle's athleticism to size ratio is, well, notable. Last August, a 2-second video from Crimson Tide director of sports science Matt Rhea showed Neal doing a box jump inside the football complex. This summer, he posted a video on his social media doing a similar jump but with pads clearly taller than last year's. That clip has been viewed north of 593,000 times as of Aug. 9 as th e legend of Neal's sheer athleticism grows. The box jumps were new to Neal last year when Rhea and David Ballou took over the strength and conditioning program. The lineman on Monday said he hit 36 inches last summer. That number is up to 48 inches in 20 21. "Shoot," Neal said, "I really have no one to thank but my parents for my genetics on that one. But I'm just thankful we have great strength coaches to help us." - Birmingham News

Alabama had five unanimous first-team All-Americans last season, but all will be playing in the NFL this fall. Who might be next? The first look at how Alabama players are viewed nationally entering the 2021 season came Thursday when the Walter Camp Foot ball Foundation released its preseason All-America lists. Junior left tackle Evan Neal and sophomore outside linebacker Will Anderson were both preseason first-team All-Americans, while senior cornerback Josh Jobe was on the second team. Alabama's three selections matched Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and LSU but fell short of Clemson, Iowa State and Georgia's four picks each to the preseason list. - Birmingham News

Much like college football's seemingly-endless recruiting cycle, the page has quickly turned in the NFL from the 2021 draft to the top prospects for the 2022 draft. Not surprisingly, Alabama has a number of players perceived as potential first-round pick s, with none ranked higher than offensive tackle Evan Neal. The 6-foot-7, 360-pound Neal was a five-star recruit who started immediately as a guard in 2019 before transitioning to right tackle in 2020. He is expected to start for a third consecutive seas on as a junior this fall at left tackle, which could serve as a springboard for him being an early first-round pick during next April's draft in Las Vegas. Neal has size that NFL teams covet at the position and will likely begin this season with all-conf erence recognition. Alabama appears prepared for the likelihood that Neal will declare early for the NFL draft after this season. The Tide boasts a pair of incoming five-star freshmen at offensive tackle, Tommy Brockermeyer and JC Latham. - Birmingham Ne ws
