Former Air Force quarterback Donald Hammond III flew to Green Bay on Sunday and will try out with the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday, a source told The Gazette. Hammond, who did not sign with a team after going undrafted last month, had drawn at least nich e interest prior to the draft from experts who liked the arm strength and abilities possessed by the 6-foot-1, 228-pound Georgia native. At Air Force, Hammond set a program record in passing efficiency (164.09) and average yards per completion (20.6). He led the team to a 11-2 record and No. 21 national ranking in his lone season as full-time starter. An academic violation prior to his senior year led to a drop in cadet status and caused Hammond to miss the season. Quarterback Donald Hammond III is no longer at the Air Force Academy and hopes to take his next snaps in the NFL. Hammond, a standout for the Falcons as a sophomore and junior during the 2018-19 seasons, provided the updates on Twitter on Monday. The ann ouncement followed a turbulent time for Hammond. In late July, the academy responded to an inquiry from The Gazette to say that Hammond was no longer a cadet in good standing. The drop in standing kept him from playing during his senior season, which was truncated to six games instead of 12 because of COVID-19. Air Force quarterback Donald Hammond III is in the NCAA transfer portal, but that doesn't mean his fate is sealed at the academy. Hammond, expected to be among the top players in the Mountain West this season, lost his eligibility when he lost his good s tanding as a cadet during this past offseason. The move to enter the portal - first reported by Rivals.com - is an attempt to keep options open as his situation continues to develop. The portal was designed by the NCAA to bring transparency to the transf er process and empower student-athletes considering a move, but it does not mean a player must leave. Air Force basketball player A.J. Walker, for example, entered the portal this past spring but opted to stay. "I put my name in the transfer portal, and I'll see where everything goes from here," Hammond wrote on Twitter.There would be hurdles to clear for Hammond to play elsewhere. Cadets become locked into a military commitment after beginning their junior year. They cannot voluntarily leave aft er that point, and those removed from the academy for violations as juniors and seniors are still expected to complete the military commitment as enlisted airmen and could be required to pay the cost of their education. Hammond took over as the starting quarterback for Air Force midway through his sophomore year. As a junior he led the team to a 12-1 record and a No. 21 final ranking by the Associated Press. 2020 PRESEASON DAVEY O'BRIEN AWARD WATCH LIST: Donald Hammond III, Air Force...Hammond started 11 of 13 games last season and was named second-team all-Colorado by the National Football Foundation. He finished fourth on the team in rushing with 553 yards and a team-best 13 touchdowns. Hammond hit 56-111 passes for 1,316 yards and 13 touchdowns which fifth in school history for a single season. Air Force could be without its star quarterback if it plays the 2020 football season. "Donald Hammond is no longer a cadet in good standing and cannot represent the academy in outside activities," Air Force said in a statement to The Gazette. No informat ion was provided Saturday for the violation that led to Hammond's drop in status. Other athletes who have dropped in status have missed at least a season's worth of competition. Air Force's Donald Hammond III was among 30 quarterbacks named to the Davey O'Brien Award watch list Tuesday. The O'Brien Award is given annually to the nation's best college football quarterback. Hammond threw for 1,316 yards and 13 touchdowns last seas on while rushing for 553 yards and three scores. He averaged 151 passing yards with two touchdowns over Air Force's final four games despite attempting fewer than 10 throws per game. Donald Hammond III ran for a touchdown and threw for three more, including a go-ahead 50-yard pass to Geraud Sanders early in the fourth quarter as Air Force shook off an early two-touchdown deficit to beat Colorado State 38-21 on Saturday night. Sanders came open on a short crossing route and Hammond hit him in stride, allowing the receiver to break up field along the left sideline and then cut back all the way across the field, outrunning his pursuers to the goal line. The score was part of a string o f 24 straight points for Air Force (8-2, 5-1 Mountain West), which won its fifth straight. It's the longest winning streak for the Falcons since closing the 2016 season with six consecutive victories.Hammond added a 28-yard touchdown pass to Benja min Waters later in the fourth quarter after earlier hitting him with a 31-yard score. Patrick O'Brien threw for two touchdowns, including a 17-yard score to Dante Wright with 6:36 remaining that pulled the Rams (4-6, 3-3) within three points. But the Fa lcons responded by grinding out another scoring drive that Hammond capped with a 1-yard run with 2:32 left to play. Air Force was in no rush to pass. So the Falcons just rushed their way to a runaway win. Donald Hammond III scored three of Air Force's seven rushing touchdowns and the Falcons ran their record to 24-0 against teams from the Football Championship Subdivi sion by beating Colgate 48-7 on Saturday. Kadin Remsberg added two scores for Air Force, which moved to 13-0 in season openers under coach Troy Calhoun. The Falcons didn't throw a pass until the third quarter - their only attempt of the game. There was n o need to air it out as they amassed 423 yards on the ground. Fullback Taven Birdow gained 80 yards to lead a balanced rushing attack."We were more physical than them. They weren't ready for us to be physical with them," Hammond said. "They were p laying kind of soft so we shoved it down their throat." With lightning in the area at halftime, the crowd was encouraged to head to their cars and wait out the approximately 30-minute delay. Many didn't return with the score already 35-0. Air Force's def ense did its part with an interception, fumble recovery, two sacks and a fourth-down stop. It all added up to a long afternoon for Colgate (0-2), the preseason pick to win the Patriot League.
