After an excellent career at Stanford, Houston Heimuli said he got to thinking about about how his time in college football was coming to an end. "I'm a BYU boy at heart," Heimuli said on Wednesday. "Any chance I had, I came back here. In my head, I knew that if I wanted to keep playing college football, I wanted to come to BYU. I was not going to go anywhere else. I just waited for my avenue to open. (Cougar head coach Kalani Sitake) said, 'hey, we want to have you here.' I took my chance to be here." Heimuli grinned as he talked about being at BYU, since it is a legacy experience for him."This is home," Heimuli said. "I grew up on BYU football since I was a kid. I first discovered football with my dad (former Cougar star running back Lakei Hei muli). He had his old highlights and as a kid, I was like, oh my gosh this is so cool. The one I always had was the 1984 season (when BYU won the national championship). It was a huge compilation and I still have that thing memorized." His familiarity wi th what the Cougar program was all about has made his transition pretty straightforward, Houston Heimuli said. "It wasn't much of a shake-up," Houston Heimuli said. "We do things differently compared to other schools. I still kept up with BYU when I was at Stanford." With just one season to play, Houston Heimuli wants to make the most of his opportunities and his certainly focused almost completely on the opener against South Florida. - Daily Herald

The 2021 Stanford Football captains were announced by Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football David Shaw on Thursday evening inside Luck Auditorium. The Cardinal captains are annually voted upon by the student-athletes on the roster. Representing Stanfo rd as captains this season will be: returning captain Thomas Booker, alongside newly appointed captains Jordan Fox, Houston Heimuli and Michael Wilson. Heimuli is a fifth-year from Woods Cross, Utah who is studying human biology. A dynamic fullback, Heim uli was named All-Pac-12 honorable mention in 2020. He was integral in the improved Cardinal running game, as Stanford tallied 15 rushing touchdowns in just six games. - Stanford Football

Because fullbacks don't often touch the ball, misconceptions about the position are easy to develop. But, Heimuli contends, that doesn't mean the position itself is easy. He likened playing fullback to a "physics game." "We're not the biggest, and we're not the fastest or the strongest necessarily, so we rely a lot on leverage," he said. "We literally play physics against these defensive guys where our whole goal is just to get low and bend over and see if we can outmaneuver people. It's a bruising posi tion where it's a lot of hard hitting, a lot of contact - but we do have a reason for some of the things we do on the field." For that reason, the "shelf life" of fullbacks in the NFL is similar to that of running backs. The average length of a professio nal career for running backs is just under three years, and it is rare to see many continuing to play into their thirties. Heimuli's dream is to play professionally, but he also understands that an NFL career would likely be short and has a backup plan i n place. As a human biology major, one of his long-term goals is to attend medical school and ultimately work as a pediatrician. - The Stanford Daily
